About

Othello and Oliver, on the move!
Othello and Oliver, on the move!

A long time ago in a galaxy... Alright so our story isn't nearly that epic, but it's pretty close!

Where to start, the thing is that I don't know.  I'm going to try and tell you about this story in a way that makes sense, but in the end I'm so Nerd Super Rabid Excited about this that I may lose you somewhere, so please stay with me.

This story is about humanity, it's about love, it's about friendship, sacrifice, honor, humility, pain, joy, and mostly about a mouse.  His name is Othello, and he is the epitome of what I think it is to be human.  He isn't perfect and he won't always make the right choices, but he has a big heart and a quick mind.  His trusty steed however isn't all that bright, but he makes up for that with un-questionable loyalty and love.  This adventure will follow the two of them as they try and find their way in the world, whether that be as the galaxies best bounty hunters, or as something a little lower on the totem pole.  I wanted to tell this story because I believe in it.  I know that bounty hunters and space aren't necessarily the most original ideas nor are they "real world" situations, but in the end, to tell a good story, do they really need to be?  From Earth to Mars, we will follow these two as they hunt down bad guys.  And we'll watch as they grow, finding out that the world isn't necessarily as black and white as they would like to think.  Decisions will need to be made, and sometimes there won't be a right answer.  What will the impact be on them? At what point does your moral compass shift from one direction to the other? And when a bad call is made, how will he deal with it?

Othello, serious face.
Othello, serious face.

I would like to think that this little mouse will be all that is good in us, that he will exemplify the human condition.  But, that would be foolish, since we as humans are a little flawed.  In the end he will be as good as he, or I guess I, will allow him to be.  And don't worry, there is a "bad guy" lurking in the background, moving pawns around and creating chaos.  But, I'm not quite ready to share that part with you!

So, that's a little about the story, I guess now I'll tell you a little about me.  I have been drawing since I can remember.  For the longest time it was only soldiers, and then Spider-Man.  Then came a short stint at art school, and then a long stint of working in food service and retail.  I was always drawing during those times, but I never thought I would be able to do art as a profession.  And then at some point I realized that what I really wanted to do was draw mice in human situations.  There is something that makes even the bad situations good when looking at them, they're cute creatures but they still have the ability to give almost human expressions. But, I still couldn't figure out quite what I wanted to do with them.

Enter C2E2, the comic and entertainment convention here in Chicago.  It was the first convention that I had attended as part of the artist's alley, and needless to say I was a little apprehensive.  I had never sold a piece of art nor had I thought anyone would want to buy something that I created.  And on that first Friday that was the case.  No one, literally no one even looked at anything that I had brought! And I had stayed up for almost two days trying to get some comic panels done.  This was, to say the least, discouraging and disheartening. At the end of the day I was ready to say "screw it" and just not attend the next two days.  Thankfully my girlfriend convinced me to quit being a baby, get some sleep, and get back in the next day.  So there I am, grumpy, still a little tired, and sitting in an uncomfortable chair watching all of the convention attendees pass me by.  At this point my friend looks at me and says "what do you want to draw?".  And that was it, I didn't want to draw Spider-Man, I still like drawing soldiers but that wasn't bringing any joy into my life, no in the end I wanted to draw mice.

So that's what I did, and that's what ended up selling... A lot. It was a sense of validation and a sense of finally finding myself.  So here I am, trying to take these little guys and throw them into the big world.

This Kickstarter would not only fund the comic's ability to be published and created, it would help fund (wait for it) my dreams.  The money that you donate will help me to create this story by paying for the publishing fees as well as the other fun stuff that comes with creating a comic.  Since this adventure will be finished in full color, using watercolors and various inks, which adds to the printing prices as well as the cost to finish the issues. Other things like screen printing inks for tshirts, sticker paper... for stickers, patches, and of course printing fees. I plan on having the issues released monthly with the seperate comics being collected into a hardcover graphic novel at the end. With your help, support, and faith I will be able to show the world Othello and Oliver.

Othello and Oliver, until the end.
Othello and Oliver, until the end.

My Uncle and I had a conversation once, I was freaking out because I wasn't entirely sure as to what I wanted to do with my life, and he was the one that I had thought would have the best advice for me.  He told me " Drew, we don't care what you do, you could be a toilet scrubber at McDonalds and we would be proud of you.  Just do what makes you happy, and make sure that you do it the best that you possibly can.  We'll always be here, and we'll always support you."

This makes me happy, and I plan on doing my best, I hope you'll come on this wild ride with us.

*Update 7/2/13*

A Kind Kickstarter viewer informed me that it might be good to have some kind of images that show the actual comic.  Well, I'm a little superstitious about showing things that have not been 100% completed.  So, I compromised, here are some of the thumbnails that I use to create the final images, they are quick and dirty but I hope they show you a little bit of the comic and peak your interest!

Risks and challenges

The first issue of the comic will be complete and ready to go to the printer by the time this Kickstarter is successfully backed. All issues will be shipped as soon as they are received. With any comic, printing problems may occur, but we plan on working extremely closely with our printer to make sure we have the best quality and that it is delivered on time.
