Hi. My name is Eric Lichter, a singer/songwriter from Seattle, Washington. I've been part of the Pacific Northwest music community for, well, approximately forever (it seems that way, at least). I have been: a longtime member of the indie band Green Pajamas ; a member of the seminal pop/rock Seattle band The Life; and currently founder of a new group called Picture Day, partnered with Jimm McIver and featuring a number of great artists such as Andrea Wittgens and Vincent Gates. I write, record and produce with talented musicians of all stripes and styles. My songs and the music projects I have been involved in have been featured in places like The London Times, Magnet, Entertainment Weekly and The Travel Channel, This is not to toot my own horn (well, maybe a little toot), but merely to assure contributors to this project that I've been around for a while and I get things done.
The What and The Who.
The basic idea: I am trying to raise $8K to record a new solo record. Featuring my own songs and vocals, to be produced by legendary songwriter and producer Ken Stringfellow. In case you're not familiar with Ken, he's been a member of The Posies, The Disciplines and R.E.M. to name just a few of his musical collaborations. Ken and I have worked together before; he produced two of my songs for The Green Pajamas' album The Night Races Into Anna. Just recently, in his Paris studio, Ken performed and produced my song Little Bigger for the Picture Day album, Wild Aim. (If you watch the video that goes with this proposal, you can hear some examples of our collaboration.) These songs came out so well I couldn't imagine a better producer for this body of work; Ken is a brilliant artist, and it's an honor to know that he wants to produce my record.
The Why.My previous solo record, Palm Wine Sunday Blue, was released a few years back; it was an incredible experience writing and recording something so personal. I've been stockpiling a new collection of those very internal songs, and it is absolutely time to get them out there.
What's the music going to be like? Always the toughest thing for me – trying to describe my own musical style. What I can come up with: my songs are different. Not trying to be different in the sense of 'weird' or 'out of the box,' but the music is organic - it follows me around and plants itself in my melodies and lyrics. The songs find me. I might say my music is indie rock/folk influenced; singable, occasionally humorous - with a tinge of Jewish melancholy thrown into the mix.
This record wants to be made in Paris, France. WHY Paris?!? Well, a few reasons. Yes, Paris IS a beautiful city and of course I'd be thrilled to go there; however, the decision to make this record in Europe came down to a financial one. Ken has lived in Paris for many years, and has a great recording facility there. When we crunched the numbers it was more cost effective to record this album on his side of the pond.
The When And The How.If funded, I plan to record this album in late Spring of 2012. Ken and I will play all the instrumentation and I will do the vocals (possibly backed up by an occasional surprise guest). The album will feature 11 original songs. Between the two of us, we play an orchestra's worth of instruments; we intend to be both budget minded and flexibly creative, by not having to hire highly paid studio musicians. Additionally your money will go towards: studio fees, production, CD duplication, distribution costs, CD mastering, publicist costs, promotion & marketing. The Final Pitch.
As you know, there’s a risk with Kickstarter: I only have 51 days to raise the money. At the end of that time, if I don't reach my goal, I won't get a single cent, and I’ll have to delay recording. My record will only be made if a community of people supports me and decides to help.
(I don't want to get too philosophical on you here, but there are so many reasons to support local music and independent artists. Artists not only enrich communities with the beauty of their work, they also help educate children and keep local economies thriving. Music has the power to truly inspire, to bring about new awareness, to change minds, to soften the spirit, and to shift the hearts of the world through words, sound, and beauty.)
I sincerely hope you'll consider being part of this project. Your contribution will be very much appreciated and accepted with heartfelt gratitude. Simply, what I am looking for is a way to record a very fine album...I aim not to disappoint.
Thank you so much for taking the time to look at my project -
