Here is the break-down of the costs involved. I have included comments from the designer to show his process and what we get for his services.
For the first issue of the magazine: $16,000
"First, research and choose a format that works with both electronic and on-demand print delivery. Then develop a layout grid that will accommodate the different types of content. Develop a type palette for body copy and standing heads—this sometimes necessitates the creation of custom fonts. Begin building articles as assets are available. Develop format for departments, TOC, back of book, etc. including any marks or illustrations. Develop cover/spine/back cover…this is a done as a function of marketing as well as editorial design. Complete all articles and standing matter, correct from proofers notes as needed. Vet all images for technical and aesthetic aspects. Prep issue for ship for both formats. Follow issue through publication until released."
For the remaining 3 issues of the first year: $8,000
The format for the first issue will be followed using a different designer.
Costs related to compensating contributors and administration: $2,000
For the website: $12,000
"For the site, it's all determined by the wire frame, but in general we will take the assets and build pages to fill out the site. We'll develop a grid and format that compliments the publication. Some functions may require specialized coding, API development or integration with a database. We'll may also create specialized tablet and mobile versions of the site. Revise as directed until launch-ready."
