Hello, and thank you for visiting my page!
A little about me. My name is Horatiu Radoiu, a student at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NYC, and an aspiring comic book creator. I'm trying to take my art out there and show it to whoever wants to take a look, so I'm hoping I can find some of you here on Kickstarter who would be interested in my work, so without further ado, hereeeeeeeeeees, 51 Serif St., a 38 page full color comic in 7"x7" square photo book format:
Welcome to the 51 Serif St. halfway house for rehabilitating criminals!
Ivan Rosdower got a second chance. All he had to do to get off his sentence was to go for treatment and rehabilitation at the 51 Serif St. house. But when he arrives, he realizes there is more to the place than he thought. Patients start acting weird, the staff is secretive and abusive, and our protagonist finds himself doubting the rehabilitation he was led to believe he was receiving.
So why the weird format?
I grew up on comics, and as an artist I always spent more time staring at the art than worrying why Captain America was kicking Red Skull's butt. I always saw comics as a legitimate form of art. From McKean to Templesmith and Menton3, I always believed comics can hand in any gallery.
So there is the first reason, I want to present this as an art book of sorts. Something even a non-comic book reader can sit on their coffee table and show off to friends. And while you're looking at the art, you're also getting a pretty darn creepy story to boot, so what's not to love?!
Ok, but why 7"x7"?
Well, the things the protagonist is experiencing are panic, disarray, and uncertainty. The 51 house is not a nice place, and he knows it. So by squishing what was a portrait model into a square, you can build that tension. You are now trapped in the box with him. So, there you have it!
That's a fairly expensive book, how come?
Well, a small run book at Blurb costs quite a bit. The limit is low because can't do a large volume, so what you pay for is what you get. I hope to raise some money for further books I could take to cons, but it's gonna be a limited run, and based on demand. So you may just have a book that only 20 other people have!
Well, I hope some of this helps answer some of the questions, but feel free to get in contact with me anytime and give feedback and questions, I can be found on twitter at twitter.com/viley
