We made it to $4,000! Now, we have six hours left and one more stretch goal: $4,802. Click here to find out why.
Update 4: 9/17/2012
Well, reality and technology have conspired to put me behind schedule, but I did manage to get started on the painting for the album cover. Click here to see the full update and the beginnings of the painting.
Update 3: 9/8/2012
We did it! We made it to $3000! This is amazing! For my next stretch goal I would like to get a portable PA system to use at certain shows, so I'm looking at $4000 as my next stretch goal. Click here to see the full update about that along with the video.
Update 2: 8/27/2012
With that last pledge I am now up over $2000! Thank you so much! I'm 1/3 of the way to my stretch goal. This is awesome. And with that, we now have a track listing! The poll closed yesterday so I was able to finalize the track listing for the 2 main albums and the digital bonus album. Click here to see the full update and track listing.
Update 1: 8/23/2012
Holy crap I was funded in 6 hours! Thank you so much! I have set up my first stretch goal to help me upgrade my recording area and set up a sound booth under my basement stairs. For the full update and info click here.
My name is Tom Rockwell. I do comedy-rap under the name Devo Spice. From 1986 until 2008 I wrote and recorded comedy-rap songs with the group I formed which was called Sudden Death. It was still mostly just me doing all the work, but I kept the group name probably a lot longer than I should have.
During that time I released seven independent albums, performed at places like Dragon*Con and Nerdapalooza, and had #1 hit songs on the nationally syndicated Dr. Demento Show. I also had 3 kids but they weren't involved in the music. Although you can hear a bird we were babysitting once squawking in the background of one of my songs.
Best of Compilation
Now I want to put together a best of collection which will be titled Rhythms From The Crypt: The Best of Sudden Death.
This will be a 2-CD set. Volume 1, The 21st Century, will feature songs from Fatal Error (2008), Die Laughing (2005), and Fatal Accident Zone (2002). All the albums released in the 21st century. See how that works?
Volume 2, The 20th Century, will feature songs from Unplugged (1998), Brain Dead (1995), Noise Pollution (1993), and Dead Things Can Rap Too (1992). And it will probably have a song or two from our 1996 10th anniversary tape A Decade of Decay.
The money raised in this Kickstarter campaign will go to production costs for the CD. That includes the CD replication, printing, the 8-page color booklet, shrink wrap, energy drinks, earplugs to drown out the noise from the kids, more energy drinks, and ice cream to appease my wife.
I came up with a list of songs I wanted to include and then some fans started making suggestions. When I realized there was a large discrepancy between what I thought the best songs were and what my fans thought the best songs were I set up a poll. Take my poll here: http://www.devospice.com/poll
(Select "Do not use safe mode" when it asks. Nothing about comedy-rap is safe. The poll runs thru August 26th.)
The songs from Fatal Error and Die Laughing will be untouched. Songs from Fatal Accident Zone will be remastered and touched up here and there to fix some mixing issues. Songs from the older albums wherever possible will be remixed from the original 4-track tapes and remastered to get the best sound possible out of them. Keep in mind that nothing short of a magic spell from Harry Potter himself could make my old songs sound as good as my current work but I'm going to do what I can.
Additionally, I am planning on updating some songs so there will be some unique content on the compilation.
Bonus 3rd Virtual CD
As an exclusive for my Kickstarter backers, and because I have 22 years worth of material to draw from (holy crap I'm old), the compilation will come with a bonus third virtual CD containing even more content. This CD will feature rare and unreleased tracks, alternate versions, songs from a side project, and songs by other artist featuring Sudden Death.
For rewards I have the compilation as a digital download or on CD for those of you who still like to physically hold things you spend money on. Or if you already have all the Sudden Death releases you can go for a lower level and just get a few of the updated songs. I promise I won't call you a cheapskate. To your face. In public. I will also have t-shirts available exclusive to this Kickstarter campaign, and custom designed USB drives with the entire Sudden Death discography on them. That's for people who don't have hardly anything from this body of work, or are just too lazy to rip their CDs themselves. See the column on the right for details. I'll even write a song for you or come to your house and perform a private concert for you. And I can forcibly drag along Shoebox of Worm Quartet to perform as well if you want.
Thank you for looking at my Kickstarter page and considering giving me your hard earned money which you could just as easily spend on bacon. No wait! Forget I said that! Ah crap.
