About this project
Virginia Terpening (b. Missouri, 1917-2007) is one of the Midwest's few mid-century female painters to be nationally recognized and exhibited. Last spring, her entire collection of paintings, sketches, and illustrations were suddenly unearthed from the Lewistown, Missouri, trailer in which she spent her final days. The Riverfront Times made a big splash featuring this discovery as its October 11 cover story (http://www.riverfronttimes.com/2013-10-10/culture/virginia-terpening-art-trailer-discovered-lewistown-st-louis/), but ensuing attempts to auction her oeuvre were unsuccessful. Who will save this feminist Midwestern artist from utter and senseless obscurity? Who will rescue her reputation--her paintings, sketches, and legacy?
Enter: The Hinge. Heralded by St. Louis Magazine as the city's Best New Art Gallery in 2013, The Hinge (www.thehingestl.com) has long championed the under-dog genius, whether it be Poland's Ryszard Kaja or overlooked talent from the St. Louis area. We aim to forge a Terpening collection that challenges misconceptions about women painters, the state of Missouri, and the plight of artists "undiscovered" in their day. But we can't do it alone.
A labor of love in every sense, The Hinge has heretofore been funded solely through the grit and gusto of its cofounders. The Virginia Terpening auction commences Monday, November 18th, and we plan to purchase as many pieces as this kickstarter affords. Culminating in a focused Virginia Terpening exhibition for winter/spring 2014, our efforts count on you for support. If you can't spare $25, pass the word along to someone who can. Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus...
Risks and challenges
With limited funds but unlimited ardor, The Hinge's greatest challenge is discerning how best to collect this artist's work with the means available. Depending on the vagaries of the November 18 auction, this may mean purchasing fewer works of more consistent caliber and distinction, or a broader purview of works spanning the decades of Terpening's lifetime. Regardless, our efforts will culminate in a 2014 exhibition of Virginia Terpening's work at our gallery, and thereafter we will strive to donate as many pieces as possible to both national and local galleries, museums, libraries, schools, post offices, and other non-for-profits. Our aim is not financial, but rather to boost the repute of Virginia Terpening and expand The Hinge's regional impact.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
