GALLANT KNIGHT GAMES with WUNDERWERKS is proud to present:
Once Upon a Time in Jianghu by Tobie Abad.
Once Upon a Time in Jianghu is a wuxia-inspired roleplaying game that is Powered by the Apocalypse. It is a heroic and tragic game of Honorable Heroes standing against the tyrannical corrupted emperor. Players create their characters from a mix of five key Archetypes: Artisan, Doctor, Priest, Scholar, and Warrior, which defines their Traits and personality. The game is a narrative-facing system and forgoes character stats and health levels, replacing them instead with narrative controls to define which encounters cause Trauma or Scar the personalities involved. For instance, a punch can leave a broken nose...or instill a greater sense of respect for one's opponent's strength.
The game is set in a mythic Asia called, "Sihai," which is both literally and metaphorically called the Center of the World by its current ruling despot, the Golden Emperor. The game system allows the telling of wuxia, xianxia, and even xuanhuan stories, with over fifteen regional options to choose from, and at least sixteen different factions.
Will your Heroes find themselves allying with the 12 Zodiac Ministers? Or will they search for a way to unite the broken world against a rising hidden evil? What stories will you tell?
This game is brought to you by a partnership between WUNDERWERKS and GALLANT KNIGHT GAMES. Once Upon a Time in Jianghu features Tobie Abad alongside top tier industry talent such as Elizabeth Chaipraditkul, Sen-Foong Lim, Rob Abrazado, and much more! Once Upon a Time in Jianghu is an exciting new step forward for all three game companies as we work closer together to share the burden of game design, publishing, and production. Tobie Abad has written, developed and designed the world and mechanics, Wunderwerks is running the Kickstarter, and Gallant Knight Games is managing, producing, and distributing the project.
The game is Powered by the Apocalypse, using the framework of D. Vincent Baker and Meguey Baker's groundbreaking system, and expands on it with the addition of Auspicious results. Rather than dictate the success or failure of an action, the dice are used to determine what narrative options the player has access to. Do they fail, and yet accomplish some other minor victory as destiny conspires to help your hero? Do they succeed in ways beyond what they expected?
Players determine, with the help of the Grandmaster, which Traits apply as bonuses or penalties to one's roll. All rolls require only two six-sided dice.
A roll of
12+ is an Auspicious Result: You get the result you want and more. This may mean the action itself fails, but the intention of the action succeeds more than expected.
10-11 is a Successful Result: You get the result you desired.
7-9 is a Fated Result: The action may succeed in its desired effect, but at a cost that the GM determines. Or the action fails, but the Hero is compensated to some degree.
6 or lower is a Baleful Result: The action fails to accomplish its desired effect. There is no compensation. The Hero likely will suffer in some way. Or the action still succeeds, but destiny conspires to complicate things much more for the Hero in a greater way than usual.
When the bonuses go beyond +3/-3, each additional multiple of three grants an additional effect upon the result. These can range from dealing extra injuries, buying others time, and other narrative conceits.
In Once Upon a Time in Jianghu, heroism comes in many forms. To capture the feel of the genre and make it easier to access in the game, the different options for heroes is distilled into five key archetypes.
The Artisan is a figure of beauty and performance. While most focus on martial prowess or intellectual pursuits, the Artisan embraces lore about how art can move people and how people relate with each other.
Examples include Mei (Zhang Ziyi) from House of Flying Daggers, the villainous musicians from Kung Fu Hustle, and Zhen Ji's use of a flute as a main weapon in Dynasty Warriors.
The doctor understands the secret ways to cure (and corrupt) the body. Through the use of pressure points, needles, and other tools, a doctor can create wondrous works.
Examples include Master Li Mu Bai (Chow Yun-fat) from Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon use of acupuncture to slow the poison in his system and Haku from Naruto using needles to great effect.
The priest is the shaman or the spirit talker. The priest handles matters of karma and purity, and plays larger roles in Xianxia stories.
