About

Padawan Rising is a short film set in the Star Wars Universe. It tells the story of Kano, a young, powerful but arrogant and impetuous Jedi in training, sent on a mundane mission to a supposedly abandoned planet as a last ditch attempt to learn a sense of responsibility. Her only companion is the re-configured Pit Droid R-KS1. Chafing against the constraints of an expeditionary mission to a long abandoned planet she's thrilled by the sudden arrival of an invading force and the opportunity to test her powers against a real foe. She's wildly outnumbered and seriously outgunned, but she has enough self-belief to power a Star Destroyer and it seems this alien world holds secrets of its own.

This project has been in development for over 2 years now. Everyone in the team is a professional working in the film industry. Some of the key members of the team have been working together for years now and we've shot all over the world together. We've created a wealth of material so far including pre-production sketches, artwork, concept art, storyboards, animatics and some serious VFX. We shot the Kickstarter video on a Red Epic using Lomo Anamorphic lenses to give it that classic Star Wars feel. I'm fanatical about spoilers so I won't post too much here, but every single person who has seen the concept work has clamoured to be on board. We're all incredibly excited about the project and can't wait to put all this hard work and experience into action. Standby.

Director: Lee Kemp

I've been a Star Wars fan since forever. I remember waiting for the snow to melt so I could find the Cold Assault Stormtrooper I lost while recreating the Battle of Hoth with one stormtrooper and a Snow Speeder. I remember raging at the universe that my American friend Craig had an AT-AT he couldn't be bothered to play with and the fact that another friend had a standard TIE fighter with straight wings which you just couldn't buy in the UK.

I've been making promos and commercials for over 10 years and I've had this idea for a really great Star Wars fan film for a little while now. I made my first film in 2003 while serving in Afghanistan and when I left the Army I went to university to study film. I've been making my living this way ever since. I'm now a producer and director of commercials and promos and executive producer of three feature documentary films. I'm incredibly fortunate that both of my careers have taken me around the world.

Whilst I paid for my last short film myself this one is just too big for me. It's already cost me about £3,000 to get this far but the rest of it is too big for me, the story's too good not to tell and the Star Wars universe is too much fun to not go play in.

I've directed promos all over the world including Oregon, Cape Town, Barcelona and San Francisco and I've made films for Polar, Team Sky, Chivas Regal, Jaguar Land Rover and Fruit of the Loom.

I sit on the board of the Producers Forum, which represents grass roots filmmakers in my region, I'm a trustee of Flatpack Film Festival and I've mentored emerging filmmakers both formally and informally.

Writer: Poz Watson

Poz is a storyliner on Eastenders - one of Britain's biggest soap operas. She's also developing two feature films; one is a tale of smash 'em up stock car racing, and the other a psychological thriller about a woman whose picture-perfect life falls apart when she begins to suspect she is being stalked.

Cinematographer: Karl Poyzer

Karl and I first worked together in 2013 on a sports shoot in Barcelona. Karl now shoots promos, shorts, feature films and music videos for a whole bunch of prestigious clients. He's a calm, creative presence on set and we've got that sort of working relationship that's developed its own shorthand borne out of very long car journeys in foreign countries and texting each other late at night to demand the other watches a particular movie, read a particular book or play a particular game.

VFX Supervisor: Kraig Winterbottom

Kraig started out in the music industry with the semi-successful punk band Lightyear, who were famous for stalking Ice T dressed as a pantomime horse, getting thrown off Steve O's UK tour for being too rock and roll (even for the Jackass crew) and sneaking a PA into Reading Festival dressed as ninjas so they could put on a secret campsite gig and technically headline over Metallica.

He moved from a career on-stage to back-stage as a lighting technician on live rock shows before moving into professional theatre and finally to the film industry. The overlap of filmmaking and theatre led to Kraig being one of the pioneers of conceptual, cinematic trailers for theatrical productions that have now become ubiquitous.

His career in film started out with nothing more than a curious google search on how green screens worked, but after a 45 minute After Effects tutorial he was left completely hooked. 5 years and a lot of sleepless nights later Kraig is now more than competent in editing, VFX, colour grading, sound design, music production, motion design and 3D software. As a self-taught VFX generalist with a voracious thirst for knowledge and an occasionally scary level of focus, Kraig's been invaluable on this project and if we didn't have a VFX team volunteering to work on this he'd probably be doing the whole thing himself.

Music: Kevin Riepl

Here's a story for you… We have an animatic for a massive VFX sequence in the film. We tested this animatic to three different pieces of music; the Rogue One trailer music, the Imperial March and a third, very different piece. I sent all three to Kevin and told him which one I liked and why but I accidentally mis-labeled the links and told Kev that I really liked the wrong one. He replied that although my (mis-labeled) music was great, wouldn't it be amazing to do something bold with this film and that third, very different piece of music would be a great direction to push it in. It's great to know you're accidentally on exactly the same page! As if that's not enough then Kevin has his own wikipedia page showcasing his credits for scoring the award-winning shorts RUIN and HENRI. Kevin also wrote the score for the highly anticipated sci-fi series ATROPA and many other feature length and short films. He's also been writing music for notable video games for 17 years, including Gears of War, Aliens: Colonial Marines, and Rocket League. Kevin also scored my very first short film.

Budget:

We understand that we're asking for a lot of money here, particularly for a short film. Even more so given that people are so willing to help out as everyone wants to work on a Star Wars film, even if its an unofficial one. However, making amazing films does cost a lot. Even with a relatively small catering budget it's still over £1,000 just to feed all of the crew for a 5 day shoot. The vast majority of the crew will not be paid except for expenses but that's still quite a lot of money just on fuel and accommodation. There are other things like... I want to kill quite a lot of First Order Stormtroopers in this film. Whilst the official Anovos suits are spectacular they're really expensive and not particularly flexible so we need an alternative solution. On top of that we've been incredibly lucky with our VFX team but we've captured over 20Gb of data from the first performance capture session, much of which needs to be painstakingly cleaned up so some of this work needs to be outsourced. We're pulling in every favour we have and folks are giving so much for free but even so there are just some things that charm and namedropping Star Wars just won't get you. The budget is needed to help us get all of these things done to the level we want to get to and for what a Star Wars fan film deserves.

Risks and challenges

Scale: This is a sizeable production. The script runs to around a 16 minute film but inevitably things will get cut so I'm expecting it to turn out at around 13-14 minutes. Whilst this is a challenge there are several reasons why we're comfortable with it.

1. We've budgeted for a 5 day shoot and the key to projects like this is time and preparation. Both of which we've allowed for.
2. We've produced commercials with budgets many times the size of this so whilst it's a challenge it's one that we've faced before
3. The key crew allocated so far are hugely experienced
4. It's Star Wars so thankfully people have been falling over themselves to help.
