Update Video! Watch Minor Arcana Press's Associate Editor Anne Bean as she shows off the beta version of the cards and demonstrates the "Odalisque!"
What is Shufflepoems?
The debut poetry collection from performance poet Lydia Swartz, Shufflepoems is a book of poetry, but it's also a deck of cards. The 100-card deck comprises four suits, each an individual poem that can be shuffled and randomized for a new reading experience every time. Adventurous readers can shuffle several poems together to create a thrilling new body of art. In addition to an innovative and striking new way to present poetry, Shufflepoems can be used as a series of inspirational prompts for writers, musicians, and other artists. Card readers and fortune tellers can also employ the deck for intuitive readings. Watch a clip of Lydia reading from the deck here.
Who is Lydia Swartz?
Lydia Swartz is a fiction author, a poet, a spoken-word performance artist, and an all-around juicy provocateur. Lydia is a staple of the Seattle artistic community, yet no one has published her genius manuscripts to date. Minor Arcana Press is about to change that.
Who is Minor Arcana Press?
Fabulous misfits. Artistic weirdoes. We're a Seattle-based independent publishing house, specializing in risk-taking writers who've had difficulty finding a home with other publishers, such as Morris Stegosaurus and Natasha Marin. We also love to publish ekphrastic anthologies, such as Drawn to Marvel: Poems from the Comic Books, the world's first anthology of superhero poetry. Lydia is a perfect fit for us.
What do I get for backing this project?
Some very nifty swag. All backers at $10 and above will receive Shufflepoems (either as a pdf or physical deck + pdf) if they choose these rewards. Canadian backers should select the Canadian shipping options at the $25 and $50 levels. As backing levels increase, rewards include individualized, made-to-order poetry and fiction, inclusion of your writing or artwork in future Minor Arcana Press publications, editing consultations with a MAP author, and VIP table service at the Shufflepoems release party. Plus, you get to be directly involved in the practical support of an emerging, innovative author and a daring publishing house. Read a complete list of rewards in the menu to the right of the screen.
As an extra incentive, we'll bump-up each day's highest backer to the next level [a day ends at midnight Pacific Standard Time, and there must be a single highest backer--no ties].
As an extra extra incentive, we'll add a fifth Shufflepoem to the pdf file, available to all backers at the $10 and up levels, upon reaching the minimum goal.
NEW NEW NEW! No matter how much $ we receive past our goal, if we reach 78 backers (one for each card in the Tarot) we will create an original book trailer, more narrative and creative than the Kickstarter videos we produced. We would like to hire a local Seattle videographer and a local burlesque performer to part of the growing Shufflepoems multimedia project!
New! At $3250, we will add a special pdf of "spreads" that will instruct you how to use the card deck as an oracle, much like the Tarot, but with a cheeky twist. Available to all backers!
New! At $3,500, we will add to the pdf file two sets of rules for turning Shufflepoems into a card game! Gamers will be able to share the deck with friends for group gaming nights! Available to all backers!
Once we reach $4000, we'll create quality, custom bags especially for this card deck, given to all contributors who receive the physical deck (pledges of $25 and up).
At $5,000, all contributors will receive a pdf of a SIXTH Shufflepoem that Lydia creates.
When we double our goal and rack up $6000, Shufflepoems becomes an app for your mobile device, available to ALL backers with compatible devices.
We'll continue to reveal more and more stretch goals as the pledged amount grows.
Why should I support this project?
In addition to the succulent and unusual rewards, you are empowering artistic and cultural innovation by fostering a rich and stable platform for writers to promote their work to an international audience. Minor Arcana Press has recognized the invigorating and inspiring contributions that Lydia Swartz makes to the literary community, and we want to spread the word about her, intergalactically if possible.
Some other likely questions from our fans and supporters:
I've heard of this Kickstarter thingy, but how does it actually work?
A brief overview (official version here): for the next three weeks, you're able to support the printing of Lydia Swartz's groundbreaking poetry card deck, Shufflepoems. You can pledge any amount from $1 to whatever you're able to afford. For your pledge, you can select rewards (listed on the sidebar to the right) of corresponding value to your pledge. Many people use Kickstarter as a fun way to pre-order items while potentially raising the quality of the items and getting extras.
Once you pledge, your account will not be charged until the project deadline is met and successfully funded. When the deadline comes and the goal has been reached, we get busy printing these cards and creating the extra prizes and rewards. If Fate and the Muses decide that the goal isn't reached by the deadline, you are not charged—no fees, nothing. Simple as that. No risk to contributors, only self-determined pledge amounts and rewards, rewards, rewards!
For rewards that require shipping outside the US, Minor Arcana Press will require an extra shipping fee. Shipping inside the US is free (including Alaska and Hawai'i). Our digital rewards, including original writing made to individual order, require no shipping fees.
What happens if I move before you ship my rewards?
No worries! Kickstarter doesn't send us your mailing address automatically; we send out a Kickstarter survey via email in which you provide your mailing address. Keep your email up-to-date on Kickstarter for that correspondence. We will send the survey out just before shipping the physical decks (scheduled for November 2014). Many prizes are digital, so make sure the email you provide is valid.
Risks and challenges
This is the first time we are running a Kickstarter campaign on our own account, but rest assured we have combined experience under our belt from previous campaigns. After all, this isn't just some potato salad we're throwing together.
This isn't our first time at the rodeo. The Minor Arcana Press tribe has partnered with Babel Salvage Press and Gay City Health Project on successful Kickstarter book projects before (The Midnight Channel and Ghosts in Gaslight, Monsters in Steam, respectively), so you can be confident that we'll deliver on our promises. We are closely advised by our marketing consultant, author and performance artist Natasha Marin of the Midnight Tea series (another successfully funded Kickstarter project).
Our highest priority is to provide you with the innovative, funky rewards you've paid for with your pledges. The biggest risk is that delivery could take a bit longer than expected, especially if we feel the need to spend some additional time creating the highest quality products (the stretch goal app, the fifth poemsuit, etc.).
For those pledging at levels that earn the VIP table at the Seattle launch party, we understand concerns about the date and venue being unset. Rest assured that the launch party is a guaranteed event, scheduled for late October or early November. The more we earn on this Kickstarter, the better the venue and VIP treatment we can provide.
We are very responsive to questions, so feel free to contact us with any concerns.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
