No more :eggplant: and :peach: - join emojidex in making :penis: and :vagina: [and :breasts:] into official emoji.
Über dieses Projekt
Why standardize a :penis: and :vagina: emoji?
Simple: because people want them! For lack of a :penis: emoji the stand-in :eggplant: emoji is one of the most consistently used. In the case of :vagina: there are a few options but none quite accurately portray :vagina: well (:peach: is pretty good, but it could also be a stand-in for :butt:). The fact of the matter is :eggplant: is a very strange proxy for :penis:, :peach: may not mean :vagina:, and using the new :taco: emoji for :vagina: just feels wrong. If we’re going to have a visual language where one icon directly represents one concept then we should return :eggplant: to meaning eggplant, :peach: to meaning peach, and add :penis: and :vagina:.
How can I view/use the emoji now?
You can view and use the :penis:, :vagina:, :breasts:, :butt: and other non-standard emoji we’ve made for emojidex by signing up/signing in, and in your user settings enable “R-18 Adult Content”. While we personally believe the images we made for :penis: and :vagina: are not vulgar enough to warrant this censorship we must err on the side of caution when it comes to censorship laws. Standardization would perhaps validate our assertion that we’ve designed icons safe enough to not be censored; but for now we have designed emojidex in such a way that if users do not opt-in to being able to see these emoji they will not be searchable and text containing the :penis: or :vagina: short codes will not be converted into icons.
Here's a preview of what the intro on this page looks like when using the emojidex for Chrome extensions:
Design - Expression - Legality
We've chosen a style that's not too-explicit and yet not overly cartoony, and have actually looked into international laws and designed based on what we interpret to be most internationally acceptable. For example:
- It is illegal to portray pubic hair in some countries
- Due to religious reasons the glans (tip of the penis) should be shown (no foreskin)
- Due to political reasons, the penis should not exhibit an obvious circumcision line
- The frenulum (tab of skin behind the glans on the bottom of the penis) must not be visible or must have a solid line drawn over it to censor it
- In some countries it is illegal to show the clitoris
- In some countries images of the vagina are considered pornographic if the labia are visible
- Many countries have restrictions on the visibility of the hymen/vaginal opening
- etc...
Some countries completely restrict any illustration of these parts, but there are already countries where certain emoji are illegal and can not be included or displayed, so we don't actually see this as problem.
We will also word our proposal in such a way that handset carriers implementing the emoji may do so in a more non-descript or symbolic fashion - for example simply having a rod with a rounded tip on the end for penis or a curve with a line through it for vagina.
Technical Details
Adding :penis:, :vagina: and :breasts: will consume just 3 code points in the Unicode “Supplementary Multilingual Plane”, which has a huge number of unallocated code points. Furthermore, each of these 3 code points will be extendable in several different ways without having to consume additional code points. For example:
- Racial modifiers: :penis:, :vagina: and :breasts can all have racial modifiers like other emoji, such that a skin color can be chosen for each of them.
- “Zero Width Joiner” combinations, where a special “Zero Width Joiner” character is used to combine two emoji. Without the ZWJ there are simply two emoji in a row, but with it you can combine two characters together. Some possible combinations could include the much requested (and once petitioned) :condom: emoji with :penis: + ZWJ + :balloon:, or the user-requested :breastfeeding: emoji with :breasts: + ZWJ + :baby:.
But :penis: and :vagina: are vulgar!
Firstly, read the “Design” section above as we note how we are trying to portray them as non-vulgar as possible. Secondly, perhaps in your culture they are but in many cultures they are not. Many cultures, including Japanese culture where emoji originate from, celebrate genitalia (there are shrines in every prefecture for genital/reproductive health and happiness). In some cultures graphical depictions of things like bones, alcohol, sticking your tongue out, homosexuality, and even depictions of uncovered women's faces are considered vulgar. These places already ban emoji depicting these things and they can ban :penis: and :vagina: if they’d like to as well; but we see no reason why the rest of us should have to censor ourselves and comply to cultural rules that are not ours and may be antithetical our own.
What about children?
What about them? There are a myriad of children's books specifically about topics like genitalia and bodily functions. It is not uncommon in many countries for small children of both genders to change clothing together at day-care centers or at the pool. Children see their parents naked and they themselves have genitalia. The idea that seeing a small cartoon icon of a penis or vagina will somehow damage a child is absurd and we challenge anyone to find objective psychological scientific proof otherwise.
Rewards
Premium
Each reward comes with several months of complimentary Premium level service for your account on emojidex. Multiple rewards stack to add to the amount of Premium service you'll be awarded.
!!!The rewards pictured below are mock-up images. Actual rewards will be produced in the highest quality we can afford, hopefully meeting or exceeding the quality of the mock-ups.
Wallpapers
We're putting together a wallpaper pack with several different wallpaper variations in different sizes for your desktop, phone or tablet.
