6/4/13: FUNDED! And THANK YOU!
A Stray in the Woods is an interactive webcomic adventure that ran between September of 2012 and May of 2013. The action was guided by my readers -- after every update, people could submit "commands" suggesting what Cat should do next, and I would choose one of them as the basis for the next post.
The entire story is available online, and you can read it start to finish if you haven't already! But as much as I'm happy with how A Stray in the Woods turned out as a webcomic, I'll admit I'm really excited to see it in print -- the story was always meant to be read as a whole, and the pacing works so well as physical pages, turned one by one to reveal each new Cat development.
At 250 full-color pages, A Stray in the Woods is a hefty book to be trying to self-publish. But just as my readers helped to guide Cat through this adventure, I'm hoping that you can help me make this collected volume a reality.
The tiers to the right are fairly straightforward, but here are some more details about the individual rewards!
NEW: Letterpress bookmarks! These were printed by Peter Kruty Editions right here in Brooklyn, and will be included with the silkscreen, sketch, and pet portrait tiers! If you're getting a silkscreen, you'll have a bookmark, too!
Handmade Print Gocco silkscreen prints! These three-color, two-screen prints are postcard sized and printed on card stock. You can see more photos of the printing process on Tumblr! (NOTE: Prints will also be included with ALL sketch edition and pet portrait tiers!)
The A Stray in the Woods paperback will be 250 color pages, perfect bound, 5" x 7.5" and will contain the entire run of the comic. All backer copies will be signed.
The PDF copy of the book will be DRM-free and identical to the print edition in terms of content.
The theme music -- which was composed especially for this Kickstarter by Paul Tuttle Starr -- will be available as a high bitrate mp3.
The exclusive postcard print will be of the graphic at the head of this Kickstarter. Only one run will ever be printed, and prints will only be available to backers.
A limited number of sketch editions will be available, in which I'll draw any two of the characters from A Stray in the Woods!
Up to ten backers can also have an original full-color drawing of their pet featured on the acknowledgements pages of both the print and PDF editions of the book. A high resolution digital copy of the artwork will also be sent to them once it's finished.
This project has already FAR exceeded all my expectations -- let's see what else we can manage together!
$3000 - Cover and interior paper stock upgraded -- MET!
$4000 - One 4x6 print of an A Stray in the Woods panel added to every backer tier. One glow-in the dark sticker added to every tier $10 and above! -- MET!
$5000 - Print Gocco tier added! I'll produce a limited number of hand-silkscreened postcard prints! -- MET!
$6000 - Five more acknowledgements page pet portrait slots added! -- MET!
$8000 - A Stray in the Woods sticker sheet added to all book tiers! -- MET!
$10,000 - Book production upgraded to full-color offset printing! -- MET!!!
And if we somehow manage to make it that far...WE'LL SEE!
Risks and challenges
The comic is finished, the book's interior has been laid out, I have a quote from a printer, I'm ready to go!
My challenges will be making final additions to the layouts, dealing with any unexpected hiccups in the printing process, and handling tasks like sketches in a timely manner. I plan to budget a big chunk of time to get all of these things accomplished as quickly as possible -- I'm serious about getting this book out the door by the fall.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