Examples include Kwai Chang Caine (David Carradine) a Shaolin Monk in the TV series Kung Fu and Aobozu, from the video game Onmiyoji.
The scholar is the intellectual master, knowing things common people do not - be it secrets of alchemy or the lore of hidden ways.
Examples include Fullmetal Alchemist's Major Alex Louis Armstrong, as well as detective Xu Baijiu (Takeshi Kaneshiro) from Dragon.
The warrior is dedicated to mastering the art of battle and the intricate ways of their chosen weapon.
Examples include Hsiao Shao-Tzu (Shih Chun) from Dragon Inn, Linghu Chong (Jet Li) from Swordsman II, and Yu Shu Lien (Michelle Yeoh) from Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.
However, in Once Upon a Time in Jianghu, players do not have to simply choose one of the five archetypes. They create characters who embody different facets that they prefer. This allows players to customize and personalize their character concepts in countless ways.
For example, in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Li Mu Bai has Doctor Traits and Warrior Traits. In contrast, Yu Shu Lien has Artisan and Warrior Traits.
The game is written, the editing is finished, the first wave of art is done and our layout designer is standing by! This game is ready to go. We just need your help to get the word out about it, and help make sure everyone gets paid! The stretch goals and the second wave of art are pending, so we'll be a few months out from delivery, but it will go smoothly and quickly.
This is a fast campaign to help recoup some of the expenses incurred in making the game. We'll deliver the game as fast as we can based on stretch goals and other such unlocks!
The goal is to make this as streamlined as possible for the team, so we're putting fulfillment duties into the capable hands of DriveThruRPG.
When the book is ready to be released, backers will receive an at-cost code to print their books on DriveThruRPG.
They can order the codes they pledge for and get them shipped directly to them. Please keep in mind: backers will still need to pay for shipping costs and the at-cost price of the book.
Printing costs are estimated at around (or under) $8 USD for the softcover, and around (or under) $12-14 USD for the hardcover.
We've hosted our products on DriveThruRPG for years now, and have only ever received excellent service and support. We're confident they can help us deliver a beautiful book to all our backers on time.

Gallant Knight Games is an indie game company run by Alan and Erin Bahr. This is our 16th GKG Kickstarter!
Our previous Kickstarters (Tiny Frontiers and Tiny Frontiers: Mecha & Monsters) delivered early to backers (4 months in the case of Tiny Frontiers), and a majority of our projects, including our flagship Tiny Dungeon 2e have delivered on time! While we've hit some hurdles on a few projects, we've always delivered as much value as we can!
WunderWerks is an indie game company run by Ben Woerner. This is my third Kickstarter I've personally run, but I've been involved with loads of other successful games. I'm running this Kickstarter for Tobie while he continues to write and create awesome things.
Risks and challenges
Q: Can Gallant Knight Games, and WunderWerks handle this project?
Gallant Knight Games' has successfully delivered many Kickstarter projects, and we learned a lot from all of them. We've been early or on time every time, but once (due to a death.) We have two projects that are not out to backers yet, but one is currently printing and preparing for fulfillment, and the other is exactly on track and this project will not impact that one. This is a straightforward project with no nuances.
Tobie's work is mostly done besides some possible Stretch Goal writing, and WunderWerks is only running the Kickstarter.
Wunderwerks has delivered on their first Kickstarter, and the second is done and off to production. Our role is facilitating the Kickstarter for Tobie Abad and GKG.
Q: What if the text or art isn't finished?
A: The game is already laid out, and proofread! We just need to generate the funds to cover the cost of the game and putting it into backers hands!
Q: What if the complexity of the project overwhelms GKG?
A: We deliberately built this project to avoid being complex.
Q: What about delays in art?
A: All the art is in!
Q: Increase in shipping costs?
A: DriveThruRPG operates all over the world, and we're confident they'll get our backers the best shipping cost!
Q: What if something happens to the principals?
A: All that will have to happen is loading the game into DriveThruRPG, and we've got a back up plan for that!
