Smartphone and tablet stands already exist which are not portable, too bulky, complicated to setup and have limited viewing angles. We have chosen to design and develop TheMiK smartphone stand in order to address these issues simply and effectively while avoiding the many pitfalls of over-engineered solutions to simple problems.
TheMiK uses a simple reverse curve to provide it with inherent geometric stability while propping devices.
TheMiK is fabricated from just a single piece of material yet it has the ability to adapt to smartphones and tablets of nearly every thickness, even those with bulky cases, with NO moving parts or finicky assembly.
TheMiK uses the natural weight of your smartphone or tablet to keep it secure and stable at multiple angles, locking the reverse curve into place at the side of your device.
We have chosen to focus on the design elements of slimness, simplicity and portability so TheMiK can go everywhere with you and your mobile devices without being obtrusive. TheMiK attractively personalizes your keys, arguably your most important every-day-carry item, and integrates with them a portable, universal smartphone and tablet stand.
The Journey of TheMiK
TheMiK is 100% designed and manufactured in Canada and is composed of American-sourced cast acrylic in 6 different solid colors.
UPDATE: New translucent cast acrylic color options available, Amber, Ice and Smoke!
We have paid special attention to this design and reinforced the shape in multiple areas throughout the prototyping process in order to provide the maximum level of rigidity and strength.
Dozens of test prototypes have been iterated over the past 3 months in order to ensure maximum compatibility with most phones and tablets, even those with bulky cases.
In the process of creating and designing TheMiK with our prototyping and manufacturing partner, Ronin Energetics Inc., it struck us…why not push the limits of strength and durability in our material selection? This called for an evolution in the design of TheMiK so TheMiK MKII was born.
The MiK MkII is composed of G10 Garolite plate, a silica-based fiber composite, as well as 3K Carbon Fiber. TheMiK MKII has been engineered to take high advantage of the qualities of durability and strength in these materials. Due to the high strength-to-weight ratio of G10 and Carbon Fiber, we have integrated a bonus feature in the design, a take-everywhere, emergency bottle opener.
Small bottle openers have a near universal problem of being notoriously difficult to actually open bottles with because they lack the leverage of large handle openers.
We have engineered TheMiK MKII to address this issue. Other keychain bottle openers position the fulcrum near the middle of the bottle cap which minimizes the leverage of an already small lever. We address this problem in TheMiK MKII by simply positioning our fulcrum as far to the back of the bottle cap as possible, thus maximizing leverage and mechanical advantage. This ultimately reduces the applied force needed to open bottles compared to other keychain openers.
TheMik MKII can also serve as a useful backup tool with the built in 5/16” wrench.

TheMiK is a collaborative campaign between two separate Canadian companies, Delta2Alpha Design Inc. and Ronin Energetics Inc. We see Kickstarter existing to help bridge the traditional gap between consumer and startups, between backers and the makers of creative projects. In this spirit, our companies are choosing to fully cooperate & collaborate on this campaign to help make TheMiK a reality.
Delta2Alpha Design Inc. is a Saskatchewan-based Canadian company that designs and distributes “hard use” products with the safety of the end user in mind. We focus on simplicity in design and effectiveness in use. Ronin Energetics Inc. is another Saskatchewan-based startup company which specializes in prototyping, design and small-batch manufacturing.
Ronin Energetics team took the first concept drawings of TheMiK, designed them in CAD, programmed the CAM, prototyped and finally they are producing TheMiK Series 100% in-house, locally in Saskatoon, SK, Canada. Without them none of this would be possible!
This project will be our first campaign and we have chosen Kickstarter as a launch platform because of its vibrant and encouraging startup community, where there are great people backing great projects. This is a community we wish to be a part of and provide value to, with your support, starting with TheMiK.
In order to ensure that TheMiK is ready for full production, over the last 3 months we have iterated dozens of prototypes and finally have completed a small production run test of both TheMiK and TheMiK MKII.
TheMiK’s in cast acrylic will be cut on an American-made H-Series Full Spectrum Laser, using high quality material sourced from a reputable supplier in the United States, no shipping delays from overseas! TheMiK MKII’s will also be cut from G10 Garolite stock sourced from the United States. Backing our project is a vote for supporting North American manufacturing as all of our machining equipment and supplies for this project are sourced exclusively from Canada and the US. TheMiK MkII is cut on our custom designed and assembled OpenBuilds OX CNC router, using 100% open-source hardware and software.
We have adapted a wet-milling system to our Openbuilds OX CNC Router to ensure that G10 sheet can be cut quickly and safely at a high quality of finish.

We anticipate a February 2016 delivery of TheMiK & TheMik MKII. The laser and CNC cutting of TheMiK and the TheMiK MKII is expected to begin shortly after the conclusion of the campaign. Our first defined stretch goal is PINK and PURPLE G10 Garolite, of which we use a different supplier than the black, blue and tan G10. By achieving this goal, we are able to purchase the necessary minimum volumes needed to make these options viable to our backers. We will post continuous updates of the manufacturing process and upcoming shipment schedules as each reward tier is is produced & completed.
Risks and challenges
Every new project has its own set of unique challenges. Our ultimate goal is to minimize the risk exposure of our backers by manufacturing locally in Saskatchewan where we can keep a close eye on every stage of the creation process. Because Ronin Energetics is a full-service laser and CNC fabrication workshop, we are able to collaboratively design, test, prototype and manufacture locally all under one roof. This allows us to have control and input over every aspect of the project from manufacturing to packaging and shipping.
We do not anticipate unforeseen machine malfunctions but as in all manufacturing, there is always that risk. Funding will help us add a second CNC machine to our workshop to increase production capacity and lessen the impact of any breakdown. Also due to the projects conclusion being so near to a major holiday there is potential for shipping delays to occur outside our control in which case we will keep the communication lines clearly open with our backers.
In order to further minimize risk in manufacturing, we have already produced multiple test batches of TheMiK and TheMiK MKII in multiple colors in order to tweak and optimize our CAM for maximum production speed at the highest possible finish quality. As a small custom workshop your funding will ensure that this project comes to reality.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
