Thanks to all of you, we have hit our funding goal in just over 2 days! We are so appreciative of everyone who has pledged. This will be a fairly long update to list our next steps, some additional goals, as well as address some questions and comments.
I have a meeting scheduled with our manufacturing vendor in NYC on Monday morning to go over all of the final details. We will also be providing them with a PO to start building the molds! Some of you might be saying right now 'but you don't receive the funds until the project is completed.' While this is true, thanks to all of you, I am confident that we will continue through the project funding phase and only go up from here. That is a risk that we are willing to take to get these into your hands sooner. Also, I will have most of the day free in the city. Feel free to send me a message if you'd like to meet up somewhere for coffee. I'll have one of our prototype units with me.
The tooling will take 30-35 days to complete. So we will be expecting an initial production run of approximately 100 units in our hands within a few weeks after funding is complete. Once we approve those, we'll be all set for the production run.
Some others have questioned our production schedule as too aggressive. We have been designing and engineering products for over 25 years for our clients so we know what it takes. One thing we have learned over the years is to make sure the engineering and design is complete and tested before even considering it ready to go. This involves several rounds of prototypes, testing, quoting, and all of the back and forth with the factory. This was all completed before we launched the Kickstarter project. Since seeing is believing, I have attached some intentionally un-doctored photos showing that our product is what we say it is. You can see the battery indicator charging while plugged in to the back port on our 27" iMac.
Questions and Comments
I thought we would address some of the frequent questions we have had in this update as well.
Cases and Bumpers: Because we use a connector that is nearly identical to the factory connector, Une Bobine should work with any case or bumper that your standard cable works with. The iPhone in the attached photos is in an Otterbox Commuter case. We will also test the Lifeproof case with the extension as soon as we can get our hands on one.
Landscape and Portrait: We originally hadn't considered landscape usage. Once we started getting the questions, we tried it and couldn't achieve proper holding. But it turns out that we just needed to coil the base differently. I've attached a photo showing a landscape position. It holds very well.
Android devices: We considered Android devices from day one. We do have design ideas, but there are several obstacles for Android devices. I have a Droid Incredible with a micro-usb on the side (my last phone before 4S) and it works very well on a device of this size and weight. But one of my employees has a Galaxy Nexus. These are much larger and heavier. And it seems like every new Android device is getting larger and larger. The much smaller micro and mini USB connectors cause some concerns for breakage when trying to carry the full weight of a phone this large. We are in the process of testing designs to address this. But they will not be as sleek as our current design because we feel it is best to take the weight off the connector and put it on the connector housing. We would much rather wait to offer a product that we would feel comfortable using ourselves than rush something out that might damage your phone.
Expect over the next few days to see some additional specific funding goals with new rewards. To get you excited, here are some items that we have already been working on for engineering and testing. We should be deciding in the next few weeks what order we will be adding these items in along with the funding we will need to hit to add them. If you have any thoughts on what you would like to see, let us know by commenting on this update.
- Additional length cables.
- Additional cable connectors such as micro/mini USB, LED lights, Female USB, and more.
- Attachment clips.
- Multi-port aluminum dock to use with Une Bobine and additional cables.
It should be an exciting month! As always, we'll reply to every comment and message received as soon as possible. You can also stay updated or send a message on twitter @jefawcett.
