About this project
Thank you for taking the time to read this short message!
In the last few months, our team has been working tirelessly on a game that is engaging, suitable for new players and financially accessible. We want to introduce more people to the world of meeples, dice and hexes and let them explore this true passion of ours. I remember how much I’ve always loved sitting around the table with the dearest of people: the competition, the tension, the laughter, the genuine surprise when someone unexpectedly steals the victory at the last moment, the enjoyment. It has always been a dream of mine to make something that would give someone else the same feeling of sincere delight and amusement.
Et voilà, Among Thieves! The making of this game has been long and hard and toilsome, but so far we have been kindly supported by friends, family and a good part of the local community – I am proud to say we recently won an award for Most Anticipated Game in Bulgaria (read more below!).
Now, we’re counting on You!
And you have my deepest gratitude.
A band of thieves once gathered at a table in a small tavern. They drank and sang and drank again until one of them started boasting about his incredible skills.
“You, boys, can’t take a penny from a beggar”, he said.
“Ha!” snorted another one, offended. “Says who? Mr. I-rob-old-ladies? None of you are my equal!”
A third thief laughed so hard, she almost fell off her chair. They all started arguing, shouting at each other, inventing the grossest of insults. Just when a fight seemed the inevitable end of this quarrel, the youngest of them managed to attract everyone’s attention.
“Oi! Calm down, brothers, no need for blood. Say, we’re all betting men, are we not? How 'bout a wager to settle this once and for all, eh?”
And so it began.
Among Thieves is a fast-paced card game of thievery, cunning and dishonourable deeds, designed for 3-5 players and appropriate for practically all ages.
You take the role of a thief, trying to outsmart the others and amass a greater fortune to prove your superiority. Everyone has the same set of action cards and each turn selects two, placing them face-down in front of himself or herself. Then, starting with the Acting Master Thief (first player), all players take turns in revealing their cards and completing their effect. At the end of the round, one of the two actions played is secretly discarded and play continues until there is a clear winner.
Playtime is 15-35 minutes.
In the box you will find:
- A detailed rulebook;
- Five sets of 5 Action cards (Stretch goal: +1 additional set!);
- Ten Heist Location cards;
- 31 coin tokens;
- One Acting Master Thief marker (Stretch goal: wooden!);
The rules are pretty simple: each turn you choose two of your available action cards, place them face-down in front of you and then take turns resolving them one at a time. You win if you manage to have 7+ coins and you're the richest player at the end of the round.

The Action cards
Every action differs from the others - some allow you to gain gold by robbing innocent citizens or performing high-profile heists, some let you frustrate the plans of others, and - of course - the No Honour action enables you to steal directly from a player!
As you discard one of the action cards at the end of the round, you should carefully plan what you keep and what you are ready to let go of.
Note: You cannot play the same combination in two consecutive turns. However, when you are left with just two cards and have to discard at the end of the round, you get all previously discarded action cards back. Use this to your advantage!
The Heist Locations
If you manage to perform a successful Heist, the suspense is not yet over. This high-risk, high-reward action might land you a small fortune in just one turn, but it might very well land you in jail...
Rule: If you happen to turn over a jail card, don't worry - you're not skipping your next turn or something. But you have to bribe the jailor with a coin before you can go free.
We really wanted the game to have it's own atmosphere, so our awesome designers even created a custom coin (note, that they are the same as those featured on the Heist Location cards):
Also, we loved the idea so much, that we contacted a local craftsman to see if he can recreate the design in metal. He can, but the cost is considerable, so we created a special Reward Tier - the Master Thief's Set - which includes metal coins and a pouch to carry them!
First Player Marker
In the process of playtesting, we somehow reached the conclusion that "Master Thief" is to be considered a title of the highest praise. So we named our first player the Acting Master Thief, implying that he changes, as each turn a new player gets to hold the marker.
Rule: At the start of the game, whoever snatches the marker gets to be the first player. Thieves will be thieves.
