The Food Voice: We Write and Talk About Food

$64,327

347

Attention all Eaters, Food Lovers and Citizens of the Food World

Do you eat food every day? We do. And we talk and write about it, too. Do you care about what you eat? We do. And we want to make it easy and fun for you to stay involved and up-to-date on what’s going on with food in New England in print and digitally, in person and by audio. We want to give you podcasts, events and magazines at no charge.

We are aiming to be New England’s New Hub for All Things Food, a Fresh and Unified Voice for the Progressive Food Movement, the only nonprofit major media platform in the region to be singularly dedicated to covering food in a mindful, deep, provocative and delicious way.

To learn more about The Food Voice, Let's Talk About Food, To Market and Edible Boston, please go to our website, foodvoice.org, and like and follow us on social media. Thanks!

Why $60,000?

As a nonprofit, we want to bring about change in our food system through print magazines, events and podcasts. We also believe that to make the largest impact our events and publications should be free-of-charge to keep them accessible to the broadest possible audience.

Your support will allow us to fulfill our immediate goals:

A Let’s Talk About Food Podcast. $35,000 will enable us to produce a pilot for a podcast series that will entertain and educate our community with an engaging fun format, loads of local voices and their stories, on topics you care about. We hope to debut our series in mid 2018.

EXPAND the scope and reach of our regional publication, To Market. Our goal of $25,000 will help us to double our current reach and expand our editorial coverage.

Who We Are:

A quarterly magazine, telling the stories of local people who make our food; the farmers who struggle to acquire and keep their land, the fishermen who cope with ever-tightening regulations and a dwindling catch, the bakers who source local grains, the food entrepeneurs and their new products, the restaurants who strive to be competitive and still be part of the farm-to-table movement.

We print 50,000 copies of each issue, distributing throughout the greater Boston and Worcester area. Each magazine is read by 200,000 people; our readers tell us they hold on to each issue, creating a library that they can refer back to season by season.

Let's Talk About Food has engaged over 50,000 people in conversations about food-related topics, such as:

  • the future of fishing and farming in New England,
  • the Farm Bill,
  • aquaculture,
  • politics of food,
  • food justice,
  • GMOs,
  • food allergies, and
  • where food and technology intersect.

Gives New England readers the information they need to make better choices about the food they eat. To Market includes high impact topics that are both local and global, spotlighting writers, farmers, entrepreneurs and artisans from all over our region.
  • sustainable fisheries,
  • food labels,
  • restoring water quality with oysters,
  • advocating for better school meals,
  • food waste in schools, and
  • the revival of New England grains.

Risks and challenges

This project poses very few risks to our supporters. For over 10 years, we have produced events and magazines under the names Let’s Talk About Food, Edible Boston and To Market. Now under The Food Voice umbrella, we will continue to produce magazines and events. While we have never published a podcast before, we know local food, the community and the content, and will hire experts to ensure a quality production. Kickstarter funding will allow us to expand our presence throughout New England and to do even more to give food a voice.
