The Campaign for the Accurate Measurement of Creativity

$12,950

Looks like you're a bit late to the party—The Campaign for the Accurate Measurement of Creativity has officially ended. But the opportunity to measure your creative output lives on—Sharpener Jars will soon be available for purchase at: store.craightonberman.com. Thanks for the interest & support.
Stay sharp,

Craighton

Every day professional "creatives" spend their waking hours sketching, writing, doodling, brainstorming, drawing, and scribbling on paper—hoping that their next amazing idea will eventually appear. This process fuels a unique angst in the modern-day artist; they spend most of their time merely thinking about what to make with nothing physical to show other than a pile of sketches. Can you get credit for creative effort without showing an end product? How is your boss going to know that you spent most of the day working and not just surfing Tumblr? How can you prove to your clients that your rates are justified despite the absence of actual finished work? Can creative output really be measured?

This is sharpener jar.
This is sharpener jar.

Sharpener Jar is a product designed to quantify creative output. A jar full of pencil shavings at the end of the day visually demonstrates your labor to yourself and those around you. The shavings tell the story of your efforts, even if there's nothing final to show for the time spent. This measurable "creative data" proves to colleagues, employers, friends, family, and—most importantly—yourself that work was accomplished, useful or not.

Finally, when the jar fills to the top with pencil shavings, it can be sealed and archived for future reference. Imagine the impact of a dozen sealed jars of your efforts displayed prominently on your bookshelf. Wow, that guy means business. Creative business.

In addition to my personal goal in bringing much needed rigor to creative output, Sharpener Jar also doubles as a useful desktop accessory for any artist, designer, illustrator, writer, or—you know—regular person who wants to sharpen a pencil.

Your support of The Campaign will be rewarded with material goods. Please peruse the following sketches:

Sharpener Jar is assembled in Chicago from parts made in the US and Germany. Ball Jars have been US-made for over 100 years. The laser-cut aluminum lid was fabricated in Chicago. The pencil sharpener was sourced from a leading US pencil sharpener company, which manufactures in Germany. All rewards are US made. Think globally, but sharpen pencils locally.

Craighton Berman is an industrial designer and illustrator based in Chicago. A visual-thinker and a designer-entrepreneur, he is equally interested in thinking and making. Craighton has design work in the permanent collection of the Art Institute of Chicago, and has contributed illustration work to Dwell, Details, and Wired.

Prior to focusing on his studio full-time, Craighton worked at a leading innovation agency where he worked to define strategic visions for future products, services, and experiences. He has also taught drawing for designers at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

He previously launched Pinch, a gourmet salt & pepper set, through Kickstarter in 2010 (One of the first projects in the Kickstarter product design category).

Sharpener Jar was originally designed for an exhibition in New York City curated by the American Design Club during the International Contemporary Furniture Fair 2011. A limited prototype edition of 6 were sold through the Steven Alan web store in 2012.

Thanks for reading, and stay sharp, folks.

Risks and challenges

No risk, no reward. However the risk here is quantifiably small.

All parts for the 1st edition of Sharpener Jar have been sourced and/or manufactured, and are ready to be assembled. The rewards have not been produced yet, but reliable vendors have been secured for production, pending successful funding.

The 2nd edition would be mainly contingent on the pencil sharpener component, which is made in Germany, and would need to be shipped to the US. All other components are more easily sourced/manufactured in the US.

Pledge to the The Campaign for the Accurate Measurement of Creativity with the utmost confidence.
