Paul Bennett's art has an airy, ethereal quality about it that unassumingly invites your imagination on a play date. The character of his art is much like that of his own personality--a little introverted but with a desire to encourage people. Gentle mostly, hopeful maybe, and vulnerable occasionally.
His favorite medium? Anything and everything he says. Walls, paper bags, cardboard, Photoshop--whatever. And the inspiration for it comes from everywhere, but mostly from outside of himself, like a detox from heaven.
That kind of inspiration speaks to him, and to others as well. His work evokes the kind of reaction that comes from something arriving unexpectedly on the scene from somewhere pure and good.
"My work is to me like a sand mandala is to a Buddhist," Bennett says. "It's meditative, but once it's out, I don't mind throwing it away."
You can see some of Paul's work on the walls of Larry's Music Center in Wooster, Ohio where he has created colorful murals that serve as backdrops for a variety of instruments and equipment.
I'm very honored that Paul has agreed to illustrate the short story "Undercurrent." I've already started to imagine what the illustration might look like, and I can hardly wait to see what he creates. My hope is that we can raise enough to bring color to the illustrations, but, regardless, Paul's wonderful work will most assuredly shine.
"Paul Bennett is a graphic designer and illustrator whose unique drawing style and affinity for Micron Pens has its roots on Carson Street on the South Side of Pittsburgh. It was there that Paul discovered the renewable resource of bent card-stock in a dumpster behind the Utrecht's Art Supply and began to spend hours each day sitting curbside, drawing whatever came to him.
"It wasn't long before passersby were expressing a lot of interest and offering cash for his chopped up pieces of illustrated card-stock. This helped take the edge off of a down time for Paul and he continues to feel blessed. He hopes to bless others, too, by the humble gift of creativity that he's been given."
Those pledging at the $50 or $75 levels will receive a print reproduction of their choice of one of the eight illustrations in the book custom-created by Paul and other imaginative artists. Backers at the $100 level will receive their choice of one of the original pieces (in order of date pledged).
Thank you for your amazing outpouring of support and encouragement. The reality of it all gets closer every day!
