About

Noctis Gaming is a new tabletop game, terrain and accessories developer that is looking for funding to launch its first IP - Drakenheim: Emerging Empires. Set in the dark fantasy world of Mithrandris, players will be developing their own 20mm empires and securing an area of the world they can call home. Set many years after a now forgotten war, civilisations are once again spreading throughout the land, creating new partnerships and new rivalries.

The scope of Drakenheim: Emerging Empires is huge and this is step one of the grand plan. Noctis Gaming plans to release 12 factions within 2-3 years alongside scenery ranges (both whole and ruined) for most, including taverns, merchants and even castles. We have various expansions in the works as well as an RPG. Finally, we will also be developing an app to keep track of your village/civilisation growth within your friend or club groups, as well as a match finder option.

The rules have been created to be scalable, realistic, cinematic, tactical and most of all fun! We have had such a blast playtesting the game that we decided that we wanted to share it with other players. Instead of writing a full history we have created a backdrop and given players the opportunity to make their own stories and we can explore it together. Players will be able to uncover the history through growing their own empire and through future campaigns (we will be launching with no less than 4 campaigns) we will discover the mysteries of the world - for example, in a setting called Drakenheim (loosely translated to - Home of the Dragon) where have all the dragons gone?

With this Kickstarter we are looking at funding the first four factions from Mythrandris; The Corustir (loosely translated as bright elves), The Knight Order, The Bhur and The Drek. The design brief for the models was to make them small and detailed with areas of block colour for ease of painting. We think we have achieved incredible models that will be simple to paint to a good standard but also allow hardcore painters to achieve high levels of detail - this will be much easier if a company created a range of one-coat paints...

You will see that the unit choices include various captains - we have included these so that pledgers don’t have to purchase the Warlord or Mage add-ons to have a fully playable army.

Here is a 3D printed prototype:

This one was painted by a Golden Daemon finalist:

We are also producing free downloadable rules and profiles for the units of the game. The game will be available in metric and imperial. The Beta rules are finished but will be available from the start of September.

The game will launch with 4 FREE full campaigns to play through. These will have a variety of missions (at least 6 per campaign) and can be played with either narrative or competitive objectives!

The final area we are trying to fund is the first ranges of terrain, including both whole and ruined versions of each design (this is so players can do 'before and after' battles in villages, towns and cities they create!).

Before:

 After:

We want to produce some of the miniatures we create in 32mm 'skirmish' scale - but we have had to put this as stretch goal because it comes with a much higher production cost. Please read the relevant section below.

If the project is successful we will be using the funds to create the best possible models we can. We have a manufacturer who has produced models for many of the industry leading games, who will be realising our range in the best quality plastic we can afford. We will be keeping the packaging of the products as cheap, minimalist and simple as we can so that we can ensure the quality of the models is as high as possible (the most important part). More than anything we want the models, terrain and rules to be where the funds go.

This is a real Kickstarter. We haven't got a major production company behind us so we haven't been able to do what other Kickstarters have and show you an almost finished product for you to fund. We can't be more honest than that. We are a new company using crowdfunding to achieve our goal of providing a free game with beautiful models and well thought out products to give our players the tools to tell incredible stories and have wonderfully tactical, cinematic games.

We also want to release some novels within the Drakenheim universe starting with a commissioned novel by none other than Gav Thorpe himself!

About the factions:

Knights, from various hosts, crusade far and wide across the lands of Mythrandris. Sometimes they are settled and create vast cities and townships, protecting the local peasantry for a fee. Self appointed kings, emperors and lords often install themselves in these newly formed communities, swelling the Orders numbers with recruits from the populace. Eventually, part of the Order will form a new crusader host and will move on from the original. Most often this is done with well-wishing and vows of brotherhood and fealty, but on some occasions the parting is fuelled by disagreement and hatred. Sworn enemies are born in these circumstances. Yet other crusader hosts live nomadically, off the land and out of tents. It is unknown how many Knight Orders there are active in Mythrandris. The purpose of the different Orders are as varied as their origins, some are seeking treasures of ages past while others are determined to rid the world of magic wielders and yet others have no reason to exist other than to support the community they now call home.

