Cave Dogs brings together visual artists, musicians, puppeteers, dancers, storytellers and writers in the spirit of experimental interdisciplinary collaboration. We have created a method of storytelling by combining shadow performance and multi-media technology. Our medium evolves out of two ancient traditions—shadow puppet theatre and storytelling–and several contemporary art forms– film, video, computer-generated animation and performance art. Our performances consist of innovative, large-scale shadow projections cast onto a screen from props, puppets and the human body. Cast shadows move in concert with projected video imagery, spoken narrative, and an original soundtrack.
The Malmö Festival (in Swedish: Malmöfestivalen) is one of the largest cutural festivals in scandinavia. It offers everything from groundbreaking art, music and culture to a variety of food that reflects the intercultural vibes and people of Malmö. Cave Dogs is the only US group to be invited to perform at the festival. We are greatly honored to perform our current show at such a wonderful, international venue.
Cave Dogs current show, Sure-Minded Uncertainties, is an inter-media, contemporary shadow theater performance that explores the nature of existence on the physical and metaphysical planes through the alternative lenses of micro and macro perspectives, situations and experiences. A range of characters and modern day archetypes navigate a series of transformations throughout five scenes interweaving the nature of the universe, the relationships of parts to whole, and humanity to technology in their fundamentally different and often incongruous worlds. It is a story that is as old as dirt and as prescient as tomorrow.
The Malmo Festival has made a small contribution towards travel and Cave Dogs received a Project Grant from the Jim Henson Foundation, in 2010-11 to produce the Sure-Minded Uncertainties. Now we have an opportunity to take the show to scandinavia. All money pledged through Kickstarter will be used to make up the balance to cover plane tickets, car rental, gas, lodging, food, and transporting show props. We set our Kickstarter goal at $4000, but we hope pledges exceed goal as our costs certainly will.
