About

10,000 Hours takes its name from Malcolm Gladwell's principle that it takes 10,000 hours of practice to become an expert in any given field.  Seeing a dearth of successful women in comedy, we plan to give them every opportunity to get those hours in.

We are a Non-Profit Women’s Comedic Arts Center that strives to provide a safe space artistically, physically, and personally for women to find and express their diverse and unique comedic voices.

Although all genders are welcome, the primary educational and performance emphases will exist for the benefit of women, whose voices are still underrepresented and who are -- let's face it -- just not as respected in the field of comedy as men.

Yes, female comedians have lately established a larger presence in the field than ever before, but we still believe that we can go further in expanding opportunities for women in comedy performance and production both in Los Angeles and across the country.

10,000 Hours will bring together female comedians on both the amateur and professional levels to moderate and take part in panels, workshops, and performances, as well as the creation of new, female-driven works.

Services to the community include rehearsal and performance space, classes taught by female instructors focusing on such subjects as writing for females and developing varied and diverse female characters, film kits for women to be able to produce their own high-quality content, green screen studio, recording booth, reference library of books, albums, film and tv made by women, and special events such as free lectures by successful women in the business and arts and humanities events celebrating our history, present, and future.

We hope to see more women gain successful employment in the field of comedy, especially in a city where nearly 20% of its population is employed in the entertainment industry.

In order to make this center a success, we want to be able to bring the most respected names in our community and the entertainment industry together to inspire and advise those on the way up, and we want the center to be a well taken care of space that comedians can feel proud to be a part of, but as a non-profit center with limited funding, we can only bring this dream to life with your help!

10,000 Hours has the power to impact so many women, not just comedians, in a life-changing way, and we’re hoping we can inspire all women with a story to tell to go out there and be heard!

Risks and challenges

THE PATRIARCHY.

Kidding.

Seriously though, we are a start-up. With any new organization, there are bound to be some stumbles and setbacks. We have been lucky enough to put together a board of women with many years of experience in both the comedy world and the non-profit sector, and we are confident that they have the knowledge, drive, and dedication to this project to see it become a successful tentpole of the community. Initial reaction to this project has been overwhelmingly positive from people of all genders, who are all equally enthusiastic to take part in something that can truly bring a community together.