How they play:  Knight Orders are a solid all-round faction. They do nothing poorly but neither do they excel at anything. Their main strength lays in Empire building, where they are second to none. Magic is mainly wielded for buffing or as crowd control but higher tier wizards have the ability to call on some nice offensive spells too.

Knight Order units you can choose as part of your pledge:

Our aim is for all of our units to be multi-posable and have a variety of gear.

We will not duplicate each body/model more than twice per ten.

The Knight, Corustir and Bhur armies will be multigender (male and female in roughly equal number- but slightly favouring male) dependant on the way the society would operate.

The Corustir are the most common type of societal elves in Mythrandris. Like the Knightly Orders, they often have vast cities and strongholds that owe allegiance to a royal house. Elves as a race, are often very secretive and reclusive, dealing with other races on their own terms and protecting their own interests above everything else. The Corustir are an example of this - however it is not uncommon for a royal house to have allegiances with the other races. It is also equally likely to find two Corustir houses that are outright at war with each other. While less likely to be nomadic, it is not unheard of to meet caravans or outposts of Corustir throughout Mythrandris - even as far north as the Great Glacier. They are formidable warriors, artisans and scholars and where an elven society takes root invariably becomes a hub of commerce and trade in that region.

How they play:  The Corustir are currently the most elite army available in the game. They excel in almost all areas leading them to have a lower model count. They are particularly strong in organised close combat where foes will need to bring superior numbers and flanking manoeuvres to really break them down. The Corustir wield light magic for buffing, confusing and controlling their enemies before hitting them with brutal fire spells.

Corustir units you can choose as part of your pledge:

Our aim is for all of our units to be multi-posable and have a variety of gear.

We will not duplicate each body/model more than twice per ten.

The Knight, Corustir and Bhur armies will be multigender (male and female in roughly equal number- but slightly favouring male) dependant on the way the society would operate.

'Drek' was once the slave name that man gave to the Orc. It was a derogatory term to desensitise populations against the race. The name Drek has now been reclaimed and is worn as a badge of pride by every Orc Warband and society in Mythrandris. Drek are - wrongly - assumed to be big, stupid berserkers with no wit, however increasingly there are more and more instances of whole societies - both nomadic and settled. They are tremendous miners of ore and other precious materials due to their sheer strength and endurance, making them highly sought after clients by many of the bigger trade guilds. No civilised race comes close to them in terms of mass or brute might and they are a tremendous foe to behold. Some warbands have gone totally feral and live to fight amongst themselves and the other races. However, more than once an elven hamlet or a human town has been under siege when a Drek Warband has come and saved the populace. Odrek (enormous half ogres) often follow Drek into battle using their superior size to batter their opponent. Although much more dense than their half-kin, Odrek prove to be obedient and capable warriors for a Drek army.

How they play:  Drek are a tough opposition for lesser armies. A human soldier would have more attacks but Drek have the far greater power. Only the Corustir would struggle against the Drek numerically and even they would have a hard battle in store. Odrek are phenomenal foes which can devastate buildings and walls as easily as ranks of lesser warriors. Drek shamans use many different types of spells but their magic is always brutal to their foe.

Drek units you can choose as part of your pledge:

Our aim is for all of our units to be multi-posable and have a variety of gear.

We will not duplicate each body/model more than twice per ten.

The Knight, Corustir and Bhur armies will be multigender (male and female in roughly equal number- but slightly favouring male) dependant on the way the society would operate.

Bhur are the brutal result of the horrific union between man and beast. Aggressive, unnaturally strong and with an insatiable anger and hunger - Bhur are one of the most feared races in Mythrandris. Lurking in caves, ruins or living in huts made of the flesh and bones of their victims, they can be found throughout the wild in great number. Bhur herds can consist of as few as a dozen warriors and as large as a thousand. When the Bhur go to war it is with rampaging Minotaurs and the swift and flexible Centaurs. Led by Shamans, Bulltaurs or Bhurlords the army cares not for riches and gold but only for food, pleasure and sport. They pillage from those they destroy and create the next generation of the herd in rapturous flesh carnivals. Of all the sentient races in Mythrandris, Bhur are one of the least likely to ally or create pacts with others - but it is not unheard of.

