In 2010 the FuMP (The Funny Music Project, an online service for fans of comedy-music) created the Logan Whitehurst Memorial Award for Excellence in Comedy Music to celebrate the best funny songs of the year and to pay tribute to Logan Whitehurst. Logan was a prolific, amazingly talented, and hilarious comedy musician, who passed away in 2006 at the age of 29. Legendary radio personality Dr. Demento called Logan’s album “Goodbye My 4-Track” the “Sergeant Peppers” of comedy music albums. The Award celebrates funny songs in three categories–Outstanding Original Comedy Song, Outstanding Parody Song, and Outstanding Comedy Music Video – and the winners are presented with a statuette of a robot cat, inspired by one of Logan’s most popular songs, "Robot Cat". Dr. Demento himself is a permanent juror for the Logan Awards, and in the past we've given awards to OKGo, Neil Patrick Harris, Todrick Hall, and Garfunkel and Oates, among others.
For the first two years of the award, Rob Balder, the award’s creator, paid for the production of the statuettes himself. Last year's chair was Luke Ski, and he paid for them last year. The statues cost $400 each to produce, meaning that each year we need to spend $1200 on them to keep the awards going. Since there is a different chair each year it’s not practical to expect the chair to continue paying for the production of the statues, but they have to be paid for somehow. That’s where this Kickstarter comes in.
We’re looking to raise $1200 to pay for this year’s statues. Any money we make above and beyond the $1200 will go toward future years of the award. Every $1200 we raise is another year that we can produce the award show. So help us out, and you can get some cool rewards such as:
- An album of live comedy music performed at my private Kickstarter event last year, LukeSkiCon 2013
- A video presentation of highlights of Live comedy music performances from the first three Logan Awards ceremonies
- A official Logan Awards T-shirt,
- An appearance on the FuMP's weekly chat show 'The Funny Music Podcast'
- A comedy song created for you by one of the artists of the FuMP
- House concerts performed by one or more of the artists of the FuMP.
The following comedy music acts from theFuMP.com have agreed to donate their time & talent to the song and/or house concert reward prizes:
Tony Goldmark (song only)
Eric Coleman (house concert only)
Steve Goodie (house concert only)
Each of our awards can be added on to other levels as well. For example, if you want the house concert and the t-shirt simply pledge $400 for the house concert then add $50 for the t-shirt.
This year’s Logan Awards ceremony is taking place at FuMPFeST on June 21st in Wheeling, IL, and will be hosted by Dr. Demento himself. If you’d like to join us for the live ceremony information can be found at fumpfest.com.
The overall point is, we all love comedy music. Whether you grew up listening to “The Dr. Demento Show” and “Weird Al” albums, or if you've discovered it recently via acts like Flight of the Conchords, the Lonely Island, or the hundreds of sites producing comedy songs and videos online, we love it and want to celebrate it all with the Logan Awards. So if you have the funds and you'd like to get some of our prizes, please make a donation, and please tell your funny music loving friends online about this Kickstarter campaign. Thanks for reading.
Risks and challenges
This will be the fourth year we've done the Logan Awards. This year's chair, "Blasted Bill" Putt of DementiaRadio.org will need to order the robot cats, have the engravings made for the bases of the awards with the winners names once he has them, and have the robot cats affixed to the bases. They will then be ready to be presented to our winners at the ceremony in June. We are already committed to producing the 2014 ceremony, however whether we can continue to produce the award ceremony beyond that will depend largely on the funds raised this year. Thank you in advance for all your support.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
