About this project
The Many Worlds of Mr. Diddlewit is a middle-grade novel series starting with Book One: The Whittakers. Mr. Diddlewit, a friendly old hermit, encourages children to learn and grow by giving them keys to fantastic worlds. In Book One, Beatrice and William, along with their witty dog Poof, meet new friends, play games, and ride a Bumble-O in a world in the clouds; they attempt to rescue The Forest from drought in a land of moving, talking plants; they visit a coastal village and go chummyfishing with a hearty crew of sailors; they take a tour of an underwater realm, meet the squiddy mayor, and encounter a terrible sea monster; and they launch a search and rescue mission into the sweltering, lava-filled Magmite.
The Many Worlds of Mr. Diddlewit is an adventure series that will keep readers turning the pages. But more than this, it is also an opportunity to teach children valuable life-lessons about integrity, generosity and respect. As narrator, Ollie Staples makes reference to the choices our young adventurers make. From experience, Ollie has seen that middle grade readers -- 8 to 12 or so -- are still receptive to a little adult input (given with care), and they won't begrudge a narrator offering some advice as they grow up to have adventures of their own. Along these lines, as much as Ollie believes in the curious and reasonable nature of children, he also believes in the accountability of authors. The Many Worlds of Mr. Diddlewit is a series he hopes parents will want their kids to read, not just for entertainment, but because their child's life will be enriched.
Through Kickstarter, we are hoping to raise $5000 in order to print 1000 copies of the book. Some of these we will circulate locally, in cooperation with local book stores who have already expressed interest in promoting the book. We also plan on donating a classroom set to a local elementary school, the part of this project that is dearest to our hearts. Working with teachers, counselors and administration, we hope to build a curriculum with two goals in mind: meeting state and federal literacy standards while increasing the focus on government-recommended life-skills material. Research has shown students with better social skills do better academically, so there is a growing emphasis on promoting personal growth as well as reading skills. We believe The Many Worlds of Mr. Diddlewit is one of few books that can meet both of these goals.
So thanks for checking us out. We believe this is a project parents, and friends of parents, can really get behind. Your support is much appreciated.
And happy adventuring!
