The Power of Story
This oracle is a little different than your average Tarot-derived deck. It offers guidance and insight not through visual imagery, but through the power of Story - in particular, a story archetype I call "Girls Underground."
Girls Underground tales most often take the form of novels and films for both adults and teens, although the idea is so old it can be found in ancient mythology (Persephone, Inanna), and later in popular fairy tales (Beauty and the Beast, The Six Swans). They involve initiatory journeys - often literally underground - in which a girl or woman explores a perilous Otherworld with several companions, confronts an Adversary, and learns the lessons necessary to reach her goal, ending up transformed.
The original inspiration for the idea was the classic 80's fantasy movie Labyrinth (and to a lesser degree, Alice in Wonderland) and fans will recognize many of the elements of Sarah's journey in these cards.

I have been chronicling the many Girls Underground examples I've found (about 250 so far!) on my blog for almost a decade. I have explored the archetype deeply and believe that it is much more than a literary trope - it contains spiritual truths, and can function as a map for our lived experiences. With that in mind, I have created this oracle.
Each of the 50 cards in this deck contain either a common plot point or a lesson from Girls Underground stories. When drawn in response to a question, these cards can reveal where you are in your narrative, warn you of pitfalls to avoid, remind you of important messages, and encourage you during challenging times.
Please note that this oracle deck is for anyone who feels connected to or inspired by the Girls Underground archetype or the many stories and myths in which it manifests. There is no age or gender requirement for using these cards!
*All photos on this page are mock-ups only, as the final products have not been created yet.
The cards will be 2.5" x 2.5" squares with rounded edges, printed on sturdy 330 gsm black core stock. They have black text on a white background, with numbers that provide easy reference to the descriptions in the guidebook. The backs feature the spiral/roots logo. They come in a printed tuck box.
I have written a 100-page guidebook (in a 5" x 5" format) that describes the Girls Underground archetype more fully, discusses some of the background behind the idea, instructs the reader on how to use the oracle (with several types of readings suggested, plus other ways to use the cards), and most importantly gives interpretations for each card - exploring how that plot point or lesson appears in the archetypal Story, and what it might mean in the context of a divinatory reading. I've included lots of quotes from Girls Underground examples to illuminate and inspire!
If you want to support my project but do not wish to receive the oracle, you can pledge at the Companion level and I will send you a Girls Underground bookmark as a thank you! To receive the oracle, choose one of these levels:
Basic Diviner - just the oracle deck (which comes in a tuck box with the spiral/roots design) and the guidebook.
Deluxe Diviner - the oracle deck (in its tuck box) will come in a 3" x 5" double-drawstring cotton bag printed with the spiral/roots design, along with a single 12mm black die (which is needed for a couple of the methods of using the oracle). You will also receive the guidebook, and a Girls Underground bookmark.
Explorer - the oracle deck and die in cotton bag, guidebook, bookmark, plus a 5" x 8" recycled notebook printed with the Girls Underground spiral/roots logo, perfect for keeping records of your divinations, or taking notes from GU books.
Reader - the oracle deck and die in cotton bag, guidebook, bookmark, notebook, plus a tote bag perfect for carrying around the Girls Underground books you are reading! Bag is 100% cotton, 15" x 15" with black handles, and the spiral/roots logo in black on a natural color background.
Seeker - the oracle deck and die in cotton bag, guidebook, bookmark, notebook, tote bag, plus one question answered via a cartomancy divination session. I have been practicing divination for over 20 years, primarily with Tarot cards and other oracle decks. I offer remote divination sessions almost every Wednesday - if you choose this perk, we will coordinate to find a good time for your reading sometime between October and December.
Benefactor - the oracle deck and die in cotton bag, guidebook, bookmark, notebook, tote bag, cartomancy session, and in gratitude for your generosity, I will personally thank you by name in the acknowledgements of the guidebook!
*Please note - the Basic Diviner, Deluxe Diviner, and Explorer levels are available to international backers, however you will need to add $15 to cover additional international shipping charges.
Over half of the funding goal will go to the initial print run of both the cards and the booklets. Shipping will cost about 13%, and Kickstarter fees account for about 8%. The rest will pay for ordering the various perks, packaging and accessories, as well as miscellaneous costs such as font licensing fees.
Barring any totally unforeseen and uncontrollable circumstances, I plan to have all perks shipped out in time for delivery before Yule (at least for U.S. addresses) - hopefully earlier. I will send out Project Updates as I pinpoint more specific shipping dates.
My name is Kate Winter and I am a writer, artist and ritualist living in the Pacific Northwest. I hold a degree in comparative mythology and ritual, and am the author of several books. I have also been practicing divination for over 20 years. I am - not surprisingly - an unabashed book addict, and I especially enjoy young adult fantasy novels, which is the most common genre of Girls Underground stories. My favorite movie hands-down is Labyrinth, which I have seen hundreds of times.
Risks and challenges
The Girls Underground Story Oracle (both cards and guidebook) is already designed and ready for printing, so I fully expect to be able to deliver on time. The only variable I can't control is printing times or possible mistakes, but I've padded my timing a little to account for this.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
