This month has been quite the experience. Your support and the press we've received for Glow Away has been awesome. We are extremely grateful for everything you've done to help us and look forwards to moving onwards and upwards!
Glow Away is the only solution to children's fear of the dark on the market that truly understands the root cause of the problem.
By harnessing the power of children's imaginations, Glow Away transforms the cause of children’s fears into the solution, empowering them to overcome their fear.
Glow Away is a two piece set consisting of a bedtime story book and a magical duvet cover that work in synergy.
Studies show that children are unable to rationalize their fears. Glow Away uses this understanding to create a magical world that empowers your child. In the book, Boo (the yellow fellow) teaches Sam a spell that will protect him from monsters at night. Once this spell is chanted, Sam sees the spell glow on his duvet.
Our magical duvet cover creates a direct connection between your child and Sam. After reading the story, say the spell together with your little one and switch off the lights. The spell that you just chanted together will now glow on your child’s duvet. This is tangible proof that the magic has worked for your child too. Protection from night time monsters is right there, visibly shining on what always provided them relief: their blanket. Welcome to our magical club.
Don’t be fooled: this isn’t just a duvet cover, it’s a comprehensive solution to fear of the dark.
With Glow Away, we wanted to design something unisex that would fit into any room. The design of each element has been tested on focus groups to ensure that both parents and kids will love it.
Behind the attractive design is a long research journey into materials and features that make this perfect and safe.
- A timeless story: Easy to read, rhyming 20 page full color storybook illustrated by award winning artist Luli Bunny
- Not just words: Written following psychologists’ guidelines proven to help children affected by fear and anxiety
Magical and safe: The magical spell that glows in the dark is made with non-toxic glowing ink. This is a water-based ink that does not need power to light up. Simply leave the lights on 30 minutes before going to bed to recharge the light-powered ink and you are all set.
With no batteries and no electricity required, you don’t have to worry about things going wrong.
The comforter/duvet is guaranteed to stay in place: Never wake up with the comforter bunched in a ball again. We added four interior corner ties inside the cover to ensure the comforter/duvet stays in place.
Premium Materials: Super soft percale cotton machine washable. A percale weave is noticeably denser and wears well over time.
For all seasons: To use it in winter, simply insert a heavy comforter inside our duvet cover. To use it in summer, take out the comforter, and the duvet cover becomes a fresh set of bed sheets.
- Multiple colors: Available in pink or blue, single size. Part of proceeds from the limited pink version go to the Children's Sleep Charity.
- Suitable for everybody: Don’t have a duvet? Just put your comforter/blanket inside our cover- it's the same thing!
- Reusable keepsake box: You’ll love this beautiful and sturdy box- it’s ideal for stashing small toys, pens and pencils.
- Designed for kids: Child-safe magnetic closures.
- The perfect gift: Glow Away has a unisex design that fits in with most bedrooms’ decor.
How did your parents help you when you were afraid of the dark? My parents bought me a nightlight which helped, but didn't cure my fears. Most recent studies have found that night lights or dismissing monsters as being 'not real' are counterproductive. Children have a very vivid imagination and do not have the ability to rationalize their fears.
Glow Away is the only solution on the market that addresses the root cause of children's fear.
Simply put, because we can't stop kids being afraid of the dark without your support. This is a great opportunity for you to back something with a social purpose that you’ll be proud to tell your friends about, once Glow Away hits the market.
Fear of the dark affects 50% of children between the ages of 2 and 7. That's 18M kids in the USA alone. Once we found out how big this problem was, there was no way we could give up on this project, no matter how challenging it was at times. This represents a chance to make a difference to so many people's lives; children and parents.
For a 5 year old, monsters under your bed is as scary as things get. If you have been afraid of the dark or know someone who has, we are sure you'll agree that it is a painful problem that needs to be ended once and for all, but we can’t do this without you.
We’ve created a wide range of rewards (not just for kids) so we hope you’ll find something you like, for yourself or a loved one, because without your support we won't beat fear of the dark.
To bring Glow Away to the general market in a financially sustainable way and end fear of the dark, we need to be able to place an order for 2,000 pieces. Each reward will tell you how your contribution will impact our goal so that you can have a clear idea of the impact you are having on this cause.
*The rewards are to be considered as gifts for tax purposes. By purchasing a reward you are not buying a product, but making a donation to our cause for which you will receive a gift (the reward you have chosen).
Reaching our $20k goal will enable us to fulfill the rewards and pay for our PR team, production and designers. However, to end fear of the dark we need a significantly higher amount. The reason we set our goal to $20k was purely strategic. To raise awareness about this challenge we needed this project to rank high on Kickstarter’s popularity list and one of the factors taken into consideration is the percentage of the project already funded.
