About

My name is Matthew Diaz and I am in the process of coding a unique hacker game for the PC called Retro Hacker. RH is now a working prototype and hopefully with the support of you fine folks it can become much more. RH simulates hacking from a computer terminal with a text based operating system similar to DOS. There is no mouse support, no sound, no music and no graphics. There is just text. It is also coded from the ground up using Microsoft Visual Studio C++ and the DirectX API. Windows Vista or better and DirectX 11 or higher is needed to run RH. I chose to not make RH a console program because I wanted the fonts to scale when displaying in fullscreen.

RH simulates what hacking could of been like in the early 90's. It is heavily influenced by other hacker games such as Uplink and Hacker Evolution, but it has that open world feel that made Uplink so special. Think of RH as being Uplink meets DOS. You will be able to upload files, download files, delete files, create directories/folders, connect to other computers and so much more. The goal of RH is to give the player the same freedom we all had when we used to use text based operating systems. RH is hardcore in this respect. To help those new to text interfaces, a tutorial will be available.

RH will also include a main story with elaborate objectives and also side missions for extra money for upgrades and new programs. Players will be able to connect to a "Hacker BBS" which will serve as the main hub where missions, programs and computer upgrades are available. Tracing will be simulated also which will increase the tension on every mission. If you are hacking game enthusiast as I am myself, then RH is right up your alley.

Risks and challenges

If the goal is reached I will have what I need to finish Retro Hacker for a planned release date sometime early 2019. Likely before then RH can be released as an early access on Steam. If the pledge goal is reached then RH will continue development until released and I will put a website together to showcase ongoing developments. A download for a DRM free copy for backers only will be available on the website upon release.
