Magical and safe: The magical spell that glows in the dark is made with non-toxic glowing ink. This is a water-based ink that does not need power to light up. Simply leave the lights on 30 minutes before going to bed to recharge the light-powered ink and you are all set.
With no batteries and no electricity required, you don’t have to worry about things going wrong.
The comforter/duvet is guaranteed to stay in place: Never wake up with the comforter bunched in a ball again. We added four interior corner ties inside the cover to ensure the comforter/duvet stays in place.

How did your parents help you when you were afraid of the dark? My parents bought me a nightlight which helped, but didn't cure my fears. Most recent studies have found that night lights or dismissing monsters as being 'not real' are counterproductive. Children have a very vivid imagination and do not have the ability to rationalize their fears.

Once we found out how big this problem was, there was no way we could give up on this project, no matter how challenging it was at times. To bring Glow Away to the general market in a financially sustainable way and end fear of the dark, we need to be able to place an order for 2,000 pieces. Each reward will tell you how your contribution will impact our goal so that you can have a clear idea of the impact you are having on this cause.

Reaching our $20k goal will enable us to fulfill the rewards and pay for our PR team, production and designers. However, to end fear of the dark we need a significantly higher amount. The reason we set our goal to $20k was purely strategic. To raise awareness about this challenge we needed this project to rank high on Kickstarter’s popularity list and one of the factors taken into consideration is the percentage of the project already funded.
However, to bring Glow Away to market and end fear of the dark we realistically need at least $60k. Here’s a breakdown of our costs for the first 6 months:

It’s been a long journey to bring this project to life, but no matter how challenging it was at times, we never considered giving up. Once we realized how many kids we could help by bringing this to life, there was just no reason that was good enough for us to raise the white flag - and trust us, we have had some tough challenges.
Glow Away started to take shape in Sri Lanka, in the back of a tuk tuk on our way from Dambulla to Sigiriya. Charley and I were researching inspiration for our character and by the time we got back home we had a name: Boo.
We got in touch with a bunch of illustrators and asked them to pitch us what they envisioned Boo to look like based on the story. Once we saw Luli Bunny's initial submission we knew she was the one. Budget was our next big challenge but Luli really loved the project and decided to work with what we had (for which we’ll be grateful forever). After a few rounds discussing broken horns, crooked teeth, fur and color (long debates whether Boo should be Blue or Yellow), we finally landed on what Boo is today and a similar process went onto refining all the illustrations for the book.
Our next challenge was finding the perfect manufacturer. Neither of us had experience with this industry but had a good idea of what a nice duvet should feel like and had a great mentor from Virgin Startup that guided us through the process.
We settled on what seemed to be a great factory, which unfortunately was not up to our expectations. Once we got their prototype, we discovered that the print and the colors weren't right (despite very precise instructions), the glowing ink was too yellow and sticky, and some other basic things just weren't done properly. We brought this up with our vendor who regretfully informed that’s the best they could do. Charley and I (at this point on a work trip to San Francisco), were wandering around The Mission and felt pretty defeated at the idea of having to find another supplier. You have no idea how many hours we had spent talking to this one. This was also going to push us back of at least 2 months and miss Christmas sales. However, one thing was for sure. We were not going to settle for anything that wasn't perfect, and this was far from it. So the hunt was on again.
A few days after we started talking to who turned out to be the best duvet manufacturer ever. We knew we had found a good one after the first few emails. In a couple of days we had a color proof couriered over to them. Five days later we got fabric samples and their first attempt at color matching it. We went comp shopping in major boutique in New York to see what premium children bedding looks and feels like. Our factory’s cotton percale was gorgeous, way better than most premium children bedding brands out there, so that was an easy decision. A week later we had an actual color-matched prototype on our desks. Charley and I were blown away. The quality was amazing: the duvet was super soft, the seams were perfect, the glowing ink was beautiful. This is exactly how we envisioned it to be.
It’s been a challenging project, but it was so worth it, because when everything was finally delivered we were over the moon. Seeing the product of all those hours of brainstorming, work, worrying and laughing materialized into something tangible, standing in front of us, was one of the most rewarding feelings.
We hope this little bit of 'behind the scenes' gives you an idea of how much work and passion we have put into this - all while both still employed full-time with highly demanding jobs.

Risks and challenges
For the duvet cover, we have finalized the fabrics, the buttons, seams, and colors and have already traveled to our factories to train them on the requirements for all the intricacies of this special design.
This effort paid off. We have already received the first small batch for proof of concept of books, duvets and packaging and we are happy to say that everything is looking absolutely gorgeous and feels extremely premium.
