Check out how much fun pretty people had playing Pretty Ugly!
Mirror, mirror on the wall, who is the fairest of them all? In Pretty Ugly, every player thinks they're the prettiest, but there can only be one top model.
Pretty Ugly is a satirical card game about beauty contests and Top Model TV shows. This interactive, fun game contains a good mixture of strategy and luck. The game mimics absurd real-world beauty mania: players can never completely reach the beauty ideal, the beauty ideal changes over time, and finally, beauty sells!
The game was developed during 9 months and was heavily playtested more than 500 times with more than 1000 players. Also, established game designers like Bernd Eisenstein, Peer Sylvester and Hartmut Kommerell playtested Pretty Ugly and their feedback helped to optimize the game and make it very balanced.
For your support we would like to reward you with the following awesome game components, expansions and add-ons.
► 144 cards in total!
► This is more than 4 times the amount of a normal deck of cards!!!
In Pretty Ugly, the players represent models who want to win as many beauty contests as possible. Each turn a player either takes 3 open cards to add to their hand, or plays an action to adapt their looks to the changing, but maybe not so “pretty” beauty ideal ["I need some leg hair!"], uglify other players ["Sorry Sarah, but your face is way too pretty. Take this face instead!"], or bribe the judges.
Unlike other card games, look cards can either be used as a look or an action, but never both at the same time:
But be careful: other players can be mean and “uglify” you too! Every three rounds there is a beauty contest where the player with most matching aspects with the beauty ideal wins the most money. Then players change the beauty ideal and need to adapt to it. Whoever has the most money after 9 rounds and 3 beauty contests wins the game.
Pretty Ugly can be learned in 3 minutes and takes only about 30 minutes to play (offline). The game is highly language independent. We will provide a pdf of the rulebook in several languages: German, English (and probably many more; contact us if you want to translate it into your language).
It is a great party game that starts funny discussions ["Hey Dude, you stole my armpit hair!"]. However, it still provides enough depth for strategic gamers. So, it is a great filler game that meets both the needs of casual and strategic gamers.
For more detailed information on the rules you can have a look at the rulebook.
The Catfight and Action Card Expansion can be played together at the same time. Both expansions require the base game of Pretty Ugly.
200.000 teenagers get cosmetic plastic surgeries in the US alone every year (rising by 30-60% annually!). Beauty mania is a rising global phenomenon even among teenagers and kids. A lot of bullying in school circles around looks. Media promote the idea that "looks are everything". Pretty Ugly teaches:
- We start (our lives) with some look out of our control
- The Beauty Ideal can not be completely reached.
- The Beauty Ideal changes over time. Most kids are not aware of it because ideals change slowly and they can not remember a different beauty ideal than the one they are used to.
Check out the pledge level $140 USD - 'PRETTY UGLY EDUCATION'. It includes 6 games of Pretty Ugly and a Teaching Aid pdf for teachers and educators. It is a perfect gift for your local school. Your pledge supports a noble cause. NEXT GENERATION KARMA FOR YOU!
André Berg, Ethics teacher in a bilingual school in Berlin, used Pretty Ugly 5 times in class with 11-13 year olds:
- "We had a lot of fun"
- "We were all surprised how fast they picked it up and enjoyed playing it"
- "After having played it, the kids think what it is all about."
- "It is good to get into the topic"
Student (12 year old):
- "The game shows people that it is not about how someone looks but about character and the person"
- "It is about how people look at somebody and say he can be my friend or he can not be my friend because of how he is looking and how he dresses"
After playtesting Pretty Ugly in schools we realized that even a simplified version of Pretty Ugly does a great job getting students to discuss beauty mania, plastic surgery etc. Furthermore, it requires less explanation, is easier to understand, plays faster and leaves more time to reflect this important topic in class.
After learning simplified rules first, kids picked up the full rules very quickly. So we provide the simple rules variant in the main game. The action icons are ignored and players can either take 3 cards, put any hand card into their look or uglify another player.
We love you! Your generosity helps us make a stand against beauty mania! So you deserve some generosity in return as well, don't you?! So we give you the following stretch goals (for pledges equal and above $25 USD):
Juma Al-JouJou (Game Designer)
Juma is a true board game geek and Pretty Ugly's game designer. Juma has a very special relationship to games. In his early childhood in an orphanage, Juma fell in love with the game of chess. Chess transformed his life, promoted his intellectual curiosity that is one of the driving forces throughout Juma's career. So Juma believes in the "transformative" power of games!
