About this project
Rollers is a multi-level casual game for iOS that plays like a combination of Pac-Man and Super Mario Bros. In it you guide an alien creature who can roll up into a ball through a series of underground caverns using his momentum to destroy the crystals which have started growing there. Avoid the enemies and clear all the crystals before time runs out and you can move on to the next level. Along the way collect hidden coins and rescue other creatures which are trapped in the cave.
The highest form of life on the planet Pyra is an intelligent race of 2-foot-tall furry creature known as Katarthians. Despite evolving into a pre-technological society they have retained their ability to contort their bodies into a ball. For this reason, when mankind finally makes contact 800 years from now, we will refer to them as Rollers.
The Katarthians have a bright future, having recently learned to control electricity their society is growing by leaps and bounds. Communication and transportation have progressed more in the past 50 years than the previous 500, but now something is threatening their entire society. The planet is being attacked from within.
All over the planet, in underground caverns, mysterious crystals have begun to grow. These crystals are reacting with the atmosphere turning it poisonous. If these crystals are not destroyed in time all life on the planet could be wiped out.
The one hope is an elite military squad known as the Fera Starks. The first thing the Starks did was seal off all the caverns so the gas didn't leak out onto the surface. But that will only contain the gas for so long. The crystals must be destroyed.
To destroy the crystals the Starks developed an armored environmental suit. In this suit they can use their natural ability to roll themselves up into a ball and launch themselves at the crystals. Early tests of the suits proved they were highly effective at destroying the crystals. However, the air in the suits only lasts for so long. Soldiers are permitted to enter the caverns one at a time and the seals are secured behind them, so all the crystals in the cavern must be destroyed before the air in the suit runs out.
Additionally the suits are expensive. There is no shortage of volunteers to help destroy the crystals but there are only so many suits to go around. So until additional gold is found to fund the production of more suits the team must get by with what it currently has available.
To make matters worse, strange creatures previously unknown to science have appeared in the caverns. Most have been attacking the Starks but others seemingly need to be rescued from the poisonous environment. And with so many underground caverns affected by the crystals the Fera Starks have an immense challenge ahead of them.
The goal of each level is to destroy the crystals by rolling the game character through them. The player can roll left and right by tilting the device to the left or right, and jump by jerking the device up a bit. The player can jump up high areas by repeatedly jumping back and forth to jump up the walls.
The player has a limited amount of time to clear all the crystals and then make it to the exit. If the player does this successfully game play proceeds to the next level.
The player must also avoid the other creatures in the caverns. Touching them will tear the environmental suit and kill the character. However, each level also contains 5 hidden creatures known as Therons which need to be rescued.
When the player dies a new member of the Fera Starks will jump in to take his place. When the team has been depleted the game is over.
Each level also contains 3 hidden gold coins for the player to collect. Collect enough gold coins and the Starks can afford to commission another environment suit and add another member to their team.
The player is awarded points for each crystal that is destroyed, plus a bonus for time left on the clock at the end of the level. Additional points are awarded for each Theron that is rescued and each coin that is collected. If the player manages to clear the entire level, find all 3 coins, and rescue all 5 Therons the player will be awarded with a medal of honor for that level.
The game will be released for free for iOS (iPhone/iPod Touch). It will come with 2 sets of levels for free: a tutorial set that teaches you how to play the game, and the first set of real levels. Additional levels will be available for purchase from within the game, and new levels will be added regularly.
If the game is successful enough we will create a version for Android as well.
User Generated Levels
A free level editor will be available for anyone to use to create their own levels. Levels created by a user can be uploaded to our servers and sold to other users. (Levels available for sale must pass quality testing.)
The money raised in this Kickstarter campaign will fund the development of the game. I have a skilled team of iOS developers and a talented musical composer just waiting for me to give the word to get started on the game, but I can't do that until I know I can pay them. I am also earmarking some of this money for marketing to help spread the word about the game.
I would love for there to be an Android version of this game as well. I'm starting with the iOS version because that's what I have and that's what the developers I found quoted me for. Porting to Android wasn't part of the initial project spec. However, if the game is at least a moderate success I will hire them to port the game to Android. I won't do another campaign for that. I'll just fund it myself using revenue from the iOS version of the game.
