About this project
WHAT IS DARWIN: THE SERIES?
This is an original webseries directed by Carrie Preston (TRUE BLOOD, THE GOOD WIFE) and created by Christopher Gerson, Karl Kenzler and Lynn Rosen. We are raising money to fund production to complete the first season. Now you could read a long description about the project, the creative team, our hopes and dreams... but we think the best way to learn about DARWIN is to just watch the show! We've finished the first two episodes of the series and they are available for viewing below. Enjoy!
DIRECTOR'S STATEMENT FROM CARRIE PRESTON:
I felt inspired to bring DARWIN to the screen because I fell in love with the very flawed, wonderfully specific and heartbreakingly funny characters. I wanted to take the elevated language in the script and match it with a directing style that was equally heightened. So I created a palate of shots and points of view that allow the audience to find intimacy with the characters and at the same time experience the slightly off-kilter nature of them.
CAST FROM EPISODES 1 & 2:
Karl Kenzler (Leo),Christopher Gerson (Michael), Celia Keenan-Bolger (Charlie), Bill Heck (Jansen), Joel de la Fuente (Qui Na), Kate Fonville (Darwin Fan), Margaret Weedon (Fortune Teller), Trish Szymanski (Bakery Cashier) Greg Ivan Smith (Therapist), Ryan Fonville (Repo Man #1), Ben Kaufmann (Repo Man #2), Michael A. Newcomer (Cute Dad), Liz Elkins (Mommy & Me Teacher), Kim Kaufmann, Maria Tholl and Katie Bland (Mommies), Brian White and Maria Tholl (Picnickers), Tarah Flanagan (Gaye), Gracyn Mix (Babysitter).
WHY SHOULD I DONATE?
We shot the first two episodes of DARWIN as an investment. Everyone donated their time, energy and equipment because of their love for the project. But now we need your help! We hope that after watching the show, you'll feel inspired to pitch in and help us finish telling the story.
The scripts are written. We're currently in pre-production in New York and Los Angeles, coordinating schedules and scouting locations. And it's a big undertaking. The money we raise on Kickstarter will allow us to rent the cameras as well as sound and lighting equipment to ensure that we continue to maintain our high production values. It will also pay for permits and rental fees as we go out on location in and around New York. It will allow us to pay our amazing cast of actors, our Director of Photography, our Production Designer and our hardworking crew. During the long days of shooting, it will help feed our entire company and keep us warm with coffee, tea and other caffeinated drinks. Also Kickstarter and Amazon collect 10% of all donations (a sort of processing fee). So we have to factor that in to our budget as well!
IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT YOUR DONATION!
There are an increasing number of Kickstarter projects presented by successful figures in the entertainment industry. So we feel it's important to state that your money will be used solely for the purpose of bringing season one of DARWIN to completion. CARRIE AND THE CREATORS RECEIVE NO PAYMENT FOR THEIR WORK ON DARWIN. Carrie, in fact, will not partake of the craft services catering but will bring a sack lunch to the set every day. We might give her a Coke. Just to keep her spirits up. But that's it!
INCENTIVES! TREATS! FUN STUFF!
Take a look at our exciting incentives! We offer everything from signed DARWIN swag, to lunch with our director, Carrie Preston, to a walk-on role in our season finale! And because we believe that creating is a collaborative act, we'll make certain that everyone who donates to the DARWIN campaign is mentioned in our final credits. So help us out and remember: YOU'RE A TOMATO!
Risks and challenges
Our challenge right now is to build on our momentum. Having finished two episodes, we want to keep the ball rolling as we move our story out of Leo's office and in and around New York. Many of the people who've devoted their time and energy to DARWIN are working professionals in film, television and on Broadway. The commitment is there but -- as so often happens with grass-roots projects -- schedules are tight. With your help, we'll have the resources to clear schedules and finish telling the story of DARWIN!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
