UPDATE: I woke up this morning to some amazing news… REMIX YOUR REALITY HAS BEEN FULLY FUNDED!!! Thank you so much to Ketan Patel for coming through with the final push across the finish line, and a huge thanks to all of the backers who helped make this dream a reality!
For every $300 beyond the funding goal, we'll be able to add another song to the album and increase the impact on students around the world. Thank you so much for continuing to support the project and spread the word in the final week.
We'll be posting some photos, behind-the-scenes videos (including some great improvised duets with Joe "Focus" Martinez), and other exclusive content for backers, so thank you for being Remixers on this journey with us. We're excited to get started and share some amazing music, motivation, and inspiration with you!
We know from our own experiences that students learn best when they are actively participating and engaged in their education, or even better, when they don’t realize they’re learning at all. That's where this hip-hop motivational album comes in!
I have been working to empower students around the world through rap, beatboxing, poetry, and motivational speaking for nearly fifteen years. During that time I also completed a doctorate in hip-hop and global youth cultures, was a music producer and manager, and served as chief program officer for a youth-serving non-profit. After consistently seeing the impact that hip-hop education and motivational speaking have on students, I finally decided last year to pursue motivational speaking and hip-hop education full-time.
Over the years I have written and produced five albums, and I feel like it's time to do my first motivational hip-hop album that will empower teens (and hopefully older people too) through blazing beats and dope (but clean) lyrics. The executive production team for this project consists the vice president of my company, Ivy LaClair, and myself.
Traditionally when producing an album, I write all the lyrics and beats, and then mix and master the songs myself. This album production process will be a bit different since I am now spending a lot of time in front of awesome youth audiences! I will still do all the lyric writing, rap performance, and recording, but most of the beats and mixing services will need to be purchased.
At this point in the project timeline, most of the conceptual work for the album is complete (including the themes of the songs), and several beats have been chosen. Just to give you a sneak-peak, here are a few of the motivational topics I'll write about (these are topics, not song titles):
- Remix Your Reality - Your perceptions dictate your ability to build the life you want.
- Story - We are in control of what things mean to us.
- Just Opportunities - Every "problem" can be perceived as an opportunity.
- Failure – We can change our perspective that "failure is bad" to "failure is part of the process."
- Suffering - Bad things in our lives have actually prepared us for success
- Success – We define success for ourselves.
- Overwhelm – We can adjust our expectations of what we should or should not be able to do right now and focus on one step at a time.
- Underappreciated and Misunderstood - Everyone is going through a struggle we know nothing about.
- Boredom is a choice - You can get something out of every situation or moment.
- Self-awareness – You only truly have control over yourself and your perceptions (not others’ actions or other circumstances).
From here, the plan is to finish writing, commission beats, and record! We will be bringing in Joe "Focus" Martinez (featured on a number of my albums) to do sung vocals and a photo shoot for the album cover. After all of the recording is done, we will hire a talented engineer to do the final mixing and mastering.
Then we will have a brand new album that will motivate and uplift you, your kids, your students, or any other young person in your life!
Thank you so much for your support!
Risks and challenges
We are planning on finishing up the album this summer and shipping out CD's during the month of July. During that time we will also launch a major campaign for 2015-2016 speaking engagements. Hopefully this will result in increased incoming call volume from people who want to hear Blake speak and rap for kids! Since our team is small this has the potential to shift some of our attention from album production; however, we will do whatever it takes to get this album done this summer!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
