About this project
VOTE FOR MONEY FOR NOTHING AS INDIEWIRE'S PROJECT OF THE WEEK:
We are excited to announce that we are in the running for Indiewire's Project of the Week! Please support us by voting for "Money For Nothing" (it only takes a second!):
Thanks to our backers' incredible generosity and support, we have reached our $100,000 goal! Our Kickstarter campaign isn't over yet, though - we want to keep the momentum going!
We've created a stretch goal to reach 800 backers by the end of our campaign (this Friday, November 16th @ midnight PST). Not only will the extra funds help pay for marketing and finishing costs, but more backers show distributors, festival programmers, and broadcasters that our film already has an audience. And of course, the more people who hear about Money For Nothing and become aware of the Fed's impact on their lives, the better!
ABOUT OUR FILM:
Whether you're buying a gallon of gas in Omaha, a loaf of bread in New York, or a condo in Miami, the Federal Reserve is taking historically unprecedented actions that affect your life. But even though Ben Bernanke is in the headlines daily, the average person knows very little about America's central bank.
Narrated by Liev Schreiber, and made by a team of AFI and Sundance award winners, Money For Nothing: Inside The Federal Reserve is the first documentary to take viewers behind the curtain of the world's most powerful financial institution.
The film traces 100 years of Fed history, details the Fed's central role in the 2008 financial meltdown, and asks whether today's Fed policies are sowing the seeds of an even bigger crisis.
Whether you're a Fed novice or expert, Money For Nothing presents an incisive look at this controversial institution, and a much-needed forum for intelligent debate about its role in determining the economic future of our nation.
Join top Fed officials (many of whom are highly critical of recent Fed policies), world famous economists, investors, and traders as they debate the decisions that led the global economy to the brink of collapse - and why we might be headed there again.
WHO’S IN OUR FILM:
We’ve filmed exclusive interviews with more than a dozen top Fed officials (including former Fed Chairman Paul Volcker, pictured below), brilliant investors and traders, and many of the world’s leading economists and financial historians. (View the full cast here.)
We’re also happy to say that Liev Schreiber has signed on to narrate the film! Not only is Liev an amazing, award-winning actor, but he’s also one of the best narrators working today (and currently the voice of HBO Sports).
We can't think of a better person to be the voice of our film.
WHERE WE ARE WITH THE PROJECT NOW:
After filming 30 interviews in 11 states and 2 countries, we’ve edited our story down to a 106-minute cut.
In short, we have a film that is ready for the world to see, but only after we cover the hard costs required to professionally complete it. So please consider lending a hand (and maybe picking up a DVD or T-shirt in the process).
WHY WE NEED YOUR HELP:
Up until now, the project has been primarily financed by the life savings of our Producer/Director – who has received no upfront salary at all. We’ve asked our crew to work for peanuts, received some early donations, and called in a lot of favors.
But now we need your help to get to the finish line. (Yes, we know it’s ironic to be short on funds while the Fed is creating trillions of dollars out of thin air...)
WHERE YOUR MONEY WILL GO:
All donations received will go directly to hard finishing costs (not coffee and sandwiches!).
Here are some examples of what we need to pay for:
- Archival Footage Licensing (the film has over 600 archival film clips and photos)
- Music Licensing
- Recording our Original Musical Score
- Motion Graphics
- Recording Final Narration with Liev Schreiber
- Final Sound Mix
WHAT DO DONORS GET FOR THEIR PLEDGES?
Aside from the warm, fuzzy feeling you’ll get from helping bring an important film into the world, our incentives include BLU-RAYs or DVDs of the film, exclusive merchandise like T-shirts and tote bags, screening passes, official film credits and some very special packages for our most generous donors. Oh, and domestic shipping is included. (For international orders, please add $8 to your pledge.)
Be the envy of all your friends with one (or all!) of our three limited edition T-shirts (which come in a variety of sizes and colors for both men and women):
- "In Ben We Trust?" (designed exclusively for us by comic artist Zander Cannon) - your choice of green or gray
- "The Fed Bailed Out The Entire Global Financial System And All I Got Was This Lousy T-shirt" - your choice of green or gray
- Money For Nothing logo - your choice of gray, green or black
The back of all of the T-shirts:
* These images are mock-ups of how the T-shirts will look. Colors and final design will look much nicer.
Want more shirts? You can always send us a message with special requests.
WHAT HAPPENS IF WE DON’T REACH OUR GOAL:
If we don’t reach our goal, we don’t get any money. Donors make pledges, but don’t pay until our goal is reached and our funding deadline has passed. So please help us spread the word! Every little bit helps. As soon as we reach our goal, we can finish the film and get your DVDs and merchandise out as quickly as possible.
I’M REALLY EXCITED / ENRAGED BY / FASCINATED WITH THE IDEAS BEHIND YOUR FILM - HOW ELSE CAN I BE INVOLVED?
Please help us spread the word about our Kickstarter campaign AND our film!

IS MY CONTRIBUTION TAX-DEDUCTIBLE?
Not through this website. But if you’d like to make a tax-deductible donation, you can do it through our 501(c)(3) partnership with the International Documentary Association (IDA). To make your support fully tax-deductible, please donate through the IDA's website.
CAN I BECOME A PRODUCER?
Yes! If you are interested in making a major contribution to the film, producer credits are an option. Please contact us at email@example.com for more details.
CAN I DONATE ANONYMOUSLY?
Yes! Certain donation levels are rewarded with actual credits in the film. But we'll only put your name in the film once we've gotten your explicit permission (after the campaign is over) and know exactly how you'd like your name to appear. So you can always simply decline to be credited at that time.
CAN WE EXCEED OUR GOAL?
Yes! The more money we raise, the more quickly we can finish the film and the more quickly our audience can see it!
CAN DONORS INCREASE THEIR PLEDGES ONCE THEY’VE BEEN MADE?
Yes! If you have already donated, when you sign into your account there will be a blue “Manage your Donation” button. Click there and you can enter a new amount and choose a new incentive.
WHEN DO I GET MY REWARDS?
Most of the merchandise, like T-shirts, posters, and totes, will be ready shortly after the campaign. DVDs will ship separately once we release the film.
HOW WILL YOU KNOW WHERE TO SHIP MY STUFF OR WHAT SIZE I WEAR?
Once we’ve reached our funding goal we’ll send you a message through Kickstarter (to whichever email you gave Kickstarter) asking for all your necessary information.
CAN I GIFT A REWARD?
Yes! If you know someone with an interest in investing, economics, history, or someone who’s just plain obsessed with the Federal Reserve, please consider gifting one of our reward packages! We’ll contact you as soon as our funding period ends to get the details.
CAN I FOREGO MY REWARD?
Yes! You can just check the box indicating you'd like to forego the reward when you make your donation, thereby maximizing the value of your support. (You will still have our sincere thanks though!)
HOW CAN I CONTACT YOU?
You can reach us at firstname.lastname@example.org. Please feel free to contact us any time with questions or comments.
Risks and challenges
Making a film is always a long, expensive affair and carries a great deal of risk. Financially, we are already very extended, and we have a number of costs to cover before the film can be professionally finished (including archival footage licensing, music licensing, color correction, and a sound mix). Creatively, we have no guarantee that our film will appeal to a major distributor or network.
However, we are a team of experienced filmmakers, and we fully understand the hard work, dedication, and funding it will take to see this project through to the end. We have received great responses from test audiences and we are extremely committed to getting this film out to as many people as possible, as soon as possible.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
