We are two graduated art students ready to take on a new kind of project. We are both intrigued by the concept of human nature in relation to place. In order to understand people from various walks of life, we’ve realized we have to experience their environments first-hand and view their cities from their own perspective.
So here’s our idea: we will travel from Orlando to Seattle and back, equipped with cameras, iPhones, sketchbooks, pens and watercolors. For 43 days we will be on the road, staying with family, friends, and friends of friends. From camping in the Grand Canyon to exploring Portland, Oregon to sailing in Lincoln, Nebraska, we’ll be covering a lot of ground and hearing all kinds of stories.
An ongoing blog will provide glimpses of our daily adventures. When we return home, we will put together a documentary that portrays real people and the world in which they live. We will also build our personal bodies of work by drawing and painting as we go. This will all lead up to our ultimate goal: a gallery show in Orlando has been arranged to show the film and our artwork with our own community. In this way, we can share our insights about how the unique place in which we live defines who we are—and hopefully, what unifies all of us regardless of the town we call home.
We’ve been planning and saving for the trip itself for two years, but now we could use some extra support for video and art supplies and to prepare for the gallery show we’ll be putting on this fall. Any amount will help bring this trip to life, and in turn we would love to involve you in the trip by sending you postcards, drawings, and paintings made on the road.
We’re excited for this trip and grateful to know that our artwork, film, and show will be inspired by awesome people like you! Even if you don’t have the means to chip in, we would love for everyone to be a part of our trip by keeping up with our adventure at www.2012wander.tumblr.comMorgan & Hillery
