Almost every time I get custom dice at an event, games convention, or from a company as a promo tool, they're six-sided, gorgeously produced, and with lovely art. Except almost every time, the art is in place of the one, instead of the six!
Surely you want to see your awesome art show up when people roll sixes, not when they roll crappy ones- And that got me thinking: What if there were dice with reassuring, calming statements for when you roll ones?
We've all had bad experiences playing RPGs, we've all had bad rolls bleed over into our feelings, and frankly sometimes we need a reminder that this is just a game, we have to step back, take a breath, and know that we're just here to have fun with friends.
And so, I'm making these dice. Gorgeous Chessex d6s, with reassuring statements etched into the 1 face. If at first you don't succeed... Just take a breath. Failure in RPGs just makes for a more interesting story, anyway. Feel free to use these dice to promote kindness at your table or event in games of DnD, Pathfinder, Shadowrun, GURPs, Burning Wheel or Fiasco.
I want this to be an exercise in getting cool things into the world (I'm not making much, if any money off this!), as well as understanding how Kickstarter works, so I'm going about this project by the Quickstarter ethos, a Kickstarter initiative that follows (put simply) the following tenets:
- Quickstarter is fun.
- Quickstarter is DIY.
- Quickstarter won’t take over your life.
- Quickstarter is not a job.
- Quickstarter is no big deal.
- Quickstarter is about thinking small.
Why not a full set of polyhedral dice? D20s, d10s?
Six-sided dice are both the easiest, fastest and the cheapest to produce- If the response for this project is good, I will likely make efforts to get a full polyhedral set made.
Risks and challenges
There are few major risks. At present, I'm raising just about enough to cover shipping and production costs of 50 units of two dice each, which isn't a massive amount. I have a history of delivering primarily in event management, and my own work is of a freelance nature so I am flexible as regards time and have portioned out time over the next few months to allow for handling all shipping and packing arrangements. The creation of the dice will take around six weeks, whereupon they'll then be shipped by me, adding a couple of weeks on. Ideally, the project should be wrapped within three months of funding.
Customs fees may be incurred by myself on the main dice order from the manufacturer- I have set aside funds to cover this and this will not impede the creation of said dice. I have already obtained a quote for the dice from the manufacturer, and mockups have been created which you can see above.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
