It's a box!
You know those jokes parents make on birthdays, when you open a box, and find another box inside? IT'S A BOX. Well, that is also what this Kickstarter is for.
Now that my four book series, the Raven Cycle, is complete, I wanted to give back to the readers who'd been asking me for a pretty way to display them. There may yet be a Scholastic paperback box set at some point (I'm out of the loop there), but I wanted to offer something for the folks who have already supported the entire series in hardcover. Something that wouldn't make them have to repurchase the entire series again just for a pretty box.
So! It's a box!
In my previous life, before I was a full-time author, I was a full-time portrait artist, and so I collected my pencils and reached out to Jakprints to price out a sturdy, full color slipcase. The final slipcase — that's a fancy word for BOX — will be printed lushly on 0.06 board with the art I've just completed. It will fit the four U.S. hardcovers of the series. It will be limited edition: the project will be to have 4,000 of them printed, with no reprints planned in the future.
REMINDER, AGAIN: the books do NOT come with the box.
IT'S A BOX.
Inside is only air and the memories of our forefathers. You must supply the books.
I knew the slowest part of this project would be me. Because I didn't want to risk any other work projects coming up between starting the Kickstarter and getting funded, I completed the art before I set up the Kickstarter. I've also already lined up a printer — the excellent Jakprints, who have worked with Kickstarters before. They'll also be fulfilling the orders, which means my schedule won't interfere with backers getting their boxes. That cost of third party handling is already included in the funding amount.
Jakprints will print the slipcases (that's the fancy word for BOX) within 25 days of printing the first prototype, so the turnaround should be just a few months after the project is funded, even allowing for long ship times overseas.
The funding total is for the price of the slipcases (there are price breaks the more you order, hence the round number of 4,000, which helps keep the price of the finished box under $10), the third party handling charge for shipping fulfillment, the packaging materials, and Kickstarter's fee. There's also a small pad in case international shipping gets unexpectedly crazy.
A description of the books (WHICH ARE NOT INCLUDED, SHE SAID AGAIN, IN ALL CAPS), in case you're wondering:
A host of co-dependent teens with a battery of psychological issues comb rural Virginia for a dead Welsh king with dubious magical powers. Trees talk; hitmen put down roots; dead people live; living people die. Cars are described in loving detail. Fuckweasel. A house full of psychics tells everybody the future and drinks a lot on-page considering it’s a young adult series. Nobody kisses anybody, which is weird because everybody loves everybody. There’s rich boys! Poor boys! Sad boys! Angry boys! Raven boys! Collect them all!
