Update: We hit our goal! Amazing! Because we have a few days left, I'm adding a stretch goal of $20,000! Our initial goal doesn't cover the overhead of making this record, but $20,000 gets us a lot closer! Thank you so much for your support and excitement about my debut record :) Ahhh so excited to share it with you!
Technically, this album isn’t my first. While most 7-year olds spend their free time learning to ride a bike without training wheels, I spent time laying recording songs in my aunt and uncle’s home studio. The songs I recorded were the “top 40” of the Lullaby genre—Twinkle Twinkle, Roo-Ra-Loo-Ra-Loo-Ra, Mockingbird—and the record was played to premature babies in NICUs all over the country! With the exception of obstacles one would expect when recording with a seven year old (I may have had a tantrum or two) the recording process went smoothly. The experience gave me a taste of musician life, one that I’ve craved ever since.
Two years ago, I finished writing what would become the first songs on my debut(ish) album! I had just moved Los Angeles after living in Ann Arbor, Michigan where I was primarily working as a saxophonist in horn sections, a balkan brass bands, jam bands, jazz groups, etc. I wanted to transition to working and creating more as a singer/songwriter and supporting other songwriters, so I felt compelled to write an original, full length album. My brother Ari passed away early in 2016 and there were days I was overcome with grief. But songwriting proved healing, and throwing myself into the album process was so inspiring, energizing, and moving at a particularly broken time in my life. At times, the past two years have felt long and treacherous (days filled with editing and comping), full of obstacles and bumps (scheduling and finances) but I put my heart, soul (and bank account!) into everything I did. The release day is finally in sight!
Recording an album is really expensive, and I'd love to invite you to support it! On this Kickstarter, you can buy the digital album, physical CD, tote bag, VIP tickets to my album release shows, music lessons—you can even purchase a private house concert! In Kickstarter you either have to make the whole goal or none of the goal, so every bit make a difference towards my goal of raising $15,000!
After demoing the album in my aunt and uncle's Livonia basement with my roommates Julian Allen and James Cornelison; going into the studio to record the rhythm section and skeleton tracks with ALL the heavy hitters I know (dream team personal below) ; and exploring the countless hours in the vast forests of music production and overdub land with my album producer and close friend Tyler Duncan...
Finally we are here! It's August 2018 in Los Angeles and we're almost done! In this moment, we are deep in mixing and mastering land. Tyler Duncan (producer), Jake Birch (mix engineer), and myself are finishing up the last steps of this album to share with you very soon. But this month during the Kickstarter pre-sale you can expect to see and hear a ton of cool output: SINGLES, OFFICIAL MUSIC VIDEOS, UNOFFICIAL VIDEOS, PHOTOS, and ....ALBUM RELEASE TOUR ANNOUNCEMENT!!! Can you stand the excitement? I know I can't.
I'm so proud about how this album turned out!! It's truly the best thing I've ever done, the hardest I've ever worked, and I can't wait to share the final product in....

Special thanks are in order! To my aunt and uncle, Larry and Marianne Talon for letting us use their Livonia basement to demo the album; Lauren Iverson for doing an amazing job producing this Kickstarter video; Gail Solway and Chris Mile for letting me live at their house when I was recording in Ann Arbor; Katie Hacala for being an amazing friend and helping me with the Kickstarter process and many other album organizational things; Meredith Murphy for being so supportive and the best stylist; Ariana Weckstein for being a creative collaborator and pushing my songwriting; my aunt and uncle, Susan Mazer and Dallas Smith for giving me my first gigs and experience in the recording studio EVER; my parents Susan Talon and Marc Mazer for being so supportive, collaborative, and excited; and lastly, my brother Ari who did the initial financing of this album with the money he left me after he died. Ari, I forever love, hold, and miss you. Many of these songs are for and about you, and you'll continue to influence me as a person, musician, and art maker: always.
Risks and challenges
Making a record is VERY EXPENSIVE. And for good reason! There's so much that goes into this process: renting recording studio time; hiring a sound engineer, mix engineer, mastering engineer, music producer, album art, AND of course all the studio musicians. 15 Gs might seem steep now, but that doesn't even cover the overhead... Like I said before, I LOVE how this record turned out, so you can expect to be EXCITED and MOVED when you press play in your car on the way to work, run on your treadmill, or chop your vegetables. That is to say, you won't be disappointed if you purchase my record! Or any of these other rewards!
Can't wait to interface with you on your stereo or headphones or at a live show! I can't thank you enough for your support!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
