As an Engineer and Designer I ask a lot of my EDC (every day carry) pen. It has to be comfortable to use, even during long periods of writing as well as be an accomplished sketcher. The pen should also assume an unobtrusive, clean look.
Although I have many pens, I've struggled to find one which fulfils my requirements without sacrifice so I decided to design my own. The result is Scribe...
One year ago I set a challenging brief - to develop the ideal everyday pen at a reasonable cost. To achieve this the pen had to fulfil certain criteria:
1. Be ultra-portable.
2. Be comfortable for both writing and sketching.
3. Assume an unobtrusive yet sharp, professional appearance.
4. Be long lasting and durable.
5. Use a readily available ink re-fill.
6. Require no tools to swap the refill.
From beginning to end I've designed Scribe from my Glasgow based studio with the utmost care and attention to detail to deliver a truly quality product.
Scribe is manufactured to extremely exacting tolerances, much closer to that of a precision Engineered part opposed to a pen. This is a time consuming but necessary process as it gives two distinct benefits:
1. The stunning seamless look: The parts fit together so neatly that it's hard to distinguish between them.
2. No Ink retainer required: With such tight tolerances the ink refill is held by the pen body itself. An elegant solution which eliminates the need for an extra component.
The pens body is carefully crafted from a single piece of T316 Stainless Steel. The end caps which are made from Brass resemble pieces of jewellery In isolation:
Weight : 31.2g
Diameter : 7.9mm
Length : 109mm
Material : Stainless Steel body and Brass end-caps.
Ink Refill: D1 Compatible
GD Design is a small Glasgow based studio headed by myself - Grant Davidson with the help of my partner Laura.
This is our second Kickstarter project. Our first was the Leverage Multi-tool which achieved over 170% funding. We're excited to be back bringing all the experience of our first project to Scribe.

Risks and challenges
As I earn my keep as an Engineer and Designer I'm very accustomed to working on large scale projects similar to Scribe.
I've also already launched and successfully completed a Kickstarter project so have a good idea of what's involved.
As we are at the final stages of this project the vast majority of challenges have already been overcome. I have two fully functioning, approved prototypes from our manufacturer so all thats needed from a production stand point is funding for the batch order.
Although I don't foresee any major problems, we appreciate that there is always the chance of small delays. Rest assured I'll be updating all backers frequently on our progress.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