Stickers
The following images will be printed on outline cut vinyl with a small "emojidex" logo on their border. Choose from one, or contribute multiples of $7 ($14 for 2, $21 for 3, etc.) to select multiple at no increased shipping cost.
Charms [OMamori]
Authentic Japanese OMamori charms for :penis: and :vagina:, with traditional red or pink cloth bases and colored thread embroidery utilizing golden thread for the flesh area.
Shirts
Shirts are the hardest rewards to create for this campaign as we need to disguise their contents to be wearable. All shirts are printed on high quality cotton blend fabric.
The "auberpine" shirt derives from the fact the eggplant [aubergine] is often used as a stand-in for a penis. The shirt features a stylized eggplant with a penis tip shaped top.
The :vagina: shirt is a delicate balance between censorship and delicate vector curves. Great for a hot night of mischief or long day of passively expressing your sexual angst.
Want an emoji t-shirt without genitalia? Well here it is!
Boxers & Panties
Printed cotton blend boxer briefs and panties complete with "explicit" versions of the emoji we wouldn't put on the shirts.
Goals
$9,500 1 Year Associate Membership to Unicode, :penis: and :vagina: proposals - This includes the $2,500 Associate level membership fee to the Unicode Consortium and a small buffer for any preparation and filing costs - but the vast majority of the funds will go into producing the actual rewards. We’ve gotten estimates on how much production costs will run, but not knowing how much of each reward will sell we’re forced to calculate for the highest-cost scenario. If we have enough left over we’re going to produce one or more of the “Bonus Rewards” listed above and include them in our backers reward bundles.
$11,000 :breasts: proposal - We’ll also put together and submit a :breasts: emoji standardization request.
$12,500 :butt: proposal - We’ll also put together and submit a :butt: emoji standardization request.
$23,500 1 Year Supporting Membership to Unicode - We’ll buy a Supporting membership to the Unicode consortium, which will not only allow us to have much greater access to the Unicode Consortium including the ability to directly interact with core members, it will also earn us half a vote which could just be just enough to push acceptance if the committee is split.
$63,000 1 Year Full Membership to Unicode - This is really the big one in terms of stretch goals. A Full Membership to the Unicode Consortium would give us the same standing as organizations like Apple and Google, complete with the ability to participate in technical committee meetings and to have a full vote at technical committee meetings as well as the ability to vote for board members. While large organizations have certainly benefited the advancement of Unicode, they have also introduced a bias and have inadvertantly muted the voices of enthusiasts, the common user, and even their contributors. We’ll do our best in our year of membership to try and reduce the overreach of large corporate members and give the masses what they want.
$273,000 1 Year Full Membership + 10 Years Supporting Membership to the Unicode Consortium: A 1 Year Full Membership to Unicode will give us a lot of leverage to push :penis:, :vagina:, etc. After that a 10 year followup as Associate Members will allow us to help influence the future of Unicode and emoji, including introducing more new emoji proposals and a variety of technical enhancements and ideas we’ve dreamed up during our development of emojidex.
$504,000 10 Year Full Membership: With a 10 Year Full Membership to the Unicode Consortium we will do our best to get as broad an array of emoji included as efficiently as possible. In developing emojidex we’ve thought up a variety of technical tricks we’d like to propose and refine with the Unicode Consortium to try and allow for an expansive array of emoji without consuming a massive chunk of code space and without requiring every carrier, handset, or app to create and bundle their own version. With 10 years of full membership we feel we can make the emoji world a better and broader place.
How Funds Will be Used
As noted above, a portion will of course be used to purchase a membership at the Unicode Consortium and for actual preparation and submission. Most of the rest will be spent on reward production and fulfilment. As reward production costs go down with volume, we’ll do our best to add extras to each reward level as our backers increase.
Risiken und Herausforderungen
Getting our proposals ready is easy; there's no real risk there. Getting them submitted has a few hurdles, but nothing unmanageable; again, no real risk. The big risk here is being rejected, which would mean there would be no official :penis: and/or :vagina: emoji and the only way to really use them would be with apps and sites that support emojidex or where an emojidex client can send images or some form of hypertext. We do however have an idea of how we could implement them in a way other emoji set developers could implement them inter-operably without having them standardized - but we'd like to avoid this if possible.
The biggest risk in the big risk of being rejected is easily Apple. Even if we get accepted by the Unicode Consortium voting members it's possible Apple could once again, just as in the case of :rifle: and :modern pentathlon:, "put pressure" on Unicode to have them removed. This is why we have our "Full Unicode Membership" stretch goal - if we are able to cast a full vote and participate in meetings we'll be able to vote for inclusion and fight against any after-the-fact "pressure" to remove them after being accepted.
There is also the possibility rewards will end up costing more to produce or ship than previously expected, but we believe we've got enough of a safe buffer for our project goal and reach goal that we can account for a small increase in costs. Just the opposite - if we end up with too much extra we'll absolutely be adding extras to every reward level such as special stickers, stationary or accessories/tchotchke.