- Awesome gateway game for newcomers to the hobby, but also highly enjoyable for seasoned players;
- It's thoroughly atmospheric, both as a visual design and as game mechanics;
- Speaking of design, you get five different sets of action cards - no two cards are the same (except for the No Honour ones)! - 5 Steals, 5 Traps, 5 Sabotages, 5 Heists. And all with the awesome hand-drawn art of Eleonora Asparuhova;
- It offers a well-balanced mixture of strategy and intuition... much like real life;
- It’s highly interactive and inclusive for everyone sitting ‘round the table;
- There are many ways for the tides to turn in a single round, so it's a challenge until the very end. Only the most astute thrive!
- It's a nice legal way to be declared "Master Thief" without having to actually steal a bunch of things or break any other laws.
We were also the only board game to make it to the Final Five! The competition was fierce and it was a really close-run thing, but in the end, we emerged victorious, thanks to the vote of all the people who have supported and encouraged us throughout the past few months.
It's an indescribable pride to be the recipient of such an award at the first ever nationwide event of this nature and magnitude and we are truly honored (hehe, #nohonor, though!) to be among the chosen few.
We also got to shake the hand of the amazing Julian Gollop, who was the one to give us the prize!
We are most glad to present to you the review of Among Thieves by the awesome NVS Gameplays! Thank you so much for the opportunity and for the outstanding video, Michael!
Note, that in the following review an earlier prototype of the game is featured and it is not the final artwork! Аlso, there have been slight changes to the rules, but nothing dramatic.
We also recently participated in the Cardboard Edison Award competition and here is what feedback we got from some of the judges (although, sadly - anonymous):
"The game's theme and mechanisms fit together very well, and create an excellent atmosphere of distrust and suspicion. I felt like it would be very easy to get into the "feel" of this game."
"Among thieves absolutely focuses its interactions on a tight double-guessing mechanic. The uncertainty of player actions will lead to some good gameplay tension and laughter/cries of relief/anguish."
"This game is tread ground, both thematically and mechanically, but Among Thieves is a simple and well-executed version of both."
As we believe in quality over quantity, we have decided that, instead of making up new and new things, for every 1500$ we get we're going to improve the current stretch goals - from better cardboard for the components to more content, both in the form of drawings and writings. We'd also love to include small gifts like badges, key chains, etc, so we promise to look for any opportunities and regularly update you!
Concerning the shipping, we have sought out the most secure, fastest and most trustworthy way. We have spoken to the creators of other Bulgarian projects, discussed terms with the postal services and finally we selected the optimal possible option.
For the USA and EU - 10$ per game.
For the rest of the world - 15$ per game.
For Bulgaria, shipping is 100% free!
Also note that, to reduce shipping costs, all the pledges with more than one copy of the game will be shipped together for a lower price!
The MASTER THIEF'S SET is heavier (metal coins) and has a slightly higher shipping cost - 15$ for the EU/USA and 17$ for all other countries!
All games will be shipped from Bulgaria!
When all this started, we were super lucky to meet each other and connect through our mutual love of games and our desire to contribute to the awesome community of tabletop players as best as we can. Each one having a very particular set of skills was of grand help and aided us greatly in bringing this project to life!
*In case you're wondering what exactly is that Peter does, he's the one who brought us together and handles all the publicity and networking that we need.

We'd also like to express our special thanks to a few people, who we feel are also an irreplaceable part of this project:
to Alexandar Negrevsky and Teodor Ralev, for making the project video and for doing it both quickly and wonderfully;
to Naso Ruskov, for the amazing voice-over of said video;
to Nikola Petrov and Alexandra Shkodrova from Eriney, for composing the awesome music you can hear in the video;
to Ivaylo Manov, the magician behind the dramatic playthrough located in the Rules section of this page;
to Nicolas Pignon, for offering to translate our rules and campaign in French and for doing it in just a day, and also for helping us spread the word in France.
Risks and challenges
Аs this is our first game and our first crowdfunding campaign, we have faced the inevitable read-and-learn process about Kickstarter, taxes, shipping, accounting, etc. Fortunately, we've had the help of some amazing people both in Bulgaria and the U.S. so we've sorted all possible misunderstandings out!
The game is 100% ready to print. We shall do that with the funds gathered here and then immediately start sending out the copies to all backers.
The only thing that might slow us down a bit is the transfer of funds from the U.S. to Bulgaria, but we've established some good deadlines and it should be no problem at all! ((:Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
