About this project
What Is Flutter?
Flutter is about Lily, a girl who shapeshifts into a boy to get her dream girl and the chaos that comes from pretending to be someone she's not. That chaos continues in Volume Three: Hey Mom, Why So Tense?
In Volume Three, while shapeshifting, Lily gets stuck in a body, but not just any body - her mother's. Forced to see the world through the eyes of her estranged mother, Lily must accept that she'll never live a "normal life" in order to fulfill her true destiny.
Flutter is a comic series that began over five years ago in a writing class at Grub Street, Boston's independent writing center. Since then, Flutter has been featured on Law & Order: SVU, in The New York Times, and in the Boston Globe. Flutter is one of the best LGBT graphic novels of 2013 and 2015, according to The Advocate. Bleeding Cool lists it as one of the 15 best indie comics of 2014.
Most recently, the Virginia Library Association named Volume Two a 2015 Graphic Novel Diversity Award Honor Book. Volume Two was also named a 2015 INDIEFAB Book of the Year finalist by Foreword Reviews. For me, though, the biggest thrill of all was when comic legend Gail Simone described Flutter, Volume One as "a truly thrilling graphic novel."
I have always envisioned Flutter as a three volume graphic novel series, so this is the final volume of this story arc. I'm a 'never say never' person, so I'm not saying that this is the very end of all things Flutter. There's a chance that it will show up in another format, but this story arc, this graphic novel series published by 215 Ink, is ending with Volume Three.
To celebrate, we're combining all three volumes into THE FLUTTER COLLECTION, a 300+ page full color book, and offering it as a reward in this Kickstarter campaign. Only a limited number of THE FLUTTER COLLECTION will be printed. This campaign is the only place where you can guarantee that a copy is yours.
Who Is Flutter?
Flutter, Volume One started with me writing the script and Jeff McComsey doing everything else: art, colors, and lettering. Jeff and I met through a mutual friend who was teaching the comic / graphic novel writing class that I took at Grub Street.
McComsey and I decided to expand the team for Volume Two, adding Chris Goodwin as colorist and Jeff McClelland as letterer. The way Chris got involved was pretty funny. Chris and I both had day jobs at the same publisher. When he stopped by to tell me he was leaving his job, I told him that McComsey and I needed a colorist for Volume Two. When I mentioned the date we needed the pages by, Chris said, "That's crazy! That's impossible!"
He came back to my desk twenty minutes later and said he wanted to try to meet the crazy, impossible deadline. The result was Volume Two.
All four of us are back for Volume Three. As well as lettering, Jeff McClelland will also be handling the editing duties of both Volume Three and THE FLUTTER COLLECTION.
McClelland has been in the trenches with me at comic conventions and with print deadlines. He is always there with a bottle of Cheerwine and a solution for making any situation, any page of Flutter better.
Why We Need Funds
Flutter is an indie comic on a very small press. We prefer it that way because we get to tell the story we want to tell, how and when we want to tell it. However, that means the burden of the production and printing costs falls on us.
Producing and printing full color 100+ page graphic novels is expensive. Like with our previous Flutter, Volume Two Kickstarter campaign, we need funds to produce and print enough copies of Volume Three to distribute it to comic stores. In addition, for this campaign, we also want to print a limited number of THE FLUTTER COLLECTION, a full color 300+ page book.
Rewards, Stretch Goals, and Add-Ons
Along with all the books, we have lots of other reward options. Jeff McComsey will draw you as an extra in Volume Three - you can even have a speaking role! There's also original and commissioned art by McComsey. The original art available for this campaign has been in multiple art exhibits this year.
There are special Cheerwine reward tiers, tributes to the soft drink from my hometown. The Cheerwine rewards include all the books and comics where the soft drink is mentioned.
We also have limited edition Flutter guitar picks and t-shirts. The Volume Two t-shirts from our last campaign will be available along with new options. You'll get to pick which one you want when we send out surveys.
There are Volume Three scripts with commentary, a writing class with me, and limited edition bookplates from McComsey. And the first 100 backers of this campaign get an extra reward! If you have any questions about the rewards or this campaign, please email me at firstname.lastname@example.org.
We have stretch goals planned, so stay tuned for those. We'll also be offering Add-Ons later in the campaign. For example, if you're torn between a T-shirt and an original art reward, you'll get a chance to add-on items to the reward you've selected at a later date. More details on all this soon. Thank you for your time, consideration, and support!
Risks and challenges
Juggling four different schedules can be tough, but members of this team have worked together now on multiple projects. One of the reasons we love working together is because - no matter what - we get things done!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