Now Juma wants to change the world for the better as a social entrepreneur. Probably due to the weirdest possible multidisciplinary academic background in French, Philosophy, Economics, Business Mathematics, and Innovation Management & Entrepreneurship Juma daily comes up with new ideas for games or business models. Juma worked as a consultant before he became a social entrepreneur.
In his youth, Sebastian was a passionate fantasy tabletop & role-playing gamer and now mainly plays strategy board games. After working for more than 10 years in finance, Sebastian joined Juma to shape the world as an entrepreneur.
Sebastian is responsible for operations and finances of Karma Games. He is enthusiastic about the social impact Karma Games promotes and wants to drive societal change.
In addition to physical games, we want to offer these games online to reach many more people. Our big vision is to convince companies to provide donation budgets for our online games. After each game played online, a player can donate 1 euro to a charity project but this euro is paid by the corporate sponsors. So, players can "donate by playing instead of paying."
We already secured several (social) entrepreneurial scholarships (EXIST, SOCIAL IMPACT ENTERPRISE) that include coaching and financial resources so we can work full-time on this project. Thank you so much for helping us get closer to our big vision by a super, awesome and successful kickstarter campaign!
Several people support our team: Dawid Lijewski is our coder and David Robinson is the lead game artist. Lisa Doyle, Laura Bailey, Saba Khalid, Synke Nepolski and Andreas Berneck support us in PR & Marketing. Andy Ajonjoli helps us with video editing and graphic design.
Our youth, energy & passion is complemented with the experience of our high-quality advisory board consisting out of Prof. Dr. Rüdiger Zarnekow (ICT, Technical University Berlin) and SAP Development Manager Stefan Fischer. The coaches Hans-Günter Herrmann (marketing), Alf Arnold (corporate design & PR), Dr. Arndt Schwaiger (game development) help us to make the right decisions in regular meetings.
We are on Kickstarter to raise the funds to produce and publish the physical card game Pretty Ugly. So far, we've invested most of the little money we have for game design, artwork, videos and the online game.
But now we need your help! We still need to complete some of the artwork for our expansion packs as well as the male look cards. After that, we need to cover costs of printing, packaging, shipping, stretch goals and so on. With your support, we can make it happen!
- $5: '1 EXPANSION' of Pretty Ugly can be added to any reward levels that include a physical copy of the game (rewards equal $25 and above) for an extra copy of 1 Expansion. You can also add several extra expansions, just add $5 each. You will need to manually change the $ amount of your pledge (but not the reward level). After the project is over, you can indicate on the post-project survey which (Catfight or Action) and the number of expansions you're receiving.
- $29: 'PRETTY UGLY' Game can be added to reward levels for one extra copy of Pretty Ugly (max 5 copies). You will need to manually change the $ amount of your pledge (but not the reward level). After the project is over, you can indicate the number of games you're receiving on the post-project survey.
ALL rewards equal and above $25 include world-wide shipping for the game! No matter where you are, be it in the US, Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, one price fits all!
Please consider that our game contains more than 4 times as many cards as a standard card deck and that world-wide shipping is included. Additionally you can play the online game for free!
After the Kickstarter, all backers of reward levels that include a physical copy of the game, receive a Pretty Ugly pdf voucher that they can give away. It raises the pleasant anticipation of the person receiving the gift to finally hold Pretty Ugly in their hands.

Ein einfaches Spiel mit Abholung in Berlin kostet US$ 20, was ca. € 14,50 entspricht. Mit Versand kostet das Spiel US$ 25 (ca. € 18,20).
6 Kurzregelkarten (deutsch und englisch)
1 Regelheft (deutsch und englisch)
138 Karten gesamt

Risks and challenges
Fortunately the risks involved in completing and fulfilling this project are minimal since the artwork is complete, the game is well playtested and we already have established a close personal relationship with one of the most reputed game manufacturers in Europe. Since we chose standard sized playing cards and avoided fiddly pieces, there shouldn't be any nasty surprises along the way.
Should any issue arise with the print and production of the cards or packaging, we will revert to working with another reputed manufacturer whose offer we already screened.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
