What in the world is the BAAAHS project…
The Big-Ass Amazingly Awesome Homosexual Sheep project known as BAAAHS will be part mutant vehicle, part penetrable sculpture, part socio-political statement, and part gay disco.
From head to tail the art car will be 40-feet long and two levels. He will be a cuddly sheep on the outside with a chill den on the inside. The only entrance will be through his rear end.
His party side (the port or driver side) will contain a large sound system and a DJ platform, hidden by his fluffy exterior. His business side (the starboard or passenger side) houses generators, ventilation, passage between levels, and the exit. From all directions, he looks like a big adorable huggable sheep roaming the pastures of the Playa.
Debuting at Burningman 2013, we think it will be the largest ‘out’ and ‘gay’ art car ever brought to Burningman. While queer and gay burners contribute to large projects all over the Playa, we don’t know of another queer mutant vehicle project of this size and scale.
Can you really put a price on GAYMAZING???
Our mission to GAYMAZE anyone who crosses our path is something you can help us with. Donations made via Kickstarter will go toward amping up the sound system, sourcing the custom slide getting folks into the interior of the sheep, materials for the mirror ball sheep heart, and additional funds will go towards fuel and rent for our space at NIMBY in West Oakland—birthplace of some for the most infamous and celebrated mutant vehicles and art projects.
While a majority of the project is being privately funded by the Shepherds, we need to raise at least $10,000 from the community to realize our homovision in full Technicolor.
If through your generous donation we are able to make our minimum goal, we won't stop there. Every dollar that gets donated goes back into BAAAHS to make him that much more gay-mazing.
If we reach:
$13,000- Double the sound system.
$16,000- Bigger lighting, bigger show, LAZERS out of the eyes!
$20,000- Secret finish to the head, that will blow your mind!
Please help us make this dream of a homosexual sheep a bright, shiny, and colorful reality.
This project isn’t just for Burners…
The experience we are creating will be all-inclusive, providing a roving beacon of hope for homos, their admirers, and anyone else looking for a penetrable experience that will bathe them in amazing music, state-of-the-art lighting, and the furry futuristic wool of a 40’ long sheep whose only entrance is in the rear.
Although BAAAHS will be debuting at Burningman, we see this project having a life off Playa providing sound for queer events, and non-burner events, such as Folsom Street, Pride, Pink Saturday, and Bring Your Own Queer. In addition we’d happily support regional burner events, such as SF’s annual Decompression.
One of the main components behind BAAAHS, on and off Playa, is that in addition to providing sound for our own talent, BAAAHS will be outfitted as an auxiliary sound system, allowing us to literally plug-into and connect with events throughout the year and camps all over Black Rock City, amping up their sound systems as our gift to them and their party goers. And while sounds and providing a stage for queer artists is a big part of our overall mission, another big part of BAAAHS on Playa is to provide the queer community a shuttle out of the gayborhood and a reason to explore areas of the Playa they would otherwise not visit.
You may be wondering, since BAAAHS is not built yet, how this is all going to come together…
-We are completely obscuring the base vehicle (which is a 30’ school bus), with the exception of part of the windshield, inside the form of an adorable and fluffy sheep.
-A ladder is affixed to the rear, ascending to a custom-built tube slide, which provides access to his inside via a hole cut in the roof. Another ladder is secured to the starboard side, providing access to an upper steel platform.
-The exterior of the sheep will be formed by a geodesic grid of light-weight hollow steel tubing, crimped and bolted onto a steel structure which is secured directly to the bus.
-He’ll be equipped with a number of radically awesome lighting effects, including LED backlighting on his body and video projected into his eyes.
-The interior of the bus is transformed into a loungey chill space in the style of a finely appointed sheep’s insides; bus seats have been removed and replaced with comfy furniture.
Tell us about the disco…
As an entertainment platform on the Playa, we are leveraging the booking talents of Honey Soundsystem co-founder Jacob Sperber, to deliver our gay agenda through sound, performance, and dance. It will be world-class DJs and performers who specialize in schooling the masses on finding their inner freak, trans/lez/homo studies, and inducing dance trances for finding your power tranimal. For each of the performers, collectives, DJs, and producers being invited to participate with the BAAAHS project, it’s not about being the biggest party, the most famous, or topping the charts.
Their endeavors are next-generation artistic projects with a focus on community, culture, activism, and queer history. While each are very successful in their own right, coming together in this way for Burning Man will be the first time this global gay underground music scene and community have been linked together with a single focus on the playa.
Who is driving the BAAAHS?
The BAAAHS Shepherds are a group of long-time burners, a few with upwards of 12-13 years of experience, committed to creating and bringing the largest queer mutant vehicle to the playa. They are a pool of talented artists, engineers, architects, sound designers, lighting designers, builders, business mavens, and all around huggable guys.
Collectively over the years, the Shepherds have contribute to some of the most unique burner experiences on and off the PLAYA, including:
-Christian Williams helped build and organize camps such as M*A*S*Hcara and JiffyLube to Technophobia and Club Fierce.
-John Major, one of the major contributors to Comfort & Joy and founder of Glow Worm (2000), Kursk (2001), Black Rock Refinery (2002), Automatic Subconscious (2003-2006), The Hive Village, and the Firefly Arts Collective & Regional Burn
-Jerrod Littlejohn and Tally Duke Floyd, co-founded the Tea Baggers Ball and are longtime members of Full-Serve/Self-Serve, co-creators of Green Gary’s Robot Lounge, Unicorn Rest-Stop, The-Future-of-Greek-Art-is-Black-Velvet Camp, and Camp Nagel
-Jacob Sperber, co-founder of Honey Sound System, longtime DJ for Comfort & Joy’s Honey Dusted Party
-Everett Wayne, two years of bringing the Tigger Truck to the playa

Risks and challenges
While the challenges of this project are many, we feel we are positioned to successfully accomplish this project. Amongst our crew of Shepherds we have a wide variety of expertise and experience, covering all bases of what we need. And being that we are based in the capitol of all that is Burningman and playa art, and our many years of experience in this world, we have a variety of resources at our fingertips in case any problems arise that we are not personally capable of solving.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
