The Dream of Flight!

Missile Mode Flight

We proved our aircraft could take off and land vertically with ease. But we weren’t satisfied. We wanted a UAV that could hover like a helicopter and fly forward like a missile. An aircraft that could take-off and hover in a “nose-up” configuration and then pitch over into “missile-mode” would be faster and more efficient than both helicopters and fixed-wing airplanes. This is the new capability our QuadRKT platform brings the US government, private companies, and now hobbyists. The design requires no complicated mechanisms to transition between hover mode and “missile mode” flight and back again. The wings do not need to be sized for take-off and landing so they are smaller and simpler than a comparable fixed-wing airplane’s wings. That means less weight and less drag which result in longer flight times and higher top speeds. The 13-year-old in each of us wants one of these!

Making all previous UAV technology obsolete.  

Traditionally, the ability to hover came at a cost of forward speed. The “holy grail” of aircraft is a vehicle that can hover like a helicopter and fly horizontally like a conventional airplane or missile. This is accomplished through both structural elements and design. The net effect is a dramatically reduced “wetted” surface enabling the aircraft to perform both a VTOL hover and a forward high-speed travel.  Meet The XQ-139 QuadRKT Prototypes

 
  • The QuadSPRW™ aircraft is the training vehicle. It is a small-framed durable bird capable of both modes of flight, but priced for the hobbyist and for training pilots for dual-mode flight. The SPRWTM is available now. 
  • The QuadRKT™ is a version of the QuadSparrow modified to carry a 1/2A solid rocket motor and launch from a conventional model rocket launch pad. Launch off the rail and rather than recover it under a parachute, fly it back to the launch pad, and it’s ready to launch again with a fresh rocket motor. Includes a pack of four custom rocket motors with igniters and plugs.
  •  The QuadHWK™ is our fully-featured aircraft showcasing missile mode flight (with or without the use of an onboard quadrotor control board “in the loop”) in your choice of three airframe options. All QuadHawk aircraft include the airframe, two sets of four propellers, a removable nose cone assembly capable of accepting your choice of radio receiver and battery, and a gear pack. This aircraft is compatible with any programmable radio system having six or more available channels (throttle, aileron, rudder, elevator, a gear channel, and an auxiliary channel). Flight without the quadrotor control board will require a transmitter capable of at least twin-engine yaw mixing. For fully-featured 3D airplane flight, we use the Spektrum DX9. Compatible flight files for the DX6i, DX8, and DX9 transmitters will be available for free download on our webpage.

The QuadRKT family of aircraft began life as a technology demonstrator named the XQ-139 developed under the University of Kansas Transportation Research Institute (KUTRI) between 2010 and 2014. The (then) institute director Dr. Robert Honea (now Edissey Chairman) funded research on revolutionary new technologies including new aircraft technologies. The platform design was originally conceived by Dr. Ron Barrett, a world renowned expert in aeronautical engineering and professor at KU. It did not take long to realize the applications are endless for a machine that offers all the advantages of both fixed wing and quadcopter drone technology.

Seeking further funding from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) the XQ-139 was entered as a competitor in the Experimental Vertical Takeoff and Landing effort (XVTOL). Despite offering capabilities proven on manned aircraft from the US Navy in the 1950s, the DARPA Tactical Technology Office program manager explained during the debrief: “The aircraft is too risky for DARPA and will probably never fly.” We were happy to prove DARPA wrong, and did so with first flight of the XQ-139 just a few months later. We proved the platform can take off and land vertically with ease, then pivot and fly horizontally, which we call "Missile Mode." Whether flying in a hover or in missile mode, it offers unmatched control using the motors differentially and control surfaces for high speeds allowing tight turns at any speed and orientation.

In 2014, seventeen unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) related invention disclosures were distilled into eight patent filings supporting inventions of the XQ-139 family of aircraft. Subsequently, the Edissey company was formed to commercialize these inventions through a license with the Kansas University Center for Technology Commercialization (KUCTC). During testing, the original XQ-139 prototype was nicknamed the QuadHawk or "QuadHWK" as a reference to the common perching hunter of the skies and a callback to the University of Kansas Jayhawks. The name QuadRKT, however, referenced the rocket-like elements of the fuselage design and eventually denoted the ability to carry a conventional rocket motor for even higher speeds.

Despite the expectations of DARPA, the aircraft not only flies, it exceeded our expectations for speed, agility, and versatility. Every day that we work with them and show them to new communities, we discover new capabilities. And finally, now that we have completed our own period of closed flight testing, we are now ready to put the QuadRKT variants in your hands to see what you can do with them. Together, we are uniquely poised to revolutionize the racing community and anything else that still relies on outdated notions of what quadrotors should look like.

    This airframe option is the lowest cost to entry variant of the QuadHawk. This base version assumes you have your own electronics you would like to test in our airframe. The depron foam will be precut and notched 1/4" thick sheets and are intended to be reinforced with (included) carbon fiber tubes and fiberglass patches. We’ll include detailed instructions on how to put the airframe together as well as necessary building materials (foam safe glue, aerosol accelerator, fiberglass reinforcement patches). You can then decide how you want to integrate your own electronics, and what color(s) to paint it. This variant can ship within 60 days of the end of the Kickstarter campaign.