How they play:  Bhur are powerful and fast. They are a highly mobile force that can cause tremendous damage to a slow or unprepared foe. However, against a well armoured or prepared foe, the Bhur direct their massive kin the minotaurs who can bull-charge the sturdiest defence, occupying them long enough for centaurs to flank and assault from behind. The shamans unleash devastating spells in the form of plagues, disease and decay whilst using more natural spells to boost their own warriors.

Bhur units you can choose as part of your pledge:

Our aim is for all of our units to be multi-posable and have a variety of gear.

We will not duplicate each body/model more than twice per ten.

The Knight, Corustir and Bhur armies will be multigender (male and female in roughly equal number- but slightly favouring male) dependant on the way the society would operate.

Here are a couple of balanced examples of what you can get with the higher pledges - it is a good way to visualise how many models you will receive:

Drakenheim is designed to be played right up to enormous scale games so we created the Mega Hero pledge to be the best value!

The scholar pledge comes with an invite to playtest your chosen faction with us here at Noctis Gaming! You will work with the other two pledgers of your faction to discuss potential special rules. It is a full two day event in which we will provide tea and coffee throughout the day. The event is being held at a hotel in Milton Keynes, United Kingdom on the 24-25th August 2019 and you will be required to find your own way to and from the event and provide your own accommodation - which we can happily advise on but accept no responsibility for. There are plenty of amenities nearby for food and drinks etc. The aim is that you will play no less than 6 games with our beta rules across the weekend, this will give you an opportunity to discuss improvements to the game as well as your faction. We will hopefully have prototypes to show you on the day but the games will be played with base-sized tokens. On the Sunday we will have a closing event where, if the project was successful, we hope to have a preview model for one of the next four factions. A full seminar schedule will be given more towards the time but we can confirm the event will go into the evening of the Saturday.

The Legendary Hero Pledge is our most exclusive pledge and gives the opportunity for the pledger to get their own character produced in high quality resin. You will receive 5 mounted versions and 5 on-foot versions of the model. You can suggest rules for your warlord and you will receive an officially pointed scouts report for them. There will obviously be restrictions on what you can create but as a guide you will be able to decide on - the pose, the weapons, minor adjustments or flourishes to armour or wargear, cloak flow, mount pose, the head or helmet. If we consider your request unreasonable we will work with you until it is reasonable or you can have your money back and receive no rewards.

We don't have many stretch goals because this is our first Kickstarter and we want to ensure that we aren't spreading ourselves too thin.

£500,000 - a sourcebook will be commissioned with artwork from Drakenheim for the second Kickstarter!

£1,000,000 - the terrain will be modular and produced in plastic!

£1,250,000 - a special Drakenheim comedy/musical will be performed at a selection of dates to be confirmed in Milton Keynes in 2020. We hope to be able to tie this is with some parties and events, whilst giving the pledges to anyone who attends.

£1,500,000 - a 32mm skirmish version of each unit will be available as Add-ons

The pledges above give you great value ways to get some core models, but with the scale of Drakenheim being 20mm, bigger battles can easily field 200+ models (particularly great for when we get some siege products!). We have put some extra units below at a discount for our Kickstarter - we can't be sure when they will be heading to retail so it's a great idea to add some of these products in now!

£20 - Custom designed shield transfers for your Knight Order army (give us your design and we will make the transfers - due to the scale there may be some give and take as to what works)

£8 - Corustir archery template.

£8 - Knight Order archery template.

£8 - Spell templates - fire, light, lightning, ice, earth, plague or disease spells.

£20/35/60 - race specific dice - 25/50/100 - these have been designed so that they can be painted or stained by players. This will be useful for creating different colours for different units but also keeping them the same design.

£10 - Pack of troops (Knights, Corustir, Drek or Bhur) RRP £12.50-£15.00

£10 - Pack of elites (Templars, Champions, Drek Champions or Bhur Champions) RRP £12.50-£15.00

£10 - Pack of ranged (Knights, Corustir) RRP £12.50-£15.00

£10 - Pack of Odrek/Minotaurs  RRP £12.50-£15.00

£10 - Pack of cavalry ( Knights, Corustir, Drek or Centaurs) RRP £12.50-£15.00

£25 - a set of mages for a single chosen faction  RRP £30 (for Corustir, Knight Order and Drek this is 2 mages + mounted versions. For Bhur this is a Bhur shaman, Minotaur Shaman and a Centaur shaman). These will be in multi-posable plastic or high quality resin depending on popularity.

