The baseball cap. One of the most iconic fashion accessories of the last 50 years. It transcends culture, interests and trends since it was adopted as a fashionable item of clothing away from the sports field.
Introducing Capify. A baseball cap reinvented. Social, connected and built for sharing.
A cap is much more than a functional thing you wear on your head. It is an extension of you and your personality. Now you can take this expression to the next level with a Capify Cap.
Just tap your phone against the hat and you are connected. And its not just for you, your friends can also tap discover your story quickly and easily. Your cap can connect a mobile phone to your social profiles, websites or portfolios, or even your favourite sports team.
Our caps are made from the finest quality material, and by the best manufacturers in the world. We understand that people are really passionate and particular about their caps so we plan to have a range of designs and styles to match anyone's taste.
Right now we have built our tech into two styles, either a "Fitted" cap or an "Snapback" cap. These two styles are available in either a plain colour option with no logos of branding on them, or you can choose to customise a hat with whatever design you like, you just send us the artwork.
We integrate our tech into the lining of the hat and add a little logo so your friends know its a Capify Cap.
We also customise existing hats that you may own. We integrate our NFC tech into your hat lining so it is seamless and hidden.
Finally we are happy to integrate our tech into any major hat manufacturer hat that you may prefer. So if you want your favourite team's hat from New Era or Truckfit or Starter we will add our tech to the hat and then mail the hat to you in the post.
We make it really easy to set up your SmartCap to link to whatever content you want to. Some people recommend using apps to control NFC functions but we think that is way too confusing.
Our system is so simple. It lets you control what content your hat connects to via the cloud, on a browser on your phone or tablet or PC. If you can connect to the internet you can control your hat.
Your hat comes ready coded and setup, you just need to tap it once to view our site, sign in using facebook / twitter / whatever you want:
Then choose what URL you want your content to link to. le and no coding required.
Hit save and the link is saved. No hassle and no confusing apps to download. The hat updates dynamically to the link you have selected.
You can set your hat up to access any digital touchpoint that you like. Your cap becomes more than a fashion accessory, it becomes a virtual extension of you and your personality.
If you are a photographer or artist you have a new and memorable way of introducing people to your content with a simple tap of their phone.
If you are a musician you can spread the word about your new the song you made yourself or are just loving right now. Seeing the cap working first hand is incredible and unforgettable.
Sports fans alert! If you want to link to the team that you love go right ahead, get a live feed of your team's scores, or even better use your hat at your team's stadium to pay for refreshments or souvenirs.
Any one of these ideas can be easily set up by you for your cap:
Best of all, no coding or dev experienced required. Access your profile online, type in a URL, hit save and your hat works.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
We use NFC to make the magic happen. NFC stands for Near Field Communications which is a set of short-range wireless technologies that enable devices to communicate with each other; a little bit like Bluetooth.
When you expose an NFC enabled object to a more powerful RF field from a mobile device, its own field is strengthened and information can be exchanged between the object and the mobile. Its pretty cool and its going to be the biggest tech innovation for mobile phones over the next 6-12 months.
First we talked, then we typed and soon we will tap as a way for people to share and connect with their each on their mobile phones.
Right now the idea, the prototype creation and the risk is mine and we have a patent pending. Full time its only me and my friends but we have a network of creatives, developers, designers and blue sky thinkers that will put any company to shame pulling together to make this project a reality, but I cant pay them to work fulltime on this project.... yet.
Me? I am originally from sunny South Africa, now residing in London. I have worked in technology and digital for 10 years. A hat and cap fanatic, combined with a fascination with mobile tech = CAPIFY.
We have 5 working prototypes of the Capify Cap that are sitting at Capify HQ in Old Street, London Tech City. These protypes work a treat, are weather and waterproof and hold up well to the rigors of daily wear.
Our web based cap control system is up and running but needs a little design and development polish to make it run like the well oiled machine it should be.
In other words we have basic working models of everything you have seen in our video and read in our story. But to really make this product take a step to the next level we need some help from your good selves.
Designing and then building this cap, sourcing materials and setting up a supply chain is surprisingly time consuming and expensive! Alot of suppliers wont work for free on this project like me because they think its “cool” either.

Well so far, it sounds awesome! Whats the catch?
NOT ALL PHONES ARE COMPATIBLE
While the tech and the hat all work as they should there is a slight snag. You need to have an NFC enabled phone in order to interact with the Tapify SmartCap. And before you pipe up in the back iPhone, the answer is no, you are not NFC enabled :(
Repeat - iPhone is not NFC enabled (yet) so if you only packing an iPhone you cant interact with a Tapify Smartcap on your phone, but your friends with compatible phones can so dont despair!
All is not lost! Some of the most popular smartphones on the market are NFC enabled including:
- Google Nexus
- Nokia Lumia
- Galaxy S2 and Galaxy S3
And a ton more. You can see a list if you google "NFC enabled phones". Most estimates put penetration of NFC into smartphones at 80% over the next 3 years so the tech is going to be around for the long haul.
THATS ABOUT IT
There are no other challenges or risks to this idea. We have the caps, we have the technology, we will be building the website for you to manage your caps. All we need is back from you guys, and an idea will have travelled from a brain, into a website and then onto a person's favourite fashion accessory.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
