Aldous Spark: Meddler in History and Other Unsavory Affairs is a graphic novel written and created by Peter Mirani and Andrew Maxwell, with art by Mauricio Alvarez, and the additional artistic talents of Derek Dow, Adam Pruett, Sonia Harris, and Justin Cornell. This is the first of four volumes, introducing our main characters and setting up the world.
Our story features Aldous Spark, famous illusionist by day, master spy and treasure hunter by night. Born with dwarfism, Aldous possesses a razor sharp wit and staggering intellect. He’s equal parts Harry Houdini and Nikola Tesla.
Together with his apprentice, Isaiah, Aldous travels the globe as an agent of the Black Moth Society -- an underground collective of anarchists waging a secret war against the institutions of power in an effort to undermine authority and empower the common man.
In book one Aldous and Isaiah are called to England under mysterious circumstances. There they find themselves embroiled in a forgotten mystery involving an ancient order, a forbidden text, and a ghastly murder. A cryptic journal once thought lost has mysteriously resurfaced -- a journal that holds dangerous secrets. It brings forth a murderous order from the shadows of Rome on a bloody mission to retrieve it.
Aldous - Entertainer, adventurer, and criminal mastermind. Aldous leverages his reputation as a world-famous magician to infiltrate the social circles of the well-to-do and subvert their agendas from within. As a card-carrying member of the Black Moth Society he confronts injustice wherever he sees it. But doing so might just get him killed...
Isaiah - Although he appears every bit a dandy and a cynic, Isaiah has been sheltered from many of the world’s hard truths. Upon the death of his adoptive parents he has become Aldous’s ward and apprentice. Gifted with the intellect of a genius, Isaiah may possess abilities of which even he is unaware...
Araceli - Heiress. Entrepreneur. Drug dealer. These are the roles Ariceli plays. And she plays them well. In her heart, however, she is Aldous’s peer among the mysterious agents of the Black Moth Society. Her network is extensive and her skills are many, but what distinguishes Ariceli is her gift of clairvoyance. To see the future, however, she must consume dangerous quantities of opium. Could her mystical gift also destroy her?
Marla - Sometimes friend, sometimes foe, Marla has plagued Aldous throughout his career with her searing insights and merciless insults. Unfortunately, the two of them have a history of wanting the same things. Although Marla is capable of stealing whatever she sets her mind to, her greed occasionally gets the better of her.
Red Priests - For centuries theologians have whispered about an ancient sect of religious zealots within the Vatican. Emotionless, silent, and unforgiving, the red priests do whatever is necessary to protect the interest of Rome. Rumors of their prowess in battle suggest almost supernatural abilities far beyond those of normal men. Exactly who or what they are is a mystery, however. One that remains to be solved…
Although Peter Miriani and Andrew Maxwell have been creating indie comics for a few years now, this is their first collaborative project. Peter has previously written for DC Comics, and Andrew released his first project Rum Row successfully via Kickstarter.

Aldous Spark will be printed in oversized 8 x 12.5" hardcover format, in the style of an European album. The book will be broken down as follows:
- 45 full color comic book pages covering our first story
- 10 pages making up Aldous’s personal journal. This is not "filler" back matter consisting of throwaway prose and character concept doodles. This will reflect our protagonists past and recent sorties, including - photographs, personal notes, files, and schematics. Careful readers will be able to pick up important clues for future volumes.
This special cover drawn by Mauricio Alvarez and designed by Sonia Harris, was modeled after the dime store novels of the time period, and will be a Kickstarter exclusive, never to be sold at conventions or otherwise.
International shipping is unfortunately extremely expensive. As much as we wanted to find another way, there wasn't any way around it. The books are available worldwide of course, but remember there is always the digital option. In the end, the most important thing to our team is that you read and enjoy the book. Also, I wanted to clarify, that shipping is not included in pledge amount.
U.S. Shipping: $10
International Shipping: $34
