About this project
2015 marks the 125th anniversary of the birth of Howard Phillips (H.P.) Lovecraft, and The H.P. Lovecraft Film Festival & CthulhuCon®-San Pedro returns for the sixth year at the exquisite art deco Warner Grand Theatre in historic San Pedro on May 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. Join us for three days of movies, music, games, art, authors, vendors, and so much more!
We have expanded in many ways over the past half-decade and we made a few changes this year as well; most notably to the date and name. From now on the HPLFF in Southern California will occur the first weekend of May (NOT Mother's Day weekend as we said during our unfortunate bout of insanity) and will hereafter be called The H.P. Lovecraft Film Festival-San Pedro. But it's still the same wonderful location (technically it is still Los Angeles) and folks bringing you the same awesome experience. We do not have as much time to set up this festival after the last one, so please excuse the mess and mind the gaps as we set this event up. We will present our info as soon as we can to you, but know that it will be just as spectacularly tentacular this year as it has in the past (even better!)
Our theme this year: The Case of Charles Dexter Ward
UPDATE: mock ups of Mazuera's art on glasses and both the regular T-shirt and work shirt right here (courtesy of SighCo Graphics)
UPDATE: Our official poster art from Sebastian Mazuera is here! BEHOLD THE KICKSTARTER EXCLUSIVE POSTER! (size 11" x 17", thick paper)
SPECIAL OFFER: The first 20 donors of $250 or more (including those who have already pledged that much) will get a special swag bag from Peepshow Menagerie (performing live at the festival) featuring
- 1 Peepshow Menagerie poster created exclusively for this show
- 1 issue of Bachelor Pad Magazine
- 1 8x10 signed photo of Peepshow co-producer Scarlett Letter
- 1 pair of tickets to one of our upcoming Peepshow Menagerie shows (good for a year)
- 2 Peepshow Menagerie pins
- 5 'Peepshow Pin-up' cards
Only while supplies last (14 left)!
- IMAGE COMING FOR THE OFFICIAL T-SHIRT SOON!
- Add $25 to your pledge (pay that much over the reward tier you select) if you want an extra T-shirt or do not get one in your reward (applies to either the Miskatonic School of Enology shirt or the official HPLFF-SP 2015 shirt)
- Add $40 to your pledge (pay that much over the reward tier you select) if you want the HPLFF-SP 2015 work shirt.
- If you want multiple shirts, just add that much more to your pledge, e.g., for one Enology shirt and a work shirt, add $65 to whatever your reward tier is.
Add-Ons: The Invocation
If you want to join us and have your name read as part of the Friday night Festival Invocation--a new event that will involve giant tentacles the night after Walpurgis--add $10 to your donation.
For the first time, we are offering special Limited Edition commemorative glasses to celebrate the 125th Anniversary of Lovecraft's birth. Image of the glasses to come soon, but they are by the same artist who does these.
Wine goblet - To add one goblet to your package, add $25 if you will be picking it up at the festival (only), and $30 if you need shipping (we need to pack it very carefully)
Pint glass - To add one American pint glass to your package, add $25 if picking it up at the festival (only) and $30 if you want it shipped (again, due to fragility).
History of the HPLFF-San Pedro®
The HPLFF started 20 years ago in Portland, Oregon by Andrew Migliore. After years of attending and contributing, filmmaker Aaron Vanek lost his mind and spawned an HPLFF in Los Angeles. Now madmen Cody Goodfellow and James Knouse have joined the adventure. This is a licensed franchise of the Portland fest, but each festival has its own distinct brand of madness.
Our last Kickstarter campaign was a huge help for us, but we need you again to grow even bigger!

You are also invited to a special role in the Friday Invocation and Sunday Prayer Breakfast if you wish.
MORE INFO ABOUT REWARDS
Secret Screening - After the main festival Saturday night, we will have an after party that continues into early Sunday, showing unspeakable movies and live entertainment we cannot even talk about! For those who survived the Secret Screening last year, this year will be in a DIFFERENT LOCATION within walking distance of the Warner Grand Theatre (we desecrated the previous location too much).
PDF Art - We will email a PDF of Lovecraftian artwork as a PDF to our donors a few weeks after the festival. This features all or most of the art that we played onscreen as a slideshow in between movies.
LiveStreaming - We have improved our LiveStreaming capabilities and coverage from the first year; last year's stream seemed to work without complaints.
Official HPLFF-SP 2015 poster - We are working with the artist now for this image, and will present it as soon as possible.
Official HPLFF-SP shirts (Tee and workshirts) - We are working with the artist now for the image, and will show it off as soon as we can.
VIP Seating - We will mark off an area of the Warner Grand Theater and the venue of the Secret Screening for our VIPs to make sure you get a good seat.
VIP Parking - We have a very limited number of parking spots close to the theater. While parking is plentiful in the area, you won't have to refill your meter here.
Backstage Tour - During breaks or after the festival, our VIPs will get a guided tour of the marvelous Warner Grand Theatre.
Cthulhu Pickles - A jar of SPICY cuke spears from Wicked Pickles made just for the festival.
Reel Passes - EDIT: Our reel passes will NOT be wooden this year, but we will make them look nice and they are your souvenir with access to the whole festival.
Crowne Plaza Hotel - Guests will have a room reserved in their name by the festival, either one king bed or two double beds. The room will be covered for both Friday and Saturday night (May 1 and 2), but not any incidentals. If you wish to book your own room, we have a discount code available, use group code LFF when booking online before April 15 for a $60 discount per night.
STRETCH GOAL: THE DARKEST OF THE HILLSIDE THICKETS LIVE ALBUM!
If we reach $15,000, we will be able to record a LIVE ALBUM of the rock cosmic gods from Canada, Darkest of the Hillside Thickets! (their song "Shhh…" featured on Rock Band NerdCore expansion, seen below).
In addition to the finest national an international short films, we are proud to screen two features adapting Lovecraft's classic tale The Case of Charles Dexter Ward:
The Haunted Palace (1963) - Starring Vincent Price and Lon Chaney, Jr. directed by Roger Corman. This was named after an Edgar Allan Poe story, but is clearly the first cinematic Lovecraft adaptation. Trailer below:
The Resurrected (aka Shatterbrain) (1991) - Legendary screenwriter and director Dan O' Bannon (Alien, Return of the Living Dead) directed a modern day adaptation of The Case of Charles Dexter Ward, starring Chris Sarandon and John Terry. It was taken from him and released in 1991 after being re-edited. Dan passed away in 2009, but his widow, Diane O'Bannon, will be attending the festival with the one and only director's cut of the movie; the one Dan wanted. This is not a completed picture, some effects and music cues are missing. But it is as close to O'Bannon's vision as you will see.
Here is the trailer:
And Dan's reaction to it (this clip is from his acceptance of the Howie award from the HPLFF):
Just added: Peepshow Menagerie burlesque show (Lovecraft themed)!

Risks and challenges
This will be the sixth year of the San Pedro H.P. Lovecraft Film Festival & CthulhuCon®, and our third Kickstarter campaign (the first two were successful). The festival will occur regardless of our Kickstarter campaign, as things are already locked. However, if not successful we will have to resort to personal funds to pay for the theater rental, insurance, staff, marketing, print rentals, guest travel and accommodations, and the many other expenses we accrue. Furthermore, none of our stretch goals will be attained, which is enough to drive us insane.
After this is over, assuming it is funded, we merely need to continue doing what we have done and are doing.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
