About this project
"For the first time in my career, I have the opportunity to breathe life into a restaurant that is not chasing trends, but a restaurant that has no choice other than to represent a Place and Time by producing food representative of its past, present, and future." - Kevin Sousa
The Case for Superior Motors
Superior Motors will serve fresh, local and thoughtfully crafted food in a true urban food desert. In fact, Braddock does not have a restaurant functioning within its borders; fast food or otherwise.
Superior Motors will be accessible and participatory. Fresh, local and honestly prepared food cannot be exclusionary. We will offer a substantial resident discount. Our core principle: the ability of a resident to partake in Superior Motors will never be a factor of household income.
Superior Motors will truly embrace "farm to table" and "local", with abundant access to fresh, organic produce from a two-acre urban farm one block away, a 1000 sq. ft. rooftop greenhouse as well as 4000 sq. ft. of additional roof space to accommodate a raised bed garden.
Superior Motors will provide professional culinary training and opportunities at no cost to local residents. In fact, a big part of Superior Motors mission is paying this forward for the young people in the community.
Superior Motors is part of an established, community-based ‘ecosystem’ that combines food, farming, art, history, industry, training and lodging.
Superior Motors will never, ever pay a dime in rent for the space and we got it in writing: We just signed a long-term, no-cost lease.
Superior Motors is next to a giant steel mill.
Superior Motors is next to an award winning small-scale apiary that provides honey as well as beekeeping training to Braddock's youth. Additionally, all of our eggs will come from local, Braddock hens.
Superior Motors is next to an alternative art gallery and performance venue housed in a formerly abandoned school which hosts new artists, studios, shows and openings every month.
Superior Motors is next to a hostel in a formerly abandoned convent that will provide no-cost housing for culinary and service interns and externs from all over the country.
Superior Motors is located in one of the first indoor car dealerships (built in 1921) in the country - Superior Motors - from which it derives its name. The restaurant itself has a footprint of approximately 3,000 square feet. It is appropriately zoned, with three-phase electrical power, and all other utilities.
Superior Motors will never exist without your support. We know from the many events that Kevin and Braddock Mayor John Fetterman have hosted in the community that Chef Sousa's patrons will follow him to Braddock. Historically, we also know that the banks will not.
We are grateful for this opportunity to share our project with you, thank you for your time and consideration.

Risks and challenges
Why such an ambitious restaurant in such a challenged community?
Without a doubt, the largest challenge that we face is opening a for-profit restaurant within a community that is well outside the traditional market-driven dynamics.
This is also why crowdsourcing through Kickstarter is realistically the only chance we have to bring this project to life.
In other words:
IT'S ALL UP TO YOU
Therefore, if we are going to ask you to part with your hard-earned cash, it is incumbent upon us to be good stewards of these funds and minimize your risk as a supporter.
Moreover, there are many significant assets and unique circumstances that make Superior Motors feasible and sustainable:
- Superior Motors will be one part of a much larger, established 'ecosystem' of significant cultural and community elements including an award-winning apiary and an alternative art gallery and performance venue
- Enjoys strong and broad community support
- Rent-free space for Superior Motors restaurant
- Free room and board for culinary/service interns and volunteers
- Dramatic backdrop of the Edgar Thomson Steel Works
- James Beard Nominated Chef Sousa's years of experience which include opening four successful concepts
- An established network of talented, passionate restaurant professionals who are extremely excited to be a part of this project
- Free ample parking for patrons
- Shared utilities
- Significantly reduced insurance rates
- Cost-free greenhouse and 4000 sq. ft. rooftop raised bed garden
- Low-cost access to produce in peak season from Braddock Farms as well as the invaluable asset of having a highly efficient, functioning organic farm as part of our job training program.
100% of funds raised will go directly into creating this restaurant. No one is being paid a commission or a salary.
Through Kickstarter, YOU DECIDE, not the banks, and that is exactly how we want it.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