£25 - a set of legendary commanders for a single chosen faction  RRP £30 (for Corustir, Knight Order and Drek this is 2 commanders + mounted versions. For Bhur this is a Bhurlord, Minotaur lord and a Centaur lord). These will be in multi-posable plastic or high quality resin depending on popularity.

£75 - eight units of your choice

£140 - sixteen units of your choice

£250 - thirty two units of your choice

The 32mm Add-ons are only available when/if stretch goal is reached:

£25 - 32mm Pack of troops (10 Knights, 10 Corustir, 10 Drek or 10 Bhur)

£25 - 32mm Pack of elites (10 Templars, 10 Champions, 10 Drek Champions or 10 Bhur Champions)

£25 - 32mm Pack of ranged (10 Knights or 10 Corustir)

£25 - 32mm Pack of Odrek/Minotaurs (5 Odrek or Minotaurs)

£25 - 32mm Pack of cavalry (5 Knights, 5 Corustir, 5 Drek or 5 Centaurs)

£25 - 32mm Pack of dismounted cavalry (10 Knights, 10 Corustir, 10 Drek)

£30 - 32mm characters £30 a set of all resin characters for a single chosen faction

£150 - One full army at 32mm scale (one of each unit + characters)

We are creating full ranges of terrain. These will come as Elf and Human in this first Kickstarter with ruined versions of each. They will be 3D sculpted.

Price of terrain is to be confirmed - we hope that the success of the Kickstarter will be sufficient to allow us to create modular terrain so that modellers can be as creative as they wish.

All artwork, renders, logos, designs and writings are subject to change and belong to Noctis Gaming Ltd and may not be redistributed, modified or sold without an agreement in place with Noctis Gaming Ltd.

Risks and challenges

The first risk is the budget. We have set the funding quite high to ensure that we have enough to deliver the project in plastic as that is probably the most popular material for wargaming. If demand is high enough, this will include the terrain. Resin casting is too time demanding for the miniatures, although the quality is superb (terrain may be resin). We have spoken to a few top manufacturers and have budgeted accordingly.
The second risk - As you can see, we haven't splashed the cash on lavish artwork and videos but instead we have put all of our savings into producing the concepts and renders of some beautiful models. Risk two is that you will see this Kickstarter and not have faith in it because (unlike some other projects) you are supporting a project which hasn't already been completed. We really hope you have some faith in us.

The third risk is manufacturing delays. Although we have a manufacturer it is an ever changing scenario and not often guaranteed that deadlines will be met. Our commitment to you is that we will always keep you informed and deliver the best quality product as soon as we can so that we can move onto stage 2 of our grand plan!

Risk four is Brexit. Without getting into politics, the UK is in a period of...'uncertainty' and therefore when it comes to postage and packaging we will be charging this once the product is ready to go. We are going to be keeping box art and packaging to a minimum so we hope that we will be able to post internationally with a fair cost. We will only charge you any charges that we would incur. As a rough guide here are the current rough costs for an average size pledge:

UK: £4-6
USA: £12-20.
CANADA: £12-20.
LATIN AMERICA: £50-100
ASIA: £20-30 to China and Hong Kong.
£40 to most other countries.
OCEANIA: £20 to Australia. £45 to New Zealand.
EUROPE: £10-20.
REST OF THE WORLD: £50-100.

To be fair to our backers, we do not intend to take our product to retail until we have fulfilled all pledges.

Refunds are a challenge. We would really urge people to reconsider pledging if they believe they may need a refund. If you are only interested in the 32mm models we advise that you only use the 'I believe in Drakenheim pledge until it looks certain we will achieve the target. We will of course discuss refunds with anyone who does want to cancel their pledge but only if they notify us within 14 days of the Kickstarter ending. We don't have the luxury of being a huge company and we will need certainty in our capital to ensure we can provide an amazing product.
