Riding the train can evoke some of our most primitive emotions, anger and frustration, or it can stir in us what makes us most human, our compassion and empathy. A Single Ride fuses the underground dance styles of breaking, house and vogue to reflect on these emotions and asks the fundamental questions: Where are we going? Where do we come from? And, where is that train?
A Single Ride opens on September 20th and is a night of many firsts. It is my first time being commissioned to create a new work, my first time creating an evening-length work, my first time working so closely with such wonderful lighting and projection designers, and my first time working with a composer to create an original score. This process has undoubtedly been an invaluable learning experience for my life as an artist. Your help here is also an invaluable part of the process.
Please join me in supporting the wonderful collaborators that are working with me on A Single Ride. All donations are completely tax-deductible. I firmly believe in paying all my collaborators for their time, talent and dedication, and know first hand how difficult it is to balance a freelance-artist-life in New York City.
I am very fortunate to be working with a group of dancers who are unique in their ability to blend dance styles, as well as tell a story. Ljuba Castot, Teena Marie Custer, Val "Ms. Vee" Ho, Erin Holmes, Richard Maguire and MiRi "Seoulsonyk" Park are extraordinary performers and artists. Their credits include Cirque Eloize, Rent, Erotic Broadway, Rennie Harris Puremovement, Urban Bush Women and Doug Elkins & Friends. For complete artist bios, please visit www.ephratasherie.com.
My vision to create a new and abstracted form of the New York City subway system would be impossible without Tim Cryan, our lighting designer, and David Bengali, our projection designer. It is the first time I am working so collaboratively with both a lighting and projection designer, and it has been inspiring to have both these wonderful artists involved so closely in the creative process. They are an integral part of the show. For more information please visit timcryan.net and davidbengali.com.
A Single Ride is the first time I am working with a composer to create original music. Collaborating with composer Marty Beller has been a highlight of this experience, not only because of the beautiful and expressive music he is creating, but also how much I am learning from his creative practice.
As a choreographer, I believe that in order to create a community of artists that can keep prospering, it is my responsibility to ensure that my performers and collaborators are compensated for their time and talent.
I thank you in advance for your support and for allowing my collaborators and performers to keep creating.
Hope to see you at the show!
September 20-22nd and 27-29th 7:30pm at Dixon Place.