However, to bring Glow Away to market and end fear of the dark we realistically need at least $60k. Here’s a breakdown of our costs for the first 6 months:
Here's a table highlighting your impact on ending fear of the dark based on your donation:
You are the key to our success. In order for us to raise $60k, we'll need you to become an ambassador of this cause. Get as many people as possible involved. Tell them that you care. Explain them how important it is to end fear of the dark and get them onboard.
Here are some incentives for you to spread the message.
Hello, we're Davide and Charlotte! We met at University, where we developed a unique approach to problems and creative solutions. Ever since, we have spent our free time working with Startups and NGO's to develop new products, services, and communications.
"Davide is one of those (annoyingly) impressive people who you can't help but love for his charm and relentless enthusiasm. He has a background in consulting and entrepreneurship; starting his own design studio for fashion advertising when he was 16, moving to London when he was 18 to study Advertising, and then being relocated to New York in 2012 to oversee the opening of the first US branch for his former employer. He loves Venezuelan food, plays squash every morning and seizes every opportunity to travel to developing countries - he finds it really enriching and inspirational."
"Charlotte has worked in advertising with some of the biggest brands as a Creative Strategist. First at Mother, then at JWT, now at Protein. She's an incredibly bright person who's always pushing herself and the conventional approach to problem-solving to find surprising, creative solutions. She's the definition of a free spirit and balances months of hard work with surfing the waves of the most remote places."
In true red-carpet style, we couldn't have done this without the help of these wonderful people. In a semi-particular order, here are the superstars behind Glow Away who will be eagerly praying for your support to see their hard work come to life:

It’s been a long journey to bring this project to life, but no matter how challenging it was at times, we never considered giving up. Once we realized how many kids we could help by bringing this to life, there was just no reason that was good enough for us to raise the white flag - and trust us, we have had some tough challenges.
Glow Away started to take shape in Sri Lanka, in the back of a tuk tuk on our way from Dambulla to Sigiriya. Charley and I were researching inspiration for our character and by the time we got back home we had a name: Boo.
We got in touch with a bunch of illustrators and asked them to pitch us what they envisioned Boo to look like based on the story. Once we saw Luli Bunny's initial submission we knew she was the one. Budget was our next big challenge but Luli really loved the project and decided to work with what we had (for which we’ll be grateful forever). After a few rounds discussing broken horns, crooked teeth, fur and color (long debates whether Boo should be Blue or Yellow), we finally landed on what Boo is today and a similar process went onto refining all the illustrations for the book.
Our next challenge was finding the perfect manufacturer. Neither of us had experience with this industry but had a good idea of what a nice duvet should feel like and had a great mentor from Virgin Startup that guided us through the process.
We settled on what seemed to be a great factory, which unfortunately was not up to our expectations. Once we got their prototype, we discovered that the print and the colors weren't right (despite very precise instructions), the glowing ink was too yellow and sticky, and some other basic things just weren't done properly. We brought this up with our vendor who regretfully informed that’s the best they could do. Charley and I (at this point on a work trip to San Francisco), were wandering around The Mission and felt pretty defeated at the idea of having to find another supplier. You have no idea how many hours we had spent talking to this one. This was also going to push us back of at least 2 months and miss Christmas sales. However, one thing was for sure. We were not going to settle for anything that wasn't perfect, and this was far from it. So the hunt was on again.
A few days after we started talking to who turned out to be the best duvet manufacturer ever. We knew we had found a good one after the first few emails. In a couple of days we had a color proof couriered over to them. Five days later we got fabric samples and their first attempt at color matching it. We went comp shopping in major boutique in New York to see what premium children bedding looks and feels like. Our factory’s cotton percale was gorgeous, way better than most premium children bedding brands out there, so that was an easy decision. A week later we had an actual color-matched prototype on our desks. Charley and I were blown away. The quality was amazing: the duvet was super soft, the seams were perfect, the glowing ink was beautiful. This is exactly how we envisioned it to be.
It’s been a challenging project, but it was so worth it, because when everything was finally delivered we were over the moon. Seeing the product of all those hours of brainstorming, work, worrying and laughing materialized into something tangible, standing in front of us, was one of the most rewarding feelings.
We hope this little bit of 'behind the scenes' gives you an idea of how much work and passion we have put into this - all while both still employed full-time with highly demanding jobs.
Now it’s up to you to take on this challenge and end fear of the dark once and for all.
Please back us to make Glow Away a reality.
Thank you for reading!

Risks and challenges
For the duvet cover, we have finalized the fabrics, the buttons, seams, and colors and have already traveled to our factories to train them on the requirements for all the intricacies of this special design.
This effort paid off. We have already received the first small batch for proof of concept of books, duvets and packaging and we are happy to say that everything is looking absolutely gorgeous and feels extremely premium.
We have built in enough time to compensate for any delays or problems we may run into and will keep you updated and well informed so you know just how close you are to getting the perfectly made product we promised you.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
