About this project
Do you remember stepping on bugs as a child?
Have you ever lit one on fire with a magnifying glass?
What if all those bugs could come back from the dead?
“Don’t Let the Dead Bugs Bite!” is a family-friendly tale about two boys who enjoy killing bugs for fun. They get more than they bargained for, though, when their victims come back from the dead. Will the boys be able to stop the mischievous bugs before it’s too late? Find out in the new children’s book “Don’t Let the Dead Bugs Bite!” Written and illustrated by Stephen Zmina.
“Don’t Let the Dead Bugs Bite!” is a picture book for children ages 4-10. The funds that we are raising will be used to pay for the first printing of the book. We plan to make the book available for purchase on Amazon.com, aakp.com, and dontletthedeadbugsbite.com.
With bookstores closing, it has become harder for smaller publishers to get their books into the hands of the consumer. This is why we need your help. We hope you think of this not as a donation, but rather as a pre-purchase of the book.
We estimate that $8,000 is the minimum amount of money we need to raise for the initial printing. Of course, if we are able to raise more than the initial $8,000 we will use the money for a larger print run, and some marketing, with hopes of the book eventually hitting the shelves of Barnes and Noble, Target and Walmart.
Thank you for your support. With your help, we will be able to publish a memorable and thought provoking story for children. After reading it, they may even think twice before stepping on that next bug!

About the author:
Hi, my name is Stephen Zmina, but most people call me Steve.
I grew up in a suburb of Chicago called Wheaton, Illinois. As a child, my friends and I would collect and torture the various bugs that would wander through my back yard. We would squash them, collect them, burn them and so on.
The poor bugs never stood a chance. I really enjoyed destroying them as a child, but as I grew older I started to regret it. I think that's how most people feel. Or maybe not. But what if bugs really do have feelings? What if they could sense that we were about to kill them? Hmmm....
I've always been a fan of scary movies. My dad took me to see Ghostbusters at the theater when I was 5. When Sigourney Weaver opened up the refrigerator I can remember begging my dad to leave. He spent a couple minutes in the back of the theater aisle convincing me to stay. And I'm glad I did. The enjoyment I found in that movie has stayed with me until this very day.
As a child, I always enjoyed drawing. My pencil and I became pretty inseparable. I imagined that one day I would work for Disney and spent every day recreating Disney characters. In 1996 I graduated high school and enrolled in the illustration program at San Jose State University.
It was here that I became one of the “Shrunkenheadman” and in 2001 I received the Society of Illustrator’s Norman Rockwell Museum at Stockbridge award. After graduating from college, part of me still wanted to work for Disney, but the other part of me wanted to create stories all my own.
I came up with the idea for "Don’t Let the Dead Bugs Bite" in 2004. I was playing around with the idea of a group of ‘superhero’ bugs and needed an adversary for them. The idea was originally for the superhero bugs to face off against a bad group of bugs that had died and come back from the dead. This quickly morphed into an origin story of how the bugs died and wanted revenge on the children that had squashed them. And with that, "Don’t Let the Dead Bugs Bite!" was born.
I recalled my childhood and my love of scary movies and decided I wanted to write a scary, but not too scary, book for children. Dr. Seuss was also a large influence of mine. I have always admired his writing style and wanted to emulate that style in my own writing.
I have high hopes for "Don't Let the Dead Bugs Bite!" I think this children's book is just the beginning. I have also written a full length screenplay and one day... one day I hope to sit back in and watch "Don't Let the Dead Bugs Bite!" on the big screen.
I can't wait for everyone to read "Don't Let the Dead Bugs Bite!" I'm very happy with the way it turned out and I'm sure your family will enjoy it.
