The Problem - The High Cost of Air Conditioning
Over the last 40 years, air conditioners have become the norm in most American homes and apartments, consuming 13% of the residential electrical power and resulting in a total US cooling bill that has grown to an astounding $29 billion per year. While we are enjoying our summer comfort, roughly 117 million metric tons of carbon dioxide are released into the air each year with no end in sight. Industry efforts to reduce air conditioning energy usage have focused on costly products that are simply not affordable and impractical for most apartments and homes. For any solution to make a major dent in consumers’ energy bills it must be affordable and easy to install in existing homes. And to ensure widespread adoption, it must be as convenient and as comfortable as air conditioning.
The Solution - Convenient, Healthy, Natural Air
Nature provides the solution: cool using nature’s daily temperature swings. It’s natural and it’s free. Studies have shown that it’s possible to reduce our total residential cooling energy by 30% to 100% using nature’s outside air. To harness this resource, we simply need to capture and move the cool outside air into our homes. All that is missing is a way to make it as convenient and as comfortable as air conditioning. Nature’s Cooling Solutions is a small company that has been working on technology that incorporate the use of outside air cooling for the last 5 years. Our solution is a dual system. Natural outside air can provide cooling for most of the spring and fall and for a large part of the summer. Air conditioners don’t go away. They will be needed for cooling on hot and humid days but they will not run as often and will last longer. The key to the energy reduction is the way each system produces cooling. Moving cool air uses much less energy than creating it with air conditioning. The economics are dramatic. Creating cool air with a three-ton central system will cost approximately $0.45 per hour. Moving cool air into a room will cost less than a penny per hour. Every hour that can be shifted to moving cool outside air will use 98% less energy, producing big utility savings. The controls are simple. Both systems monitor indoor air temperature and will automatically provide cooling when the room temperature is above their respective set point. It's easy to maximize the benefit of outside air cooling.
The Product - EcoBreeze 2 Window Fan
EcoBreeze 2 is the healthy, convenient way to take advantage of nature's daily temperature swings. It goes in a window so it’s affordable and easy to install in existing homes and apartments. It’s a room solution so it will cool the rooms that people are in, not the whole house. Even better, the EcoBreeze 2 window fan is the very first residential product that will automate ventilation cooling and work seamlessly with air conditioning. It monitors the indoor air and will use outside air to cool whenever it is needed and available. Air conditioning thermostats monitor the same indoor air and will provide cooling on hot, humid days when outside air is not sufficient or available. An energy saving combination, all summer long.
Clean Filtered Air: Outdoor air can be loaded with pollen or other pollutants. EcoBreeze 2 is the only window fan engineered with an easy to remove filter that will eliminate this unwanted pollen and other pollutants, ensuring that only fresh, clean air comes into your home. All units come standard with a one inch MERV 8 (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) pollen filter. A washable MERV 6 filter or a micro-allergen MERV 11 filter may also be purchased to replace the standard filter.
A Breeze to Install. Simple to operate:
Step 1: Install EcoBreeze 2 in your window (double hung or slider windows). Sorry but for casement windows you will have to remove the window or stick with the daily window opening.
Step 2: Plug it in.
Step 3: Set your desired indoor temperature and the display light level preference. Install the filter and adjust the cycle between filter changes if desired. Set to auto operation. Turn on your air conditioner, set it to a higher temperature and it will take over automatically when the fan is not cooling or can’t keep up with the day’s heat. Enjoy free fresh air cooling!
Low Profile: The compact fan is less than 7” high so it doesn’t block the window view.
Dynamic Humidity Lockout: Avoiding high humidity is key for summer comfort. EcoBreeze 2 has a dynamic humidity lock out that precisely measures humidity to maximize the use of dry outside air and to avoid humid air.
Dim the lights: The controls and display include a dim and off option, perfect for bedroom use.
Directional Louvers: EcoBreeze 2 has horizontal and vertical louvers that can be adjusted to direct the cool breeze to cool where you want it.
Automatic speed control: EcoBreeze 2 automatically uses the lowest speed needed for cooling. The speed increases only when additional cooling is needed and available, another way that it saves energy.
