WHY THIS FILM NEEDS TO BE MADE:

MOVING PARTS is one of a handful of new feature films being produced within the Caribbean, poised to present new images and stories to the international market.

MOVING PARTS is unique in that it is not a thriller, but rather a human drama, exposed from the inside out. Utilising a local context, this film will address one of the most pressing contemporary global social issues, human trafficking. The film will present a fresh approach to a difficult topic through the eyes of female characters, crafted by a female writer/director, shot by a female cinematographer and produced by Caribbean women.

FUNDING:

Film TT (Trinidad and Tobago Film Commission) has awarded MOVING PARTS a prestigious production grant. This gives us an enormous push towards producing the film. In addition, we have garnered financial support from the T&T Counter Trafficking Unit/Ministry of National Security, the T&T National Lotteries Control Board and in-kind support from blink bmobile.

We have a completed script, have cast the film, identified the locations, reached out to crew and begun working with the Production Designer and Cinematographer on the look and feel of the movie. The money we raise during this campaign will go toward specific production costs:

Production design [35%] Grip and lighting [30%] Hair, Make-up and wardrobe [15%] Translations [20%]

So far we have raised 2/3 of the production budget. But we need to dress the set, outfit the actors, light the scenes, translate parts of the script. That’s why we’re asking for your help to raise $25,000US here on Kickstarter.

SYNOPSIS:

After the death of her father, a Chinese immigrant, Zhenzhen, is smuggled into Port of Spain in order to be with her brother Wei. Unbeknownst to them, the restaurant where Wei has found her work serves more than just food. Zhenzhen arranges for an advance from the restaurant’s owner, Mrs. Liu, in order to pay the money she owes as a result of her illegal entry onto the island, and Mrs. Liu’s narcissistic son, Shin, takes a unwanted interest in Zhenzhen’s future. When a devastating event tears at the very fabric of Zhenzhen’s existence, only through the help of a neighboring art gallerist, Evelyn, and the restaurant's Cook, does she have a chance at life.

Our distribution plan is to premiere at an A-list festival, secure an international sales agent and sell the vod, online, broadcast rights to European, Canadian, Latin American and US territories. The director will maintain the Caribbean rights and plans to release the film theatrically there. Additionally, the producing team will work with the sales agent towards a small theatrical release in the US and will also utilize Tugg as a means to show the film in theatres.

REWARDS:

ALL contributions to this campaign will go directly to the production in Trinidad and Tobago. With your support we can film MOVING PARTS this Spring!

To make a contribution, choose one of the REWARDS on the right-hand column of this page (also listed below), or click the "Back This Project" button at the top right. You can contribute any amount of money, even $1. The campaign lasts until March 16th. Since Kickstarter is an "all-or-nothing" platform, we must make our goal by that day, or else we will not have access to the funds pledged. When we meet or exceed our goal, we will get all of the funding, and will be able to make our film.

If you are unable to contribute money but still want to support MOVING PARTS, sharing this Kickstarter campaign with your friends and colleagues will assist us in reaching our goal.

Risks and challenges

A unique challenge we have encountered in producing this film, is that although the story is entirely fictional, the film addresses big business in the region, and includes all ethnicities of trafficked and traffickers, not just Chinese. We are working to overcome this misconception by engaging members of the Chinese Trinidadian community both on our team, in the cast and in our outreach, as well as through working with non-profit agencies, to further create awareness about human smuggling and trafficking in the Caribbean.

Additionally, the timing for the film is sensitive, as there are limited equipment and crew resources in Trinidad such that only one film can be in production at any given time. We are in communication regularly with other local producers to ensure we don't overlap our dates.
