The Flutter Dream
Flutter is a graphic novel series about a girl who shape-shifts into a boy to get the girl. Over the course of the series, she learns that being a guy has its own difficulties and pretending to be someone else has consequences.
This year, again working with 215 Ink, we’re publishing the second volume of Flutter. 215 Ink is a small press fighting the good fight. They've used all of the resources they have available to support Flutter. However, the one thing we've yet to accomplish with 215 Ink is getting enough copies of the full color graphic novels printed so that we can get them into comic shops.
This is where you come in. With your help, we can print enough copies of Flutter, Vol. 1 & 2 to work directly with a distributor and get them into comic shops. All of the money raised by this Kickstarter will go towards printing copies of Flutter, Vol. 1 & 2. Any money over our initial goal will go toward printing more Flutter.
Comics and graphic novels are more popular than ever. The success of mainstream books such as Young Avengers and Ms. Marvel proves that the demand for diverse storytelling is growing. Making Flutter available for anyone who needs or wants to read it is our goal. Not only will you be helping us accomplish this dream, but you’ll be supporting 215 Ink, an indie press that provides a nurturing, supportive publishing home for comic artists and writers.
The Flutter Story So Far
While the root of Flutter comes from my childhood -- growing up in a small, conservative town, thinking my life would be easier as a boy -- this project is a complete 50-50 collaboration with Jeff.
One of my favorite examples of how Jeff and I work together is the evolution of the character Penelope.
Penelope was only supposed to be a minor character, but I fell in love with how Jeff drew her. Even in Jeff's early sketches, he gave Penelope so much personality that she jumped off the page. Over the course of vol. 1, Penelope developed into a major character.
Now she's on the cover of vol. 2.
STRETCH GOAL #1 - UNLOCKED!! $10,000
Hitting our initial goal of $8,000 means that every backer receives a limited edition 28 page FUBAR mini comic featuring all three of my FUBAR stories. Now that we've reached our first stretch goal of $10,000, that mini comic will include a brand new FUBAR story!
STRETCH GOAL #2
Should we, could we, CAN we??? 36 hours to go and ONE MORE STRETCH GOAL! Can we do it? If we hit our second stretch goal, all backers will receive an exclusive, limited edition 5'X7" FLUTTER print, art by Jeff McComsey, signed and numbered.
Rewards, Rewards, Rewards
Along with copies of Flutter, Vol. 1 & 2, we also have copies of other books by us as rewards, including my YA novel, A Boy Like Me, and Jeff's graphic novel, Mother Russia, tons of original art rewards, and limited edition Flutter T-shirts.
Mother Russia is a graphic novel by Jeff based on one of the first two stories that originally launched FUBAR.
I’m offering a one on one version of the graphic novel / comic writing class that I teach at Grub Street, as well as various manuscript consultations, including a novel manuscript consultation by both writer / editor Kelly Ford and me. Read more about Kelly's work here. Below are some testimonials for my classes, seminars, and consulting.
"Not only is Jennie Wood a talented writer, but she is also a gifted teacher. Through her examples and experience, Jennie did a fantastic job in teaching the formatting and technique of comic writing. She also provided informative feedback on my short comic script, "The Most Beautiful Girl He'd Ever Seen," from improving dialogue to expanding the script in order to add to character development."
- Kevin Lewis, writer
"Jennie Wood's classes combine her talent, experience, marketing skills, and professionalism. I'd urge anyone who wants to further their knowledge of the graphic novel art form and create a pathway to success to take her classes. You'll be very happy you did!"
- Richard Salvucci, artist
"Jennie Wood doesn't just know how to write a great graphic novel; she knows how to teach others how to do so. That's an even rarer gift."
- Leslie Lehmann, Board of Directors Friends of the Brighton Branch Library, lifelong comics enthusiast, retired teacher
"There's an old adage that talent is nothing without craft - meaning that no matter how much raw talent you might have, it's practically useless without an understanding of the tools and craft that you must use to *focus* that talent. Not only is Jennie Wood wildly talented in her own right, she's also a master of her craft - and one who can creatively and compassionately teach you how to be better at doing what you love."
- Matt Hurd, writer & founder of Breakwater Industries
We also have some fun rewards if we hit our stretch goals. On behalf of 215 Ink and Jeff, I thank you for your time and support.