Low Power Consumption: Approximately 45 watts on low speed and 79 watts on high speed.
Filter Notification: EcoBreeze 2 keeps track of the hours it is operating and has an indicator for the filter change. The hours can be adjusted to fit specific air quality so you control the filter change frequency
Air Intake: EcoBreeze 2 is designed to keep the rain out. No puddles and wet carpets from rain.
Insulated Side Panels: The side panels meet the EPA energy star requirements for room air conditioners. This will minimize heat loss so the unit can be left in the window all summer.
Innovative Air Exhaust System: EcoBreeze 2 has an innovative barometric relief exhaust system. It eliminates the continuous energy drain of an exhaust fan that is not needed for effective cooling and it provides a path for exhaust air. Since some homes may need an exhaust fan, we plan to offer a product that will have an independent control and cycle appropriate for exhaust requirements.
Affordable: EcoBreeze 2 installs in a window eliminating the need for professional installation.
No AC? – EcoBreeze 2 can cool with or without air conditioning. Without air conditioning, it will still maximize the cooling effectiveness of the outside air cooling and eliminate the guesswork associated with the task of manually opening and closing windows. This can be a good solution in climate zones that do not have excessive hot and humid days.
Here’s how the dual cooling system will work. The first part is the existing air conditioner. There is no need to change the unit or the way it is used. Simply set the thermostat to cooling and set the desired room temperature. The second part is a new product that automates our grandparent’s ventilation solution. In principle, it’s a simple product. It just moves cool air. All that is needed is a fan and some dampers to seal things up when it’s not cooling. The controls are a little more complex. They need to monitor the outdoor and indoor air and turn on the fan whenever cool outside air is needed and available. The key is a second thermostat to control the use of outside air. Set it to auto cooling with the temperature setting below the air conditioner and let it cool. Increasing the difference between the temperature increases the savings. Humidity creates another challenge. High humidity not only makes us sweaty and uncomfortable it takes a lot of air conditioning energy to remove it. A humidity lockout solves this problem. Since weather is unpredictable, the system must dynamically monitor the conditions and automatically activate the outside cooling air whenever it is available and needed. The final requirement is the air quality component. Ventilation with outside air is recommended for a healthy home. Outdoor air cooling can play a major role in providing this ventilation. So, add in a filter to take care of pollen and you have a convenient, comfortable ventilation cooling system. The air conditioner will cool on the hot, humid days and the ventilation cooling system will cool on the rest of the days with no need to open windows.

George Waites - George Waites has more than 25 years’ experience developing and engineering products for a variety of markets. In 2003, he founded Core Design which is now a central hub for innovative product design and development services which is our lead designer.
Chris Williams - Chris is a key player in the experience and success of Core Design and its ability to create cutting edge products. With Chris’ mechanical design experience and knowledge of materials and processes he’s able to use the industry’s latest design technology to be a main contributor to the development process of many of Core Design’s projects including EcoBreeze 2.
William Raper – William is an engineer with 30 years of experience in the design, development, and integration of electronic and software products and services with a special expertise in embedded systems and electronics obsolescence mitigation. He is one of the founders of RISC Design which focuses on electronic products for the consumer, commercial, industrial, aerospace and military markets. Risks and challenges
Creating a new product is inherently risky, with unseen challenges that inevitably spring up over the course of development. Fortunately, we have prior experience developing and launching a product with our first smart window fan. We understand the complexity of bringing a product to the marketplace. We have had great feedback from our current users. They have helped us understand how the smart fan was being used and provided recommendations for areas of focus in the new EcoBreeze 2. We are confident we will be able to develop the EcoBreeze 2 according to plan.
With that said some challenges might surface that can create delays. We are sourcing key components including the motor and controls and rely on their schedules lead times. A large order will stress our manufacturer and supply chain (we hope to have this problem). This might create delays. We have phased the shipment of orders to allow time for our manufacturing process to get up to speed and all of our suppliers are on board! We are an experienced team using industry standard processes. We are confident we can address any issues as they come up and we have built in redundancies in both our production and our supply chain. We have the solution, we have the process in place and with your help we can get EcoBreeze 2 out in the world!
