About this project
Are you a true retro gamer? Have you ever wanted to create or get your name on a bona fide retro game, but wouldn't know where to start? Well now you can more easily than you ever imagined.
Turnarcades and Revival Retro Events are proud to present...
What is Revival Survival?
Revival Survival is an all-new retro arcade project that embodies all the faces and features of an RRE event, in a dedicated custom game and arcade machine that will feature at all future events. What makes this machine so unique is that both the cabinet and the game are being entirely custom-made from scratch, and in gaming community spirit can literally star YOU!
What does the game and project involve?
The game itself has already been partially developed with a proper 80's arcade graphics and gameplay style. It's a challenging maze game with a battle element, or if you prefer, Pac-Man-meets-Gauntlet. You play as RRE/Turnarcades' Craig, who is running around a retro event trying to collect as many retro games and items as possible for the next show but is being held up by hordes of escaped rogue game enemies, show-goers and obstacles. Armed with his trusty light gun, you must battle through up to ten stages set around the show, battling the bad guys and saving the show!
The game itself will be integrated into a dedicated, custom arcade cabinet that will appear at all future RRE events, starting with it's launch at Revival 2014. The cabinet will be a complete one-off, and will serve as a permanent competition machine. Every show, the top 5 or ten high scores recorded will receive FREE tickets to the next RRE event. From a backer's point of view, this means your placement in the game will always be seen by hundreds (even thousands) of people at every event, making your face or even your company's advert get full exposure and recognition every time the cabinet is displayed, photographed or filmed!
How can I get involved in this project and what are the incentives?
Many retro gamers over the years have wished they could be part of the retro gaming world or even develop their own game, but don't have the connections or skills needed to really make a mark on the hobby. This project has been created to not only fit in with RRE's ethic of bringing new elements to the world of retro-gaming, but to really involve the retro community, our supporters and regular show-goers permanently and immortalise the real people and Revival experience in the most fitting and permanent way possible. Absolutely anyone can be a part of this game for just a few pounds, and make their own truly unique mark on retro-gaming!
All of the perks are aimed at giving as many individuals and traders a chance to actually be a part of this project, and actually form the very basis of the project that is being created. They include everything from simply getting your name in the credits, to full business advertising placements or becoming a character or direct part of the gameplay itself!
What is the deadline and how will the project be presented on completion?
The game itself is already half completed and at a very playable state. It is just waiting for graphical revision, music, final gameplay additions and tweaks and of course, the very basis of the game, the characters, adverts and perks to be implemented, which will take the longest time. Once the game is complete, the cabinet and artwork will be designed and built based on the final look of the game. If the pledges reaches a significant enough amount, noted chiptune musicians and graphic artists may be approached to enhance the soundtrack and create even better cabinet artwork.
The game itself will be tested within the cabinet for optimal balance and to keep high score potential close, then the completed machine will be officially unveiled at our next flagship event, Revival 2014 on 9-10 August 2014 at Wolverhampton Racecourse. Everyone will be able to see the machine and play the game in it's entirity over the event weekend.
A beta version of the game as it currently stands was playable at Revival Mini 2013 on 7-8 December 2013, to test bugs and get feedback on it early on before the Kickstarter is complete. Early responses were positive and some of the already implemented characters really lit up the faces of those who backed early!
Risks and challenges
The challenge will be to implement all the character additions, gameplay tweaks and credits prior to the event in August, as well as to ensure the cabinet is fully constructed and ready to play there. It is very doubtful these will be problematic as Turnarcades are expert arcade cabinet builders with plenty of experience, and the game itself has already been created and tested to a playable state at this point, so there is little doubt the machine will be ready and playable in time for the event whatever happens. If we raise enough in pledges, it is hoped that noted retro artists or musicians may be commissioned to enhance the cabinet look and gaming score, but the challenge will be if we can raise enough.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
