This project is really a combined effort between myself and a good friend, Tim Stone. I had just gotten into playing Fantasy Flight Game's Star Wars X-Wing miniatures and was just using my card table as a playing surface. I really wanted to get a 3' x 3' play mat printed off for my son and I to use for our games. Tim is an amateur astrophotographer, so I approached him about a photo to use. He showed me some of his work, and I was amazed at the variety of beautiful images he has captured over the past few years (as can be seen below).
While he has many great photos to choose from, we found that getting a single mat printed locally was extremely cost prohibitive. We also looked into getting the images printed via various printing websites but really did not like the "banner canvas" material being used by many of these companies. Still, we knew there had to be a way to have these astounding images made up at an affordable cost. We found a local printer who printed up a few test batches to make sure the color quality was brilliant and clear (and the results were great!). But now we wanted to let others get in on experiencing these images themselves in their own games. That's why we've come to Kickstarter and you.
With a small start-up goal of $1000, we will only need 34 people to come on board at the lowest level to make this project happen. As such, we've picked 3 dynamic photos to start with: The Rosette Nebula, The Moon, and The Southern Region of the Andromeda Galaxy.
Each mat will come with a short "Bio-card" providing information on the astrological photo so players can have a greater appreciation of the beautiful image they are playing upon. Since both Tim and I enjoy WizKids' new Star Trek: Attack Wing game, each picture has been taken and processed in a way to allow the image to work beautifully as a backdrop for space battles. You'll never get this kind of care and detail from a nameless drone taking pictures for NASA. The 3' x 3' mats will be shipped in a Priority Mail shipping box, rolled up to help prevent damage to the mats.
Once the project meets Funded status, we will roll out and unlock new images as Stretch Goals:

You asked for it so we will deliver it! DS'tone Art is now proud to offer a LARGE FORMAT game mat for backers. This 4' x 6' mat is perfect for larger battles and many games that require more space than our standard 3' x 3' mats offer. This amazing Veil Nebula mosaic mat will fit perfectly on standard 4' x 6' game tables.
This item is currently available only to backers within the USA due to the USPS length restrictions on packages going to most international countries.
Shipping to some countries outside of the US is possible for an additional amount. Please contact us to determine additional amount needed for shipping and to confirm that we can ship the large print format to your country!
We have added a new level for backers seeking a beautiful back drop for their EPIC scale battles: The Mega-Quest Level!
The Large Format Veil Nebula mat is NOT a "choice of unlocked mats" for those pledging at other levels. For those who would like to add the Large Print mat to their pledge level of Redshirt Level or higher, simply follow these steps:
Manage Your Pledge (button), keep the pledge level the same but add $70 to the amount you are pledging.
Risks and challenges
Obviously, we're not printing these things in our basement so we will be beholden to the local printing company we've selected for the project. I've talked extensively with the account manager there (who has also successfully Kickstarted his own project) so he's keenly aware of our timetable about getting the rewards out to all of those who decide to sponsor this project. We've built in enough time to make sure these mats get out early in 2014 but it would surprise me if we couldn't do it much more expediently than that.
Another challenge due to the large nature of these mats is the cost for international shipping outside of the US. Considering the expense can range from $40 to $80 for shipping when I looked over the USPS postage site, it is relatively impossible to post an exact amount for backers outside of the US. Any international backers can feel free to contact me to determine what the possible shipping cost would be for supporting the project at a certain level and can base their decision upon same. After the project is funded I can collect shipping fees separately for supporters outside of the US.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
