Welcome to the University of Derujinsky! There's a lot to learn.
I have been engrossed in learning all I can about a brilliant photographer named Gleb Derujinsky, the son of another artist named Gleb Derujinsky, who was a famous sculptor and my grandfather.
You would think being a Derujinsky myself, I would know all there is to know about these fascinating men, but when my dad passed away almost a year ago and his legacy was revealed, it seems as though I enrolled in school. I've learned a lot about my ancestry and discovered so much about my father, who was a man of many talents. His career as one of a select group of fashion photographers shooting for Harper's Bazaar was at its peak before I was even born. Since his passing, I have been able to gather many of his negatives and secure tear sheets of these treasured images.
As I said in my video, I am working on producing archival prints to create an art book and exhibition of my father's best photographs taken during his 18-year history with Harper’s. If we’re successful here, We will be able to present the Images to prestigious Galleries in Los Angeles and New York, which also represent the work of legendary photographers, Herb Ritts, Helmut Newton and Irving Penn.
This is not easy – or affordable. I like to think of it as ambitious. That’s what my dad would say.
Each negative needs to be scanned, then expertly re-touched and
digitized to create archival prints of the highest collector quality. The book will include the 1958 Paris Collections and Gleb’s fashion photography of his groundbreaking trip around the world.
All the negatives need to be handled by professional labs for the best results. I have already developed a working relationship with two of the best print houses in L.A. They are standing by!
Processing tear sheets from the original pages of the magazine to digitized prints requires using an over-sized scanner. The most economical approach to this part of the project is to purchase a professional scanner that I can operate. The better the scanner, the better the scan. From there, images will be retouched by the fabulous Jessica Hastings of HYPERLINK "http://www.myvintagevogue.com/"www.myvintagevogue.com. Jessica has been archiving vintage fashion editorials and ads for many years and is anxious to begin working on this. These images can be used for the website amongst other Promotions.
To give you an idea of where your sponsorship money will go, it costs between $300 -$400 to process every single image from negative film or tear sheet to high quality archival prints. Final images will be worthy of silver gelatin printing. I’ll be working full time to scan the images. We are also looking at creating a simple, but elegant website worthy of my father’s images – estimated cost $3,000.
In my financial projection, I calculated the cost of a working space, materials and salaries for project contributors, (videographer, retoucher, printer, etc.). Every penny is accounted for to bring the book and prints into being within a reasonable budget but without sacrificing quality.
Once the funding goal is achieved I will set up a scholarship fund In the name of Derujinsky for $1000. to start with. I am passionate about education be it arts or otherwise. This scholarship will be devoted to the Arts and Photography.
This is an ALL or NOTHING campaign. The more funding we get, the more I can accomplish! I want to meet and exceed the goal. If we don’t meet our goal, we’re back to square one. No prints, no book, no show. No way!
So jump in, tell your friends, family and anybody you know who appreciates fashion, fine art photography and now, this project. Maybe they’ll match or even one-up your contribution. Your funding will honor Gleb Derujinky’s photographic legacy and preserve these rare and valued gems. Besides, we’ve got some great rewards.

I want to thank the many friends who helped me put this entire presentation together. Especially Carol Green who helped rewrite my text and correct my atrocious spelling and grammar. And to Rita Osei, for her keen eye and writing help. To My patient videographer Dan Passaro who helped me get through the jitters of filming and recording this. I could have never done this without all their help. And lastly but not least my understanding children, who took "one minute I will be right with you" so well!
Below are examples of posters followed by an example of the Briefcase Book. All Listed as rewards. Posters will be the outtakes of these, as I have not scanned these negatives Yet.
